Thank you to all the parents who helped their children dress-up for Book Week parade. What an array of champions we had. The reasons students gave for the champions they chose to represent, demonstrates how much our students consider and value leadership qualities.
The Children's Book Council of Australia Book Awards have been an-nounced. They are:
Younger Readers Book of the Year category " Crow Country" (Winner) " Nanberry: Black Brother White" (Honour award) " The Truth about Verity Sparks" (Honour award)
Early Childhood Book of the Year category " The Runaway Hug" (Winner) " Come Down, Cat" (Honour award) " That's Not A Daffodil" (Honour award)
Picture Book of the Year category " A Bus Called Heaven" (Winner) " The Dream of the Thylacine" (Honour award) " Flood" (Honour award)
We should be proud of the fact that of the 111 noteable books listed this year on the CBCA web-site, about ninety per cent of the titles. had already been catalogued and available to our students
All library books are now due back at school as there is a "no borrow-ing" policy over the school holidays. This provides the ideal time for families to visit the Heathcote Library situated behind the CoGB offices in High Street.
A few families still need to pay, a the Office, for "Lost Books" before I have to waste time sending home "reminders Cooperative Narratives and Nouns.
One of the activities we have undertaken in Junior Unit Library lessons to promote cooperative learning and establishing the format of narra-tives (setting, problem stated, quest, climax(oh, oh!) resolution). Stu-dents divided into groups of three, for this twenty minute activity. Each member of the group was given a piece of paper to write a noun on. The students were then told to combine their three nouns into one nar-rative. All features of a narrative had to be included in their story. Here are some of the stories. Please remember these are first drafts and the stories need further conferencing to make them ready for publication. I think the way the students have combined their nouns into one narrative is quite ingenious. Well done to the students!
Once upon a time there was a fox that liked to kill chickens. Jack, the farmer, knew he would soon have no chickens left, so he waited and watched for the fox to visit the chook house. Suddenly the fox appeared and Jack hit him with a glass vase that he was carrying. The fox died. Jack was so sorry that he put flowers on the fox's grave. One day Teddy and a Foxy were Playing with their blocks. They built toy houses for each other. The next day the toy block houses had been turnes into real houses. Teddy and Foxy lived happily ever after in their special homes. One sunny day a cat climbed up a tree. The cat got stuck on a hook that had been hung there. Ty and George came along and climbed up the tree and unhooked the poor cat. The heroes were Ty and George. Once there was a boy, named Kane, who held the record for being the best hider. One day Kane was hiding in a box and he was reading a book he found in there. Then Kane held the record for being the smart-est boy in the world too.
