AT CALVIN, YOU’LL
FIND INSPIRATION IN A
CREATOR WHO INTRICATELY
CONSTRUCTED A WORLD SO
AMAZING THAT YOU CAN’T
HELP BUT MARVEL AT EVERY
SQUARE INCH OF IT. YOU’LL
WANT TO LEARN. EXPLORE.
IMAGINE. CREATE. RENEW.
WE HAVE A WORD FOR
THAT FEELING:
WONDER.
DANIEL HICKEY ’19
Parma Heights, OhioWriting
LIVE AND LEADAt Calvin, the freedom to explore the
world without reservation changes
you. It empowers you to do some
pretty world-changing things. In that
freedom, you’ll find the courage to
push back darkness and amplify
light. In other words, you’ll lead.
In high school, Daniel Hickey didn’t
consider himself much of a leader—or a
future Calvin student. A bit of Icelandic
post-rock helped him discover that he
was both.
“I grew up going to Christian school,
but I didn’t want to go to a Christian
college,” he admits. “The things I
was excited about weren’t happening
in church. They were happening at
punk shows in old bowling alleys
and dusty basements.”
“But I read that Sigur Rós had played
at Calvin. And mewithoutyou. And
David Bazan. It made no sense to
me—why would a Christian college
book bands that my youth pastor
told me not to listen to?“
One year later, Daniel doesn’t just
know the answer to that question;
he’s living it. With the freedom to
seek God’s truth anywhere—even
backstage at indie rock shows—this
Calvin sophomore has added a few
lines to his resume: writing major,
member of four campus bands, podcast
producer—and this year, dorm leader.
“I’ve gravitated toward the idea
of helping other Calvin students
feel anchored here like I have.
Maybe, at the very least, just
hanging out in my dorm room and
talking about a great record together
can make someone feel good about
who they are and what they’re
passionate about.”
Sound unlikely? Not at all. At
Calvin, courageous freedom means
never underestimating what you
(or anyone else) are capable of.
BEGIN YOUR QUEST
Truth isn’t just about what we know.
It’s about what we discover about
God and his creation—and the
journey we take to get there. Even
if that journey brings you waist-deep
into Plaster Creek, Michigan’s most
contaminated watershed.
That’s where you’ll find junior
Thuy-Tien Nguyen.
“The E. coli bacteria levels in the creek
are fifty times higher than the [safe]
body contact levels, so even touching
it is dangerous,” she says.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped her from
joining the Plaster Creek Stewards, a
collaboration of Calvin students, faculty
and staff committed to bringing restoration
to this vital habitat.
Over the last five years, the Plaster
Creek project has given students like
Thuy-Tien hands-on experience ranging
from the practical (building innovative
rain gardens in neighborhoods
surrounding the watershed) to the
high-tech (using a DNA-sequencing tool
to identify harmful bacteria and viruses).
Imagine it: next fall, you might help
save an entire habitat. At Calvin College,
that’s what truth looks like.

Grand Rapids, Mich. Education
dream of majoring in early childhood
education? Would she join the track team
to throw shot put and discus? Would she
serve on the Upperclass Task Force?
Yes, to all of that and more.
With the support of her Calvin mentors
(whom she aptly describes as “my seven
campus moms”), Bethany is thriving.
This past May, she qualified for nationals
and finished as the 15th-ranked shot put
thrower in the country. This fall, she’ll
step into a local elementary classroom
to fulfill her dream of teaching.
But for Bethany, the best part might
be the five-minute walks across campus
that always seem to take fifteen. That’s
what happens when you say yes to all
the friends who want to talk.
“Words cannot describe my experiences
at Calvin: the connections with professors,
the connections with people on my floor
or in my major … finding my best friends,
finding my mentors to help right when
I need it and push me to keep striving.
If I wasn’t at Calvin, I don’t think I
would be doing any of this.”
PURSUE EXCELLENCE From athletics to academics,
empowered by our awesome
Creator, you’ll find the courage
to thrive at Calvin.
Bethany Love’s journey began with
a question.
“I remember asking my mom, ‘Can I even
afford to go to college?’ She told me, ‘Yes.
God will find a way.’ She was right.”
God said yes—and for three years,
Bethany has been saying yes to every
opportunity that comes her way as a
Calvin student.

DISCOVER GOD’S CALLAt Calvin, your talents will be forged
and refined by a dedicated Christian
community. You will expand your mind,
mature your beliefs and cultivate a life
that honors God and his creation.
Which means this: if you’re wondering
what your life will look like in four years,
we’ve got your back.
And “we” includes Calvin English
professor Lew Klatt.
This Juniper Prize–winning author
currently serves as Grand Rapids’ official
poet laureate—and he loves helping Calvin
students find the intersections where their
faith and talents meet, because he knows
just how intimidating that can seem.
“It’s easy to be simplistic about these things,
but I think we need an understanding of
vocational discipleship that is nuanced
and complex—that by the light of scripture
takes in truth wherever we can find it.”
So go ahead and wonder about the future.
Calvin’s community—and professors—will
help you find your place in God’s big world.
Right here on Calvin’s campus, beneath an ever-changing canopy of trees, inside
innovative classrooms, stretched out on the Commons Lawn or settled into a new
favorite gathering spot, you will discover the courage to wonder. Trusting that all
things are under Christ’s control, you will explore freely, experience community
and embrace this truth: by taking a leap of faith, you will find your place to stand.
CULTIVATE COURAGEOUS WONDER
ENGAGE THE WORLDIgnited by passion, equipped with knowledge
and guided by faith, Calvin will prepare you
to serve where your abilities and passions
meet truth.
At just six months old, Elvin Vindel Pinto
traveled from Honduras to Grand Rapids for
a surgery that saved his life. After five months
of recovery, he returned to his family in Honduras
and grew up dreaming of becoming an engineer
like both of his parents.
Today, he’s back in Grand Rapids living his
dream as an engineering student at Calvin.
And this time, he’s the one doing the saving.
Along with a team of faculty and staff, Elvin
is making strides toward reducing carbon
dioxide emissions and improving energy efficiency
on Calvin’s campus through the Calvin Energy
Recovery Fund project (CERF).
According to Elvin, “[CERF] gives people an idea
of how a small change can make a big impact.”
“It’s a job, but I’m not doing this for the money.
I’m doing it for the benefit it has for Calvin—and
not just Calvin, but for the whole community.”

GET OUT THERE
Every January, hundreds
of Calvin students travel
around the world to learn
and serve in places like
Haiti, Israel, China and
the rainforests of Costa
Rica, where this picture
was taken.
THE WORLD AWAITSYou’ll do more than travel in our off-campus
programs—you’ll gain a completely new
perspective that changes the way you
think and live.
GET OUT THERE BOLD AMBITIONFor Ryan Roff ’08, boldSOCKS isn’t just Grand
Rapids’ first (and only) fashion-forward sock store.
It’s a mission—an extension of Christ’s call to seek
renewal in every square inch of creation. That’s
why every pair of Statement Sockwear-branded
socks he sells provides 100 days of clean water for
people in Rwanda through a partnership with the
non-profit organization 20 Liters.
But is that enough? The true cost of cheap fashion
can be found in textile factories around the world,
where workers are paid little and treated poorly.
“Fashion is one of the worst [industries],” Ryan
confesses. “We are trying to produce low cost
products, fast. We need to participate in that
story in a different way.”
Ryan knew boldSOCKS could do better, so he
traveled thousands of miles to Colombia to build a
partnership with an ethical textile manufacturer.
The socks cost 400% more to produce, and Ryan
wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’ve found that embracing Godly heartbreak,
and even confessing how I’ve been part of this
injustice in the world, can move me closer to
him and to those that are suffering.”RYAN ROFF ’08

LEGACY MATTERSIn 1876, the Christian Reformed
Church founded Calvin College
as a ministry training school,
naming it after 16-century
reformer John Calvin. That
first year, Calvin welcomed
a total of seven students.
From those humble beginnings,
a world-class liberal arts
institution was born. Today,
Calvin College is home to
thousands of students and offers
more than 100 different majors
and programs. The historic creeds
and confessions of Reformed
Christianity continue to guide
the college’s understanding of
scripture and inform its mission,
just as they did in 1876.
For 140 years, Calvin people have
lived into Christ’s bold promise
to make all things new. So if you
believe things can be better—if
you feel called to do something
big—there’s no better place to
start than here.
PLACE MATTERSA legendary hot dog joint. World-
class museums. Artisan coffee,
miles of bike and running trails,
and farm-to-table restaurants.
Grand Rapids has all that a
college town should offer and
then some.
And Calvin roots go deep here, because we’re fully invested in this piece of God’s creation.
Perhaps that explains why so
many Calvin alumni have founded
businesses and nonprofits right
here in Grand Rapids—from
ArtPrize, an international art
competition, to Two Scotts, an
award-winning barbecue joint.
This is a great city to explore,
and it’s an even better one for
launching your career.
