The BITS Commit-tee has been very busy!! L e s s o n s and con-certs, lead by Mick M a r t i n , for Sac-

ramento and Yolo County schools are in full swing. And everyone is loving it!! Check out the first hand account by ace high school reporter, Sarah Rominger. We're excited to be adding four schools in the Rio Linda School District , including elementary schools, as part of the ArtScapes grant. The after school guitar and bass lessons have started up at Rosemont and West Campus High Schools. Lew Fratis, Joe Lev and Jimmy Pailer are doing won-derful things and promoting the Blues with these young eager students.

On Saturday, March 8, BITS was honored to participate in Arts Resource Day at Sacramento State University. This was a 1-day conference highlighting the Arts for teachers and school ad-ministrators. BITS Committee member (and new Board of Di-rec tors member! ) , Pat ty Furey, organized a wonderful workshop where Mick Martin, Marta Gee, Kyle Rowland, and Michael McGowan (guest drum-mer, long time friend of Mick’s, and Yolo County Supervi-sor) demonstrated a short BITS lesson, teacher Mike Sato dis-cussed the importance of music in teaching all types of subjects, and Patty showed a slide show

Winters rocks! With Blues in the School by Sarah Rominger, Winters High School Student

regularly play together, the four of them came together for this concert and others like it. Dani Thomas, the Executive Director of the Yolo County Arts Council, gave a short introduc-tion about the program and the band, and then gave them the stage. The Palms was packed, nearly every seat occupied by a Winters student, musician or not. The band was excellent, and started at once with greetings to Winters students and teachers. After playing a couple of songs, Martin invited Winters High School musicians to join them on the stage to “jam”. Kyle Bowen and Joey “Rambo” Sanders were ready and waiting with their guitars, Mattie Long appeared with clarinet in hand, Rachel Mattingly and Rachel Chapman jumped on stage to harmonize (along with Dani Thomas) and Carlos Figueroa held it all together with his steady drum beat. Nick Hawley, Steven Lanfranco, and Joey Sanders also had the opportunity to play the song “Hey Joe”, made famous by Jimi

Hendrix, for the whole crowd. The entire concert was an enormous success, and could have easily lasted much longer than it did. Students became engaged with the music, singing, clapping, and even playing right up there on the stage with the rest of the band. It was a wonderful opportunity for these students, and enjoyed by all who attended.

Martin’s final words to the crowd really says it all, “You know what? Winters rocks! WINTERS ROCKS!” And we do.

The Sacramento Blues Society is a non-profit organization based on preserving and ap-preciating the low-key, stirring music that is the blues. This group also developed the area’s program for ‘Blues in the Schools’, where locally-based blues groups come to schools in the area and give concerts. The program began in spring of 2004, when Mick Martin, a lo-cal blues musician from West Sacramento, played a couple of concerts in the Sacramento High School. Cynthia Jaynes, a member of the Sacramento Blues Society, said that these concerts were “so well re-ceived…that we expanded to the Sacramento City School District middle and high school students. Mick [Martin] helped design the program and has led the lectures and performances that have now expanded to Yolo County…” Winters High School had the opportunity to be a part of this brilliant program on January 31, 2008, when Mick Martin and professional musicians from the Sacramento Blues Society held a concert in the Palms Playhouse on Main Street. Originally started in Sacramento, Martin has since shaken the whole blues scene, sharing his talented harmonica solos and gruff blues voice. At the Palms, Martin was accom-panied by Jimmy Pailer on guitar and vocals, Don Gates on drums, and Joe Lev on the bass guitar and vocals. Though these musicians do not

Born in 1957, Jeff Watson is a native Sacramentan. He grew up surrounded by music, as his mother played the piano and his step-father played drums in a western band. The family always had the radio playing music, from folk to jazz to opera. It was at one of the western gigs that he first saw a Sunburst Stratocaster, and knew he wanted to play one of those. At age 6, his mother bought a $14.95 Airline guitar for him and his sister to play. Then she paid a teenage neighbor boy $7.00 for seven lessons to teach them the seven major chords and a couple of songs. He devoured all the guitar music he could find, and played along with the radio and records. In fourth grade, the band didn’t have a guitar, so he brought home a sax. In junior high school, he switched to the drums, and, at age 13, had his first “professional” gig playing drums at the school dance. He majored in music in college, planning to be a musician or a music teacher. He had a band and played regularly around town. One of his friends began working at an auto body shop, and was making more money than music

teachers could earn, so he rearranged his priorities, and changed to a business major and took some automotive courses. This led to a day job at Maita Oldsmobile, which he quit the first chance he got to take his band on the road. The road trip turned out to be short, and a recession made it

very difficult for him to find another job. After finding a job at South-side Honda (where he was service manager for years) he later married, sold all his music gear and concentrated on career, home and family. Jeff now manages the body shop at Elk Grove Honda. In 1999, he was at a motor shop when the owner suggested they go to the Torch Club for a beer. A band was setting up, and Johnny Nugget introduced himself as the jam leader. Jeff’s friends were pushing him to get up and play, but he had not played in over 15 years, and did not feel he could do well. However, after a few more beers and a little taunting, he signed up. Johnny looked at him in his management outfit and started asking questions. Jeff knew the answers, including the question “Where is your guitar?” He said he “left it home”, and Johnny loaned Jeff his guitar. Jeff stayed on stage the rest of the night, enjoyed the experience, and came back a couple of weeks later. This time he even tried singing, and as Moose yelled encouragement from the bar, he knew he was going to play again. A co-worker asked him if he knew anyone interested in

buying a Stratocaster, and he bought it. Skip helped him out with the other equipment he needed, and he was on his way. We asked “What is your most memorable performance?” He said “Skip’s Music Store Anniversary”, as Skip walked up. Later he talked about playing with some big names, and what per-formances he enjoyed. He likes playing the Torch because they support the Blues; the Blue Lamp because they have designed the establishment for good sound, good stage, and artist comfort; and the Heritage because an art-ist’s every need is considered and it is very professionally run. As for the perfect gig, he says the perfect gig is playing in a place that appreciates live music and good musicians. Asked how he viewed the Sacramento music scene, he said the city is not a big supporter of live music. He believes it is a political decision, as other cities our size have vibrant music areas with city support. We have some very good talent among the local musicians, but only the musicians seem to recognize it. As for future hopes and dreams, he wants to take his music as far as he can, and be the best he can be. He says he plays with three great guys, and wants to keep up with them. Editors Note: The Jeff Watson Band was the first runner-up in the local band competition to represent SBS in the International Blues Competition held in Memphis this January.

At NorCal Blues Fest iva l on Saturday June 21 and

Torch Club on Saturday June 28

Warren Davis was born in Salinas, California, in 1954. At age 6, his mother made him take piano lessons. In sixth grade, he broke his arm, and didn’t have to take lessons. But when he got to Junior High, he found that being in the dance band was cool, so began playing again. Although that ended his formal education, he found he could play by ear and get the sounds he wanted. He was just fourteen when he got a steady job playing at a strip bar in Salinas. He is now amazed they even let him in the place. He knew he loved music, and wanted to be around others that appreciated it. Warren has a diverse interest in music, all kinds, and all ways. Growing up, he followed whatever bands were known at the time, following the latest, and going to the Fill-more West with any one headed that way. One show at the Fillmore drew him to the blues. The show was advertised as “The Kings”, and Albert, B.B. and Freddy were all together on the same stage.. Those were the days of the big groups, large ensembles with a full, professional sound, and the Kings had it all. Asked about favorites, he said it changed often, and he followed all the keyboard players and guitarists he could. Although he says some jazz is too far out for him, he likes swing and vocal jazz, soul, gospel, bluegrass, R & B and world music. KMVR is a favorite spot on his radio dial. While music is his love, Warren’s “day job” is with SMA America, a worldwide solar power company. They distribute the com-

puterized cells that convert solar to energy to distributers. He is enthusiastic about his work, as he believes this company is ahead of the curve on the growing field of alternative source energy. (Capital Public Radio discussed one of their programs March 14th on Science Friday.) What’s his most memorable per-formance? It was at the Shoreline Amphitheater. They had a yearly

show that he played, and one year he and John Broadway Tucker played on the same bill as B. B. King and the Neville Brothers. He has also opened for Etta James, and played with Elvin Bishop, Coco Montoya, Chris Cain, Terry Hyatt, Tommy Castro, Terry Hanck, Jeff Watson Band, Smokin’ Joe Kubeck, Shane Dwight Band and more. Warren’s perfect gig is the Blues Cruise. (No hesi tat ion there!) What does it have going for it? Music everywhere, so much talent all wanting to share and help, no hassle with security and no one pushing dr inks , everyone hav ing fun and encouraging each other, and just the overall environment. It also is only seven days – Warren does not like living out of a suitcase. He learned that early when, at 18, he went with a band on an extended West Coast tour. Warren believes the Sacramento music scene is u n d e r d e v e l o p e d . There are not many venues large enough

to draw out of town musicians. Club owners are shy about taking any chances with new or unknown musicians and the same expected acts are repeatedly booked. Local music lovers expect to be able to see a different act each time they go out, but that is seldom possible. When asked what are his future plans and dreams, he said “Keep playin’ till the day I die!! But not on the road!” While he loves to perform, he also enjoys writing and creating music, and is putting more time into that area now. Still, if he is offered a gig on the Blues Cruise, he is there! Editors Note: Warren Davis plays piano, organ and keyboards with the Jeff Wat-son Band, among others.

Meet Leo Bootz

The next big event in Leo’s musical life was at age 20, when he found out Sam’s Hofbrau was going to have live music. The first band he saw was Johnny “Guitar” Knox and the Blues Busters. He says “Johnny Knox blew my mind!” Between sets he went up and talked to Johnny, who “gave me good advice, and was very Infor-mative and passionate about the blues”. Leo asked for lessons and Johnny gave Leo his address. Leo says “He showed me slide tunings,

corrected my finger positioning, and en-couraged me to listen to Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Freddy King, Robert Johnson, and Son House. It is amazing that after all these years one of my best friends and family is Johnny "Guitar" Knox.” Johnny often refers to Leo as “My son”. Leo got together with Mike Farrell and Early Times and formed The Melting Blues Project. Leo and M i k e l a t e r f o r m e d F a t Molly’s Kitchen (FMK) and re-ceived label in-terest, but being young, they disbanded and started their own projects. Leo a n d D a n n y O’Grady formed The Southside Shuffle and Mike formed Sexx 66.

Leo Bootz was born in 1966 in Ketchikan, Alaska. His dad was a Chief Cook in the Merchant Marine, traveling the world, and spoiling his family when he was home. He tried to be home for Christmas, which was Leo’s birthday, and usually made a big occasion of the holiday, including hiring a band for Leo’s party. Leo grew up in Seattle, where he haunted Myers Music store, a small family run shop near his neighborhood. Whenever they approached him, he would say he was just shopping. When he was 9 years old, his sister Lourdes asked him what he wanted for Christmas, and he said a guitar. They went to Myers Music to see how much a guitar would be, the owner said he had a guitar and amp “just for you”. As he carried it home on the bus he kept peeking in the box and touching the strings. He bought chart books and taught himself how to play, trying to emulate the classic rock on the radio. When encouraged to learn songs people could relate to, he found charts and learned to sing and play all the Beatles songs he could find. He was teased about playing “old fashioned” songs, but still was encouraged to sing, and that’s when he decided his voice was his best musical instrument. A move to Sacramento in 1979 changed Leo’s life. His dad was no longer around, and he found his parents were divorcing. No more big parties with bands and relatives spoiling him, with just him and his mom as a family. He retreated to his room with a Jimi Hendrix and a Jeff Beck album, and learned every note.

Leo left on sabbatical to Seattle for awhile, and on his return Danny started up Lee Bootz and the Southside Shuffle. Leo invited Mike Farrell to join them, Mike added the Shuffle to his other band commitments, and Southside Shuffle has been a popular band in the Sacramento area since the 1990’s. Recently, Drummer Paul Wells’ garage served as a studio as the Shuffle cut their CD “Hand Me Downs”. Leo says “So far it has been like a dream come true to have these guys playing with me. I can’t wait for our next show.” Editors Note: Lee Bootz and the South-side Shuffle was the second runner-up in the band competition to represent SBS at the International Blues Competition in Memphis in January.

1861 Moreland & Arbuckle

Northern Blues Their music has been described as juke joint/back porch/hill country boogie. 1861 is all of that, plus it rocks! This is a lilting ver-sion of blues that will keep you listening over and over. I can see how they got to the finals at the IBC, and signed by a recording company.

Songs Famed for Joy and Sorrow

Samuel James

Northern Blues This solo artist creates beautiful soulful blues from guitar, banjo, harmonica and piano. He writes contemporary blues and delivers them in

yesteryear’s mode. This is a sit down, lean back and listen cd that will find it’s way to the top of your collection.

Roamin’ and Ramblin’ Honeyboy Edwards

Earwig What can I say? Honey-boy, the W. C. Handy 2007 Acoustic Blues Artist choice, is a legend. Grammy winner Edwards gathered the best in

musicians for this recording. Bobby Rush Johnny “Yard Dog” Jones, Billy Branch, Sugar Blue and Walter Horton show up on the selections. Miss this cd, and miss out.

Born to be Wilder Webb Wilder

Blind Pig Wilder plays raucous, rollin’ western tinged blues that say “ready to party”, even if you aren't. I usually am!

Editor—Blue Notes!

4116 Lotus Avenue

Sacramento, CA 95822

is a 501 ( c ) 3 nonprofit organization formed to preserve and promote blues

music as an art form. The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS), founded 1979, is one of the oldest blues societies in California. The SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene and bringing internationally re-nowned artists to the region. SBS is an affiliate member of The Blues Foundation. We provide educational op-portunities for young people with the foun-dation’s “Blues In The Schools” Program, and other programs in partnerships with area schools. The Sacramento Blues Society produces a newsletter, “Blue Notes” on a Bi-Monthly schedule (SIX times a year) to our mem-bership, and a weekly e-mail letter “SacBlues News” to keep members posted on all Blues events in the community.

Membership is $20.00 a year individual and $35.00 a year family.
