At least 12 months growth for one year’s schooling

Dear Parents and Carers,

Well done to all of the students who received their Legends Badges this semester and enjoyed the Pizza Party with the Principal on Wednesday. It was great to see such a large number of students involved and a few who informed me that it was their first time receiving a badge. I look forward to future opportunities to celebrate student success over the remainder of the year. Students across the school also partook in end of term rewards activities yesterday and shared in a range of activities – well done.

Sadly, we are today saying farewell to a few staff as well as a couple of internal changes. Mrs Stacey Gear has secured herself a Scientific Assistant position at Runcorn SHS. Michelle Glover and Melanie Gough, previously employed by the school P&C (School Tuckshop) also depart and following a selection and recruitment process will be replaced by Erika Koskellar. Ms Sharyn Roesler is moving offices over to the student admin foyer and is being backfilled by Mrs Eliza Korfias. Our Head of Curriculum (HOC) Michelle Hanrahan is on extended leave until 2020 and will be replaced by Belinda Duncan. Ms Kylee Leota has extended her leave and is being backfilled by Mrs Kelly Roberts and Mrs Vanessa Miell is returning to a teaching role within our school. On behalf of the school I would like to sincerely thank those departing for your service and contribution to Waterford State School and we wish you all the very best for your future endeavours. I would personally like to thank Mrs Miell for her leadership over the past semester and her contributions to the strategic direction of our school.

As publicised in the media recently, I can confirm that the Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) is proposing a 24 hr strike on Thursday July 18. Further information pertaining to the arrangements for this day will be publicised on the first day back of school, should the strike action go ahead. As a precautionary measure, Principals have been advised to communicate to parents and families early that should the strike proceed school will not run as a normal school day. Formal letters advising of the strike action will be sent out to families. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with this information.

Lastly, I wish everyone a safe and happy Winter break and look forward to another successful semester after the break.

On Saturday 27th July, 2019 the Yugambeh North Early Years Neighbourhood Network will be holding the inaugural Early Years Community Fair at Waterford West State School. The neighbourhood network includes three local schools and eighteen Early Childhood Education and Care Services. This event is designed to support parents/carers as the first educators of their children and maximise education engagement in the early years. Waterford State School will be represented by our early years teachers and myself. We invite you to come along and join us in a fun-filled morning of play and learning.I would like to remind our parents/carers in readiness for next term. Please be mindful of allocated waiting areas before and after school. It is our focus to ensure every moment matters in our teaching day. Parents entering classrooms or waiting in view of their child can be disruptive and unsettling for the class. We thank you in anticipation of your support of this! We know you also, want to make every moment matter for your child. Our Prep students will be commencing their more formal reading lessons in Term 3. This formal reading time begins at 8.45am each day. It is super important that Prep students arrive on time to commence their learning. This is a very exciting time as our Prep students begin to consolidate their letter/sound and sight word knowledge to make sense of texts and become writers. Follow up at home is an essential part of the reading journey. Please watch this video for some more ideas. As we move into the school holidays, I wish all our families a safe and enjoyable time. Have fun, relax, make time for each other and make happy memories together.

Welcome to Week 10, the last newsletter for the Term. I would like to thank all the students, parents and teachers for a very busy but productive term. Enjoy your holidays and stay safe if you’re travelling on the roads. See you all back on Monday 15 July for the start of Term 3.

USING COMMUNICATION TEMPTATIONS TO MOTIVATE COMMUNICATION Many children with ASD do not feel the need or motivated to communicate as everyone in their environment thinks for them, gives them what they want or even anticipates their needs. When you create a communication programme it is VITAL you create as many opportunities as possible for the child to communicate. Start with activities that are particularly desirable or intriguing for your child are more likely to ‘tempt’ them or provide them with sufficient motivation to communicate with another person. Encourage verbal children to use their words or extend their word i.e. “Drink” to “I want drink” and non-verbal children to use visuals/signs/gesture to communicate. The key to promote communication is to immerse the child in a communication enriched environment. The easiest way to do this is to look around the environment at home and school, and think of all the times in the day when you could model, promote, encourage or support communication. Creating as many visuals, schedules, activities and routines as possible are a great way to promote communication.

12 Ideas to Provide Opportunities to Communicate

1. Give the child a container with a lid on too tight so the child needs to ask for “HELP” *.2. When turning a tap on/off, say “ON/OFF”. Wait for them to say to say “ON/OFF”.3. Count wherever possible, e.g. toys when packing away, pieces of food, etc.4. Sing songs when doing activities (“Everybody finish”, etc).5. Give an activity with a part missing so they need to ask for “HELP”.6. Remove a plug from the power for a computer or DVD player, then they need to ask for “HELP”.7. Eat food they like in front of the child and don’t give any to them any until they request a taste.8. Wherever possible don’t anticipate their communication. Wait for them to communicate first, rather than pre-guessing their needs (e.g. hands dirty, want to wash, wait for them to look at you, and indicate want of help, etc.)9. Put favourite toy into a container. Have the child request “OPEN”.10. Have the child on your knee, drop them back and have them request “UP”.11. Give the child tickles, bubbles, etc and have them request “MORE”.12. Sing the child’s favourite song and have them request “AGAIN”.*Remember if the child is non-verbal they will need a visual to ask for help. You need to make sure their communication method is always available. Make sure you make spare visuals, so if it gets lost you always have a back up available. Rewards are an important element of communication for children with ASD. So always remember to make activities fun, fast and rewarding.

Missing school can affect the progress of your child and we appreciate your continued support making sure your child is at school. This year at WSS we have set an attendance target of 95%. Any student with attendance below 85% will be monitored. If you are worried about your child’s attendance record and would like some assistance, please come and talk to us.

This week we will again draw another 7 lucky 95% attendees who will win a $50.00 voucher of their choice. Did you make it into the draw?

There are many ways to enjoy reading a book at Reading Club…

How will you read a book when you come to Reading Club?

Reading Club

…with a friend …with a teacher …with a parent …on your own

STEM ClubSTEM involves active learning, in which the children are presented with a problem or scenario and investigate ways that they could solve problems and create. The students have been working on various projects of choice and following an inquiry based technique of learning to create, try, reflect and modify.

3A has been busy enjoying and writing narratives this term. We wrote our stories about a friendship with an animal and had fun exploring Green Screen to create accompanying images. We have learnt about what good writers do to make their stories exciting, such as using noun groups and personification.

Over this term, 2P have been investigating how toys move. We have identified push and pull movements and explored how they work for specific toys. Recently, we have planned and created our own moving toy designs. Each student has written a procedure for their toy design, explaining step by step how to recreate it. Students enjoyed the creating element very much!

1T NewsIn 1T we attended NAIDOC day celebrations on Friday. We learnt so much about the traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The dancing was amazing with the didgeridoo playing and we learnt about the importance of fire to the revegetation of our land.

6G has had a strong focus on Geometry and Geometric Reasoning this semester. We have been learning about angles, transformation of shapes,

vanishing points, tessellations, plotting and locating ordered pairs in all four quadrants of Cartesian Planes after working with positive and negative numbers. We even created our own Human Battleships game. We really enjoyed this and we are proud of all the work we have done.

Super Heroes at Waterford!

What makes a superhero?

Superheroes are known for putting others before themselves and often without the recognition they deserve. They are ordinary individuals who persevere despite often overwhelming obstacles; they triumph over fear and they are committed, caring and loyal. They protect the weak and stand up for the voiceless; they are honest, and they can be found at Waterford State School.

In my role I am fortunate to be able to work across year levels, engaging with students across a variety of spaces and platforms. The common thread that weaves itself through my day at Waterford is the infinite resilience of our students, their sense of responsibility, their kindness to others and their internal drive to do and be better. I would like to share with you the following heart-warming stories from the past few weeks. They are stories about everyday actions that have a positive impact on others.

These are my Waterford Superheroes……

A student was playing on their own, having a fabulous time bouncing and catching a hand ball. Another boy was sitting on his own watching the boy play. The first boy bounced the ball to the second boy and taught him his game. The next day the boys were playing handball together, laughing and talking and having fun. A friendship formed through one kind act of sharing.

At the recent NAIDOC celebrations, a young student was sad because they lost their beaded bracelet they had made. Another student happily gave one of her own bracelets to the student saying she had made two. Generous actions gifting happiness that will long outlast the bracelet.

A young student lost his toy car at lunch time. It was his favourite and he presumed it had been intentionally taken. A student found the car and handed it in at the office. A simple act of honesty challenging negative presumptions.

One student in a state of distress was aided by his friends who encouraged him to go with them to seek help. Loyal friends making a difference.

Another student faced their fears and challenged themselves to participate in a recent school event, increasing their own capability and capacity to challenge their fear.

Students at Waterford channelling their own inner Superhero. Well done Waterford SS.

Take care,

Mary, Guidance Officer

NAIDOCLast Friday, our school community celebrated NAIDOC day. The day began with Uncle Brian Williams facilitating a Welcome to Country followed by a traditional smoking ceremony and dancing from the Yugarra Dance Group. Throughout the day students had the opportunity to listen to Leeton Lee talk about fire and demonstrate how he could start fire using sticks - students counted to 20 and Leeton would have the fire started. Leeton is also a fire fighter, so he acknowledged how important fire is to the land for revegetation. The Indigenous Reference Group also organised a variety of activities including dancing, snake decorating and traditional games to name a few. We even got to sample a taste of kangaroo sausage and meatballs! We would like to thank Uncle Brian Williams, Yuggara Dance Group, Leeton Lee from Leets Dreaming, Deadly Choices, Jenny Beaton for our murals and Anne Wikeley from Marsden High for her support.

At NAIDOC week, it was the best time because we got to see a man throwing boomerangs. We even got to make lots of things and we played a game called Egar. It was the best time.

Thank you.

What I liked about NAIDOC Day…

There were a lot of AMAZING traditions about Aboriginal culture. I also liked that it had a lot of Aboriginal activities but the most exciting was boomerang throwing. It was my favourite day of this term.

Cooper 3C

‘The Smoking Ceremony’

The smoking ceremony was fun to watch and so was the dancing but I think I liked the smoking ceremony better because it’s an Aboriginal tradition and I respect it.

Teia 4W

On NAIDOC day I had fun with yarning sticks, making turtles and bracelets. The making fire with sticks was so much fun.

Koa 1B

Overall, we think it was good to show kid’s how to do all the NAIDOC activities and helping the little ones. Also we think the activities that we did were great and everybody who helped us were good role models. Everyone got to do every activity and everyone hopefully loved it. The ladies who did it were great!
