You are probably tired o people asking, What do you want to be when you grow
up? Some students know exactly what they want to do, but most havent got a
clue. The idea o choosing a career is intimidating, and it eels like its ar in the
uture. Theres little time in the commotion o classes, activities, sports, work, and un to
think about what career you want to pursue ater graduation rom high school or college.
It pays, though, to take the time to think about your uture career. The truth is that
youll save a lot o time and money i you have a direction in lie, as opposed to just
nishing high school and worrying about it later. Its really a matter o dollars and
sense. I you choose a career direction now, you can select classes and activities that will
make you highly marketableand highly paidwhen you look or work. And it only
makes sense to have an idea o what you want to do rather than just wandering aimlessly
through school.
Nobody wants that. Not your parents. Not your teachers. Not your riends. They want
you tobesomebody. They want you to use your talents, ollow your interests, and pursue
your ambitions to become great at what you love to
do in lie. Thats what you should want, too.
So the time is right to take charge o your lie and
think about the uture. You need a plan o action
or how to get rom where you are today to where
you want to be in a ew years: starting out on a
personally and proessionally rewarding career.
Thats what AchieveTexas in Actionis all about. The
magazine you are holding is one o 16 guides to dierent
career clusters. It is designed to help you make smarter
decisions about your education and career options.
Youve heard the phrase, Inormation is power. Well, this magazine is power. It puts
you squarely in charge o your uture, rom creating your Texas Achievement Plan (TAP)
(see page 5) to choosing college or some other orm o education or training ater high
school. Work with your parents, teachers, and counselors to make decisions, but remind
everyone that it isyouruture at stake and thatyouare taking charge o it.
Get inormation. Get a plan. Get a clue about your career direction. Its all right i that
direction changes; choosing a direction now is better than having no direction at all. Just
promise yoursel that youll make smart choices about where to ocus your time, energy,
and passion.
Were proud that you are taking steps to plan your career direction, and we pledge that
your school, teachers, and counselors will do all they can to help you make wise choices
on your plans or success. We wish you the best o luck on your journey.

When I was in high school, says Sheryl
Kovach, Human Resources director oEnvironmental Services at Philips Services
Corporation in Houston, the only job that I evenknew about was receptionist work. I didnt aspire
to be a manager or entrepreneur because I reallydidnt know about those disciplines. I was justlooking orward to graduating. That was it. I reallydidnt know what it was I wanted to do.
Sound amiliar? You, too, may not have a clueabout what to do with your lie.
Dont worry, though. Help is right here in your
hands. This issue oAchieveTexas in Actionisyour guide to education and career choices that
can shape your uture. Its one o 16 career clusterguides published by AchieveTexas, Texass collegeand career initiative (www.AchieveTexas.org). Thisedition is all about Law, Public Saety, Corrections& Security.
Lets start with some basic steps you should take
to get organized, plan or the uture, and start onthe road to success.
Ae Yor Talet ad Alte
First, you need to gure out some things aboutyoursel. This step can be as simple as writing downa list o your interests (like video games or rockclimbing), your hopes and dreams (like helping
others), your talents (like writing or math ability),and your weaknesses (i youre squeamish at thesight o blood, or example, you might not want tobe a doctor).
Follow up on this inormal exercise by takingsome ormal assessments to determine yourinterests and abilities. Common assessments
include the Kuder (www.kuder.com), Bridges (www.bridges.org), Career Cruising (www.careercruising.com), and Myers-Briggs (www.myersbriggs.com)tests. These tools give most o our students some
career exploration awareness by the time they hit
eighth or ninth grade.Ask your principal or counselor about the career
assessments available at your school.
Reearc Yor Career Opto
Once youve learned about yoursel, learn moreabout your career options. There are thousands ooccupations out there o which you may never haveheard. Fortunately, there are plenty o resources(see inside back cover) or you, and they are as closeas the nearest computer.

www.ioscar.org/tx. Another good place to start isO-NET (www.onetcenter.org).
Gather inormation about what you can earn in thecareers in which you are interested. Find out whetherthe careers you are considering have a promisingutureare they adding or losing jobs? Check out theeducation youll need to enter those careers.
The chart on pages 1011 presents data on 25possible proessions. Remember, though, that these
are just a sampling o careers available in the cluster.Go to OSCAR, O-NET, or another resource to
investigate other careers.
Create Yor TAP
Once you have a better idea o your interests andabilities, you are ready to plan or high school andbeyond. The Texas Achievement Plan, or TAP, is your
plan or preparing or the career o your choice.First student choose a cluster, not a particular
occupational goal. In the eighth grade a studentmight choose Law and then later become interestedin a narrower eld such as orensic crime or nationalsecurity.
The program o study you chooseand yourplandoes not stop with graduation rom high
school. A student could then pursue a two-year degreeas an x-ray technician or a our-year degree as aradiologist.
You should set up a TAP that takes you throughcareer preparation after high school, revising yourblueprint as needed as you go along. If your careerplans include college study, ask your counselorabout tests required for admission to college, such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.

Many Texas schools oer innovative programs toprepare students or specic career areas. Theseinclude career and technical education (CTE)programs, academies, and magnet schools. Once
youve decided on a career direction, ask yourcounselor about special programs in your area that
may provide related experiences in your chosen career.Samuel Odamah enrolled in the architecture
program at the University o Texas at Arlington, having ound his career calling at Dallass SkylineCareer Development Center, a high school with careerprograms in a number o dierent elds.
Skyline is one o the ew schools in the country
that oer programs in architecture, Odamah says.In some careers, Skyline students could even getproessional certications or licenses right in highschool. It was a great place because you could nd outwhether you really wanted to enter a career.
Odamah says that the career cluster system atSkyline taught him the value o planning or his careerand his lie. We learned about planning ahead, he
says. Those who plan things ahead o time dont haveto catch up. Its just a matter o what a person wantsout o lie. Planning gives you a better platormor success.

Acareer cluster is a group ooccupations and broad industriesthat share certain eatures. The Law,
Public Saety, Corrections & Securitycluster, or example, includes police
ocers and lawyers. Texas has adopted16 career clusters (see back cover), thesame ones designated and developed bythe U.S. Department o Education.
As the graphic below shows, withineach cluster are programs o study, whichare more specic groupings o similar
occupations. Think o a program o studyas being like a college major. In Law,Public Saety, Corrections & Security, youmight choose to ocus on Emergency andFire Management Services in high schooland college.

ATAP is a Texas Achievement Plan, and its a smartidea to create one to guide your studies throughhigh school and into college or other postsecondary
education or training. Your TAP represents your chanceto take control o your education and career choices.
Working with your parents/guardians and guidancecounselor, you can pick the cluster on which youwant to ocus your studies as well as your career and
postsecondary education goals. Dont worry. You arentlocked into your choices. You should revisit your TAPat least once a year to update it. You can change clusters, programs o study, and career and postsecondary goals as
your interests and ambitions change. Having a planeven
i it changesis smarter than having no idea o what youwant to do and why you are attending school. Heres howto ll out your TAP.

Theres one thing you needto know about the Law,Public Saety, Corrections &
Security cluster right awayitsnot like it is on TV. Sure, there aremysterious murders, dangerous
rescues, and courtroom dramasome o the time.
On shows like CSI, thepolice go rom one major crimescene to another, says E. C.Sherman, executive director othe Texas Police Association,
a law enorcement trainingorganization. There will beinstances like those on TVhigh-speed chases and violent

o constant danger is whats in

people, says Joe Coee, executive director othe National Partnership or Careers in Law,Public Saety, Corrections & Security, whichis leading the development o the cluster
nationally. Everyone is using more andmore technology. Even or 911 dispatchers;their jobs are much more complex than justanswering the phone and notiying the re orpolice departments.
Rather than consisting o a ew coreoccupations such as patrol ocer orreghter, the cluster is becoming home to more specialized jobs.
Forensics, or example, has expanded tremendously thanks toDNA technology, says Sherman. Most agencies have specialunits like crime labs and cyber crime experts. There is a lot morespecialization in law enorcement than there was 20 years ago.
More Edcato Reqred
New security technologies and techniques mean that those working
in Law, Public Saety, Corrections & Security need more educationthan ever. I you want to be an attorney, you have to go to law
school, o course, says Coee. But or
law enorcement, re, and emergencypersonnel, dierent jurisdictions
have dierent requirements. Somedepartments require our years ocollege, others two years, and some
just high school. I you arelooking at this cluster, you
shouldnt just look at entry-level requirements, but theeducation needed to getwhere you want to go inthe proession.
Almost every job in Law, Public Saety, Corrections & Security
requires you to pass an exam. Acing these tests can earn you
certications in dierent specialties or can mean a promotion. Some examinations, such as those or reghters, involve physicaltasks, so being in good physical condition is essential.
Women and members o minority groups are in big demand inthe cluster. In a state as diverse as Texas, agencies want the makeupo their communities to be refected in their workorces. Forexample, more and more women have come into reghting in the
last 10 years, says Jake Soteriou, division director or standardsand certication or the Texas Association o Fireghters. Theimage is no longer that o the big brute reman. We have oundthat just about anybody can do this job i he or she is willing towork and learn.
Experts agree that the most important skills or people in the
cluster to have are strong interpersonal and communicationabilities. A person in this area really needs people skills, whetherhe or she is an attorney, in law enorcement, or a reghter, says Coee. They need to be able to deal with people in crisis or
dangerous situations.Soteriou sums up the advice he would give to
a young person considering Law, Public Saety,Corrections & Security: Its very rewardingknowing that you are doing something to help save
lives and property. You may not make a ortune, but you are doing work that helps people. I youare willing to have an open mind and keep learning,
you can move up the ranks. Within the cluster,
there are so many dierent opportunities orcareer advancement.

Communication is a constant in law andpublic saety careers. Reading, writing, and public speaking are integral parts o
daily work in law enorcement, reghting, and legal practice. Sergeant Jim Beck o theAustin Police Department says police ocers,or example, must be able to write well and
recall detailed acts when composing incidentreports. You have to be able to articulate whathappened, what you did, and why, says Beck,
a 12-year veteran.Police ocers and reghters oten interact
with the public, which requires good publicspeaking and social skills. Routine duties inboth elds include giving presentations to
children and adults about re prevention, personal saety, and crime prevention.
Presentation skills are essential or
lawyers presenting cases beore ajudge or jury, but they arent a
requirement or all attorneys. Some civil law attorneysnever end up in court, saysCindy Greenlea, a ormer
attorney and a criminaljustice instructor or the
Denton Independent SchoolDistrict. Greenlea addsthat attorneys practicingcivil, criminal, oradministrative law spend
a lot o time reading, writing, and researchingI practicing criminal law, they also rely oninvestigative skills and must dig through polic
and lab reports, view videotapes, and interviewwitnesses.
Tecoloy ue
Individuals in these proessions use technologdaily on the job. Beck says the speed at whichtechnology is advancing adds excitement to
his job. You really are getting an opportunityto work with some o the cutting-edge toolsin order to help you ght crime. A patrolcar computer allows ocers to researchoutstanding warrants and drivers licensesin the eld. Global Positioning Systemsotware shows some ocers where theyare being dispatched to and displays the
quickest route there.Fireghters in Beaumont who respond to
a hazardous material spill review a chemicalinventory list online rom their trucks to conrmhow best to saely contain and clean up thechemical, says Captain Patrick Grimes, a 27-yearveteran reghter.
Attorneys have access to wireless Internet and
computerized projection/video/audio equipmenin some courtrooms. This allows them to doon-the-spot research and give multimediapresentations. Research that once was perormeusing a law library is now done primarily online

Ive never been bored onesingle day o the 12 years Ive
been here, Beck says. Dailyduties or police ocers canrun the gamut, rom catching dangerousspeeders, to patrolling districts, to meetingwith citizens. Ocers can be called to
respond to a domestic dispute, a tracaccident, or another emergency at any timewhile working their shit, which can rangerom 8 to 12 hours a day. Other positionsin the police department, such as detective, require more oce-bound work.
Fireghters dont battle res every day,Grimes says. They are constantly training
and preparing or the next re or otheremergency. This job requires physicaltness and a thorough understanding othe technical aspects o the multiple toolsreghters use. Medical rescue skills arealso crucial. Since they are oten the rst
responders to an emergency, reghters willassist the injured or sick until an ambulancearrives. Fireghters work long shits, live at a
rehouse when on duty, and cooperate as ateam. Beaumont reghters spend 24 hourson the job ollowed by 48 hours o.
Attorneys schedule and workenvironment depend upon the law theypractice. I you go to work or a large civillaw rm, particularly when you rst start,
youll work long hours, but youll be paid
a lot, Greenlea says. Some attorneys whodo mediations and arbitrations never arguecases in court. Criminal deense attorneysand prosecutors, on the other hand, spenda lot o time in trials speaking beore judgesand juries, she says.

A career as a police ocer, reghter, or attorney can

hats the most important high schoolclass you can take when you want to
prepare or a career in Law, PublicSaety, Corrections & Security? Introductionto Criminal Justice? EmergencyCommunications? Crime in America? Sorry. The answer is none o the above.
Talk to the experts and youll learn thatthe most important course or aspiring
police ocers, reghters, or lawyersis English.
Dealing with people is primarily whatlaw enorcement ocers do, so they needto be able to communicate and speak tothe public, says E. C. Sherman, executivedirector o the Texas Police Association, a lawenorcement training organization. They
also produce a lot o reports, so writingintelligently and proessionally is important.
Read ad Wrt Rt
Language skills are important acrossthe cluster. Attorneys must write casebries, and read and comprehend changesin the law. Paramedics must be able to
communicate clearly with 911 dispatchers
when lives are on the line. Police ocersmust write detailed, clear, and accurate
reports o crime scenes and investigations.Senior Police Ocer Pat Briggs o the
Austin Police Department says police recruitsmust show their language ability just to entertraining or service. At the police academy, they will be asked to complete writingsamples,
he says.A solid background in core
academic courses such as mathand science is also important.Technology has changedpreparation in this cluster. For example, an innovativecourse in orensics is oered
in growing numbers oTexas school districts. To become orensicinvestigators like the ones on
CSI, students have to masterhigh school biology andchemistry and obtain a our-
year degree in science.

Rishanda Johnson, a senior inEstacado High School in Lubbock,
always wanted to be a nursethatis, until she ollowed a personal interestin law into Estacados Justice and LawMagnet Program.
The program combines in-class trainingin legal principles and procedures withexperience working in legal settings.Estacado students rotate through the
U.S. Marshals oce, the Lubbock PoliceAcademy, and the District Attorneys
oce, observing real
proessionals onthe job.
Johnson watched police ocers writereports and paralegals develop cases. She
attended lectures at the Texas Tech Schoolo Law and reported to her ellow studentsat Estacado.
I even met the law school dean, shesays. Because I went to Texas Tech andthen shared the inormation with otherstudents, I know about the university. Imno longer worried about studying law or
going to college. I know I can learn this.

be a patrol ocer, reghter, emergencymedical technician, or lawyer, such
programs can give you rsthand experiencein Law, Public Saety, Corrections &Security starting as early as the eighthgrade.
For more than 30 years, or example, theHouston Bar Association has sponsoredmock trials carried out by junior highstudents in real courtrooms. More than
38,000 students have participated in theprogram since it started threedecades ago.
Kay Sim, the bar associationsexecutive director, says arealaw students visit participatingeighth-grade classes once a weekor ve weeks, preparing students
or the mock trials. Every classcreates its own crime situation,Sim says.
Dierent students serve as judge, court clerk, and baili. Real judges let ususe their courtrooms, Sim says. Its nota scripted thing that we hand them. Every
student in the class plays a role.

Criminal justice programs in Texas highschools typically work hard to extendlearning beyond the walls o the classroom.
Since the instructors have a backgroundin criminal justice, students are getting
rsthand inormation. Teachers inviteguest speakers rom the FBI and localsheris departments into the classroom, and they take students out to departmentpractice elds.

creATe a caporTolioOne valuable tool that can help you getready or college and beyond is a careerportolioa collection o items that
document your achievements both inand out o school, assembled in oneconvenient package.
A career portolio is not simplya resume, although it can certainlyinclude one. So what should go in acareer portolio? A variety o things,
depending on your own personalexperiences. It could include transcriptand grades; writing samples; letterso recommendation rom teachers, mentors, or employers; awards youvereceived; and items that documentother activities, such as internships and
job shadowing experiences.
You need to be specicdates, howmany years, any awards, what theymeant, and who you received themrom, says Grace Brauchle, who helpsstudents put their portolios togetheras the career center coordinator orLehman High School in Kyle.
Brauchle says portolios come in
handy when students apply or jobs oradmission to college. First impressionsare a very big thing, she says, and
you want to be the one whose papersget passed around the oce. You wantto be the one where the admissionscounselors say, Wow, look at this one!
And a portolio doesnt have to besimply a collection o papers. Artistsand photographers use their portoliosto provide visual examples o theirwork, and so can you. Do you havephotos o someone giving you anaward? Put them in. How about a videoo a perormance? Include it on a DVD.
Do you have experience in Web design?Make an online portolio to showcasewhat you can do.

Following the terrorist attacks oSeptember 11, 2001, the LamarInstitute o Technology (LIT) in

About 85 percent o participants enterdirectly rom high school, while others jointo advance their military or law enorcementcareers. LIT also oers a crime scenetechnician degree with a ocus in orensicscience, an area that has drawn greater

As you graduate romhigh school, youllstand at an educational
crossroads. Your pathmay take you to a our-

associates degree. With seven more yearso school you can become a lawyer.
So where do you want to go? Here aresome options or postsecondary educationand training in the Law, Public Saety,Corrections & Security cluster.
O-te-Jo TraOn-the-job training is a viable option orstudents entering law enorcement and otherpublic saety careers. Dont think that thatmeans no more school, however. Almostevery career in Law, Public Saety, Corrections
& Security requires more education andtraining than you will get in high school.
The Texas Workorce Commissionhas projected the 50 astest-growingoccupations that students can enterdirectly rom high school with on-the-
job training. Its list includes a number o
Law, Public Saety, Corrections & Security
careersor example, police and sherispatrol ocers, detectives and criminalinvestigators, paralegal, dispatchers, andreghters.
Programs in these careers let recruits earnsalary and benets rom their employersas they learn their jobs. Although somelaw enorcement and public saety agencieshire employees without prior experience, most require applicants to complete basictrainingperhaps at a police or reacademyand pass certain exams.
At many Texas re departments, or
instance, applicants must pass a test calledthe Structural Fireghter Exam. Toprepare, students can receive training atcommunity colleges and re departmentsthat oer programs certied through theTexas Commission on Fire Protection.

such as mediator, paralegal, andcourt reporter, are accessible with anundergraduate degree or certication,

Texas has eight law schools, including some o the nations best. The University o Texas at Austin, orexample, was ranked 16th in a 2007

With increased competition in law schooladmissions, several Texas colleges have
