TRANSCRIPT
At Exeter International we have been creating memories and crafting our trademark extraordinary journeys to
Central Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, and Central Asia for over 25 years. Our specialty is to distill the best of
the best in iconic places that are on so many people’s travel must-do list.
We are not a call center of nameless, faceless people. We do not try to be everything to everyone. We are a
small team of specialists. We are all committed to providing the best travel experiences to our destinations.
Each member of our team has travelled extensively throughout our destinations, giving them insider
knowledge lacking in many other tour operators.
Our Extraordinary Experiences are different, unusual, and often closed to the general public. We can offer
special insider access that takes you beyond the typical tourist sites. We know how important it is to remain
authentic and increasingly going beyond the well-known sites is what is important to our guests—discovering
the little-known museum or street market that adds to their experience. We do this through our local
knowledge, cultivating our extensive contacts and regularly visiting each destination to enable us to share the
most up-to-date insider information with you, our valued partner.
The most important part of your trip will be your guides. Guides come in many quality levels, especially in our
part of the world. We have worked with a core group of the best of the best for over 20 years. We know
them like family and if they weren't the best, they wouldn't work for us. Simply stated, a guide can make or
break your experience. You should have 100% confidence in who is introducing you to your guide and the
level of guiding that you are going to get throughout the countries you will be visiting. The best does indeed cost more and we pay our guides at the very top of the market, with pride.
You'll also want to know what kind of vehicle your tour will include. We use luxury late-model vehicles, often
Mercedes, Audi, BMW, or Volkswagen, depending on the size of the vehicle you need. You'll want to see
things that may or may not be open to the public and go in early or after hours before the crowds whenever
possible. We also make every effort to skip lines whenever possible. Avoiding long museum lines is one of our
top priorities and we work hard to minimize the wait time to get into the most popular sights in each city,
maximizing your time in each destination.
You'll want impeccable planning and someone to bounce ideas off of before your trip and speak English as well
as you do while planning your trip so there are no cultural misunderstandings when you arrive. You'll also
want someone to talk to if your trip is not perfect when you get home. These are all ways that we distinguish
ourselves from all other companies.
A lot goes into our travel program design. We arrange the program so that it is flawless and effortless for our
travelers from the time they set foot in the first city until they leave us. The expertise to set up an itinerary
like this comes after years of investing in staff on both sides of the Atlantic, and this too is a value that is
incorporated into our traveler's trips with us.
Upon arrival into Budapest, your Exeter International driver will be waiting for you outside of customs and
baggage claim. Please note that no airfare is included in your trip cost.
You will be transferred to the historic and perfectly located hotel, in the center of Pest. On the way to the
hotel, you will see sights of historical significance, including St. Stephen’s Basilica, a cross between Neo-
Classical and Renaissance-style architecture completed in the late 19th century.
Over the centuries, Budapest flourished as a crossroads where East meets West in the heart of Europe.
Ancient cultures such as the Magyars, the Mongols and the Turks have all left an indelible mark on this magical
city. Buda and Pest, separated by the Danube River, are characterized by an assortment of monuments,
elegant streets, wine taverns, coffee houses and Turkish baths. Upon arrival at your hotel, enjoy the rest of
your day at leisure.

This morning meet your driver and guide to explore the other side of the city—the hilly and green Buda side.
First head up to Gellert Hill for sweeping views of the city. Afterwards, head to the castle district anchored by
Buda’s historic Royal Palace, the former Hapsburg palace during the 19th century and rebuilt in the Neo-
Classical style after it was destroyed during World War II.
A stroll through the castle area, known as Varhegy, will take you to the Fisherman’s Bastion for the most
impressive views over Pest, across the Danube. Here you’ll see the Matyas Church, a Neo-Gothic
reconstruction dating from 1874 and in which many organ and choral concerts can be heard.
Afterwards, drive back across the river to dive into Budapest’s best art museum. If you like, today you can
stop at the moving memorial of the Shoes on the Danube Promenade. Located near the parliament, this
memorial honors the Jews who fell victim to the fascist militiamen during WWII.
Today you will visit the newly reopened Fine Arts Museum. A portion of this has reopened just recently after
being closed more than three years and the entire complex is being redesigned to be the Budapest Museum
Quarter project. The Museum of Fine Arts is Hungary’s premier gallery of non-Hungarian works of art from
ancient history up to present times. You will find Egyptian, Roman and Greek exhibits along with a very nice
collection of Italian art ranging from the twelfth through the eighteenth centuries. The collection of Spanish
Masters is extraordinary. You may elect to have your guide and driver leave you here when your touring is
finished to explore on your own or to perhaps enjoy the attached Fine Art Bistro.

Today can explore the beauty of Central Pest with your guide. Prior to visiting the Jewish Quarter, your guide
will take you to the Budapest Market Hall. Built by Eiffel in the 19th century, the covered market boasts
soaring metal columns, high walkways and beautiful produce shops. More than being a place where one can
purchase some handcrafted and typical Hungarian souvenirs, it’s a market where locals go to purchase their
produce and meats – a meeting place for many and a place where you can enjoy authentic local flavor.
Next, your guide will take you to the Great Budapest Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, and the Holocaust
Memorial. Since the 19th century, Budapest’s Jewish community became well integrated into Hungarian society
and three synagogues were built. In 1944, a ghetto was created in Pest, which was later followed by the
deportation of thousands of Jews. You can walk through part of the former Jewish neighborhood to see an old
synagogue on Rumbach Street.
From here, your guide will take you to the Great Synagogue, the largest of the three previously mentioned
and impressive in its Byzantine and Moorish style architecture. You can also visit the Jewish Museum that is
part of the synagogue, and afterwards, walk over to the Holocaust Memorial. The sculpture of a weeping
willow was designed in memory of the 600,000 Hungarian Jews who died under the Nazis in World War II.
Enjoy this afternoon at your leisure to explore independently.

Afterwards, take the short drive to Hero’s Square and see the Millennium Monument, designed to
commemorate Hungary’s Millennium Celebrations in 1896, though not completed until 1929. It marked
Budapest’s high point of its development in the history of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. As you drive
today, you will see Andrassy Boulevard. Driving this beautiful boulevard will give you a glimpse into the
stunning architecture that Budapest is known for, especially the beautiful art nouveau buildings that have been
preserved.
Today you will also visit the House of Terror near the State Opera House which used to be the headquarters of the Arrow Cross Fascist Association prior to World War II. After World War II, the building was used as
the Communist Party Headquarters, and was used by both organizations as one of the most notorious prisons
in Hungary. Today it’s an exhibit about life under fascism in Hungary. It’s a graphic and powerful reminder of
the brutality of the regime.

This morning your driver will meet you at your hotel for the transfer to the station to meet the express train
(2.5 hours) to Vienna. First class tickets are included. This route may also be covered via private car and
driver with stops in the countryside at additional cost.
Early afternoon arrival into Vienna, where your private driver will welcome you and transfer you to the hotel
in the very center of the city.
The remainder of the day will be at leisure. Vienna is a city whose history stretches back over 2,000 years. Originally a Celtic Settlement, it became part of the Roman Empire in 15 BC. The Romans were forced to
leave the region during the fourth century as northern tribes regained their foothold in Eastern Europe. By
1155, the Babenbergs declared Vienna a “civitas” indicating that it was developing into a well-ordered
community. From this time forward Vienna grew under the influence of the Byzantium Empire, the Orient,
Martin Luther, the threat of the Turks, Emperor Franz Joseph, Maria Theresa, Richard the Lion Heart, Karl
Marx, and a host of other fascinating events and people, creating one of the world’s great cultural centers.

This morning your guide will meet you in your hotel lobby. Vienna is a wonderful city to see on foot, as most
major sights are located very close together. During your walk this morning with your guide, you will see the
soaring St. Stephens Cathedral with its unusual colored ceramic tile roof. Your guide will take you through
the interior of the cathedral and, if you have the energy, you can climb to the top of the steeple for a
spectacular view over central Vienna!
Before visiting the Hofburg Palace, you’ll have a quick visit of the Hapsburg Imperial Crypt in the Capuchin
Church. You’ll have a quick introduction to the entire Hapsburg ruling family before continuing.
Afterwards, you can continue on your walking tour of the Hofburg Palace complex. Your guide will take you
into the lavish private living quarters of Empress Elizabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph from the 18th and 19th
Centuries. Empress Elizabeth (Sisi) was the Austrian’s Princess Di and prior to entering the Imperial
Apartments, there is an exhibition of her life, which is quite interesting.
When you exit the Hofburg, your guide will show you some of the most famous coffeehouses of Vienna,
including Demel, located not far from the Hofburg. Demel is the perfect place to stop for a rest and a snack.

Today, meet your guide and board the local tram with your guide to head to the nearby Belvedere Palace and
Gardens. This palace, built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, is situated on a gently sloping
hill. The two main palaces (upper and lower) are linked by formal French gardens and both now house
wonderful art collections. Today you will focus on the Upper Belvedere, which holds a wonderful collection
of 19th and 20th century art, including the best Klimt collection in the world.
Afterward, you might want to hop on the Ring Tram with your guide to take the short journey around the
historic Ring that encircles Vienna. You’ll see all the most important buildings and monuments of the city in
this one journey.
Later, if you like, your guide will take you to the Naschmarkt, not far from your hotel, for a glimpse into one
of the best markets in Vienna. This market dates to the 16th century and now features a huge array of food,
from fresh fruits and vegetables, to spices, bread and pastries. There are also several small restaurants
featuring different cuisines – the perfect place to stop for an afternoon respite.

This morning your driver will meet you for your transfer to the station to meet your express train to Prague
(five hours). First class tickets are included. This route may also be covered via private car and driver with
stops in the countryside at additional cost.
Late afternoon arrival into Prague, where you will be met by your driver for your transfer to your hotel in the
city center.
Perhaps more than any other city in Europe, Prague has kept its pre-modern charm. Spared the destruction of the Second World War, the ancient structures of the city still exist in their original state. Prague is a walking
city as it was designed over many centuries for the pedestrian and the horse. The inner city lacks major
avenues as found in Paris or Rome, giving the city its unique character.

This morning your guide and driver will meet you for an overview drive of some of Prague’s top sites. Drive
by the famous Dancing House and through the historical area of Vysehrad, with its 10th century fort. You will
also observe modern local Czech life with a drive through the bustling residential area of Vinohrady, once
covered by vineyards. You will then head towards the Castle District and Hradčany.

Today you have a VIP visit to the Strahov Monastery. Here, you will be invited into the two main halls of the
library (the Philosophical Hall and the Theological Hall). These two halls are always viewed by the public through the narrow doorways at the end of each room, but you will be allowed to enter the rooms to walk
alone among the ancient books and artifacts.
Included today will also be a visit to the Prague Castle complex. This castle, designed with courtyards inside
of courtyards, is a fascinating view into the lives of the Czech monarchy. You might want to step into the
towering and wonderfully Neo-Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral inside the complex. As a side note, the castle
complex and the cathedral are often very crowded with lines. Once in the castle territory, if the line is
daunting, skip the cathedral. You can then visit Lobkowicz Palace.
We love a visit to the Lobkowicz Palace. The audio guide that you will use is recorded by Mr. William
Lobkowicz himself, an American who reclaimed his lost family property. The tour will give you an insight into
their life and their collection of paintings, decorative art, music scores (one with Mozart’s own handwritten
notes), arms and armors. Don’t miss the original score of Beethoven’s Eroica!
Your day will end in the Malá Strana or Little Quarter, which is best known for the Wallenstein Palace and
Church of St. Nicholas. Also, it is here in the Malá Strana that you will find many charming restaurants and
unique shops full of Bohemian glass and the marionettes that are so famous in Prague.

Today your guide will meet you in your hotel lobby and will and take you through Prague’s famous Jewish
Quarter and the Old Town. Visit the historic synagogues, including the stunning Spanish Synagogue and the
ancient Old-New Synagogue, which was built in the late 13th Century, making it the oldest synagogue still in
use in Europe. While in the Jewish Quarter, you may decide to visit the Old Jewish Cemetery, founded in the
late 15th Century and still corresponding to its original medieval size. Over the centuries, more than 100,000
people are believed to have been buried here.
After your tour of the Jewish Quarter, your guide will take you through Prague’s storybook Old Town. You’ll want to see the beautiful expanse of the Charles Bridge but it’s a more magical experience to visit it very late
or very early on your own, when it’s free of the souvenir stands and tourists. Your guide will give you a quick
lesson of Prague’s history, evident in every building and small passage way of this 800 year old city. Be sure
not to miss the fairytale-like Old Town Hall Tower (1364) that stands above Old Town Square- you can even
go to the top of the tower for a splendid view over the district.
Finally, you will enter New Town- which is new because it was only founded in 1348! Here you can visit
Wenceslas Square, were over the many centuries demonstrations of civil discontent have taken place. At the
top of the square you will see the imposing building of the National Museum and the Monument to St
Wenceslas, the patron of the Czech lands, by sculptor Josef Myslbek.

The Four Seasons Gresham Palace is the product of a painstaking 110 million Euro restoration and is now the
most opulent hotel in all of Budapest. The hotel, which opened its doors on June 18, 2004, is housed in a
historic landmark palace on the banks of the Danube River and has lived a rich history entertaining celebrities
as they pass through Budapest.
This is a “destination hotel” of historical significance. This 179-room hotel was badly damaged in WW II when
the Germans detonated the Chain Bridge in front of the building. However, thanks to the work of numerous
artists, masons, and talented metal workers, today guests may once again enjoy what has always been
Budapest’s most prestigious address. This is simply, without question, the finest hotel in the city.
All guestrooms offer very spacious accommodations, featuring marble bathrooms that include a deep soaking
tub, separate glass-walled shower and large vanity mirror. Most offer the WC in a separate alcove with a third telephone. Rooms offer sumptuous down duvets and pillows.
Gresham Room: Gresham Rooms are located throughout the hotel and feature 409 to 506 square feet of
space, allowing them to have a small sitting area. Rooms may feature one king bed or two twin beds. They
offer views of the courtyard or the neighboring streets. These rooms are quite spacious, so they can
accommodate an extra bed if required.

This luxury Viennese hotel is part of the city like the Opera House, the Prater Ferris wheel, the Fiaker horse
carriages and the Lipizzaner horses. The Sacher, as the Viennese call it, is a hotel that combines contemporary
Viennese comfort and luxury with the charm and feel of the old Habsburg monarchy. In 1876, Eduard Sacher
founded the Hotel Sacher in Vienna. He was the son of the creator of the Original Sacher-Torte, a unique
chocolate cake. Soon after its creation, the Sacher became a world famous meeting point for politicians, artists
and the aristocracy. Since 1934, the hotel has been run by the Gürtler family, who is very keen on maintaining
the hotel’s old tradition.
A simple glance from its windows shows the hotel’s special location. It is right in the city center, close to the
pedestrian shopping area Kärtnerstraße, opposite the Opera House and only a tiny walk away from St.
Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg and the elegant Ringstraße, a road which boasts Vienna’s major sites, like the
Burgtheater and the City Hall.
All 152 rooms and suites are recently renovated, newly arranged and equipped with the latest technology,
offering all amenities of a luxury hotel.
Deluxe Rooms: These rooms feature between 375 to 430 square feet and offer top-of-the-range luxury and
comfort. All rooms are carefully decorated in light colors and with elaborate antiques and original paintings of
famous artists. The bathrooms are elegant and efficient with all the necessary amenities and house-brand bath
products. Bedding is either one king or two twins and views are generally of the city.

The Augustine is located in Prague's charming neighborhood of Mala Strana. The 101-room property has been
created from a complex of five buildings, most of which are historical monuments. The largest and most
important structure is St. Thomas's Monastery, which dates to the 1400s. Key historic features such as
cloistered terraces, wooden ceilings, wine vaults and stone arches have been incorporated into the hotel
design. Decor is a unique mix of contemporary and traditional that draws upon the wonderful Czech design
of the early 20th century, making the Augustine one of few luxury hotels that offers a real sense of place.
The hotel features the Augustine Restaurant with a beautiful courtyard setting to be enjoyed when weather
permits. Don’t miss the cellar St. Thomas Brewery Bar, located in the monastery’s original brewery building,
complete with 17th century stalactites and stalagmites. The hotel also features a fitness center and extensive
spa services.
All rooms have been designed to reflect the monastic history and features of the hotel and combine
contemporary furniture and design with traditional features. Decorative features are inspired by early 20th
century Czech Cubism. Most rooms feature parquet flooring.
