The AT-S39 manag ement software comes pre-installed o n the switch
with default settings for all operat ing parameters. If the default settings
are adeq uate for your network, you can use the sw itch as an unmanag ed
switch simply by connecting the unit to your network, as explained inthe hardw are insta llat ion g uide, and pow ering ON the device.
NoteThe default settings for the manag ement softw are can be found in
Appendix A,AT-S39 Default Settingson pa ge 312.
To actively manag e a sw itch, such as to chang e or adjust the operating
parameters, you must access the switchs AT-S39 management software.
The AT-S39 softw are has a menu interface that makes it very easy to use,
and a special interface for manag ing a sw itch w ith a web b rowser.
There are four different w ays to access the mana gement softw are on an
AT-8000 Series switch. In this guide, these met hods a re referred to as
management sessions. They are:
Local Manag ement Session
Telnet Manag ement Session
Web Brow ser Management Session
SNMP Management Session
The fo llow ing sect ions in this chapt er briefly describe each type of
manag ement session.

Local Management Session
You ca n establish a local management session with an AT-8000 Series
switch by connecting a terminal or a PC with a terminal emulatorprogram to the RS232 Terminal port on the front pa nel of the switch,
using a st raight -throug h RS-232 cable. This type of management session
is referred to as localbecause you must be physically close to theswitch, such a s in the w iring closet w here the switch is located.
Once the session is started, a menu is displayed and you can make
selections to configure and monitor the switch. You can configure all of
a sw itchs operating parameters from a local mana gement session.
NoteFor instructions on starting a local management session, refer to
Starting a Local Management Sessionon pag e 30.

Telnet Management Session
Any manag ement workstat ion on your network tha t ha s the Telnet
applicat ion proto col can be used to manage an AT-8000 Series switch.
This type of management session is referred to in th is guide as a remote
manag ement session because you do not ha ve to be in the wiring closet
where the switch you want to manag e is located. You can mana ge theswitch from any workstat ion on t he netw ork tha t has the application
protocol.
To estab lish a Telnet management session w ith a switch, there must be
at least one AT-8000 Series switch on the subnet that has been assigned
an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Only one sw itch in a subnet needs tohave a n IP address. Once you have estab lished a Telnet manag ement
session w ith the sw itch that ha s an IP address, you can use the enhanced
sta cking fea ture of the AT-S39 softw are to access all other AT-8000
Series switches in the same subnet .
NoteFor further information on enhanced stacking , refer to EnhancedStacking Overviewon pag e 58.
NoteFor instructions on how to start a Telnet management session, refer
to Starting a Telnet Management Sessionon pag e 34.
A Telnet ma nagement session gives you complete access to a ll of a
switchs operat ing pa rameters. You can perform nearly all the same
functions from a Telnet manag ement session as you can from a local
manag ement session.

Web Browser Management Session
You can also use a w eb b rowser to mana ge a switch. This too is referred
to a s remote ma nagement, just like a Telnet ma nagement session. Youcan mana ge a switch from any workstation on your network that has a
web browser.
NoteFor instructions on starting this type of mana gement session, refer

SNMP Management Session
Another way to remotely manag e the switch is with an SNMP
manag ement program. A familiarity w ith Mana gement Information Base(MIB) ob jects is necessary for this type of management.
The AT-S39 software supports the following MIBs:
SNMP MIB-II (RFC 1213)
Bridge MIB (RFC 1493)
Interface Group MIB (RFC 1573)
Ethernet MIB (RFC 1643)
Remote Network MIB (RFC 1757)
Allied Telesyn managed switch MIB
You must do wnload the Allied Telesyn managed switch MIB
(at istackinfo.mib and at iswitch.mib) file from the Allied Telesyn w eb site
and compile the file with your SNMP prog ram. For instructions, refer to
your SNMP mana gement documenta tion.
NoteSNMP manag ement does not utilize the enhanced stacking feature.
Conseq uently, you must assign an IP address to each switch to be
mana ged w ith an SNMP prog ram.

Management Access Levels
There a re two levels of management access on an AT-8000 Series switch:
Mana ger and Operator. When you log in as a Manag er, you can view andconfigure a ll of a switchs operating parameters. When you log in as an
Operator, you can only view the operat ing parameters; you canno t
change any values.
You log in as a ma nag er or an operator by entering the a ppropriat e
password when you sta rt an AT-S39 mana gement session. To log in as a
manag er, type manageras the login and friendas the pa ssword. The
default user name for operator is operatorand the password is also
operator. Both log in and password a re case-sensitive.

Local Management Session
On the front panel of the sw itch is a port lab elled RS232 Terminal Port.
You use this port to estab lish a local mana gement session w ith theswitchs AT-S39 management software.
A local manag ement session is so named because you must be close tothe switch, usually within a few meters, to sta rt this type of manag ement
session. This typically means tha t you must be in the w iring closet w here
the sw itch is located.
A switch does not need an IP address to be mana ged from a local
manag ement session. You can start a local management session a t any
time on any AT-8000 Series switch in your netw ork. Running a local
manag ement session does not interfere with the flow of Ethernet trafficthrough the unit.
Starting a local management session on a switch that has been
configured a s a Master switch of an enhanced stack allow s you tomanag e all the switches in the subnet from the same local manag ement
session. You do not have to start a separate local manag ement session
for each sw itch. This can simplify netw ork management .
Starting a local manag ement session on a switch that is not pa rt of a n
enhanced stack or that is a slave switch in an enhanced stack allow s you
to manag e just tha t switch.

auoma tically determines the speed of t he local terminal. Activate
this feat ure by pressing the Return or Enter key twice on your
keyboa rd when you initially sta rt the local interface or w ithin five
seconds a fter powering on or resetting the sw itch. The switch
responds by determining the speed of the terminal andautoma tically configuring the speed of the RS232 Terminal Port
accordingly. Otherwise, the switch uses a default ba ud rate of 9600
bits per second (bps). The sw itch maintains the terminal port speed
until the system is aga in powered on o r reset. The rang e of the port s
ba ud ra te is 1200 to 115200 bps.
NoteThe port sett ings are for a DEC VT100 or ANSI termina l, or an

EnhancedStacking
When you start a local manag ement session on a switch tha t has been
designa ted as the Master switch of an enhanced stack, you can manag e
all the switches in the same subnet from the same manag ement session.
This can save you the t ime and trouble of having to sta rt a separate local
manag ement session each t ime you wa nt to manage a switch in your
netw ork. It can a lso save you from having to g o to the d ifferent w iring
closets w here the switches are located.
For information on enhanced stacking and how to manag e different
switches from the same ma nag ement session, refer to Chapter 4,Enhanced Stackingon pag e 57.
Quitting from aLocal Session
To q uit a local session, return to the Main Menu and type Qfor Quit.
You should always exit from a manag ement session w hen you are
finished manag ing a sw itch. This can prevent unauthorized individuals
from making cha nges to a switchs configuration should you leave your
manag ement station unatt ended.
NoteYou cannot operate bo th a local manag ement session and a Telnet
manag ement session on the sa me switch simultaneously. Failure to
properly exit from a local or Telnet ma nagement session ma y block
future mana gement sessions.

Telnet Management Session
You can use the Telnet applicat ion protocol from a worksta tion on your
network to manag e an AT-8000 Series sw itch. This type of management
is referred to as remote manag ement because you do not ha ve to be
physically close to the switch to sta rt the session, such as w ith a local
manag ement session. Any workstat ion on your network tha t ha s theapplication protocol can be used to ma nag e the sw itch.
In terms of functionally, there are almost no d ifferences between
managing a switch loca lly throug h the RS232 Terminal Port and
remotely with the Telnet applicat ion protocol. You see the same menu
selections and ha ve nearly the same manag ement capa bilities.
Starting a Telnet mana gement session requires tha t there be a t least one
AT-8000 Series switch on your network that has an IP address. The sw itch
with the IP address is referred to as the master switch. Once you ha vestarted a Telnet mana gement session on t he master switch, you w ill
have management access to a ll the other AT-8000 Series switches thatreside in the same subnet .
Note
NoteFor ba ckground information on enhanced stacking , refer to
Enhanced Stacking Overviewon page 58.
Starting a TelnetManagement
Session
To start a Telnet ma nagement session, specify the IP add ress of the
master switch o f the enhanced stack in the Telnet applicat ion protocol
and enter the mana gement software password w hen prompted. The
default password for manager access is friend. The default passw ordfor operator access is operator. Log ins and pa sswords are case-
sensitive. For information on the tw o access levels, refer to
Management Access Levelson pag e 25.(For instructions on how tochange a password, refer to Configuring the Management Passwordson pag e 48.)
The Main Menu of a Telnet ma nagement session is the same menu tha t
you see in a local management session, shown in Figure 2 on pa ge 32.
Nearly a ll the functions from a local management session a re availab le to
you from a Telnet manag ement session.

When Does a Switch Need an IP Address?
One of the t asks to building or expand ing a network is deciding w hich of
the ma nag ed sw itches need to be assigned unique IP addresses. The
rule used to be that a ma nag ed switch needed an IP address if you
wanted to mana ge it remotely, such as w ith the Telnet application
protocol. How ever, if a network conta ined a lot of manag ed switches, having to a ssign each one an IP address wa s often cumbersome and
time consuming. It was also often difficult keeping track of a ll the IP
addresses.
The enhanced sta cking fea ture o f the AT-8000 Series sw itch simplifies a ll
this. With enhanced stacking, you need assign an IP address to only oneAT-8000 Series sw itch in each sub net in your network. The switch w ith
the IP ad dress is referred to as the Master switch of the subnetw ork. All
switches in the same subnet share the IP address.
Starting a local or remote manag ement session on the Master switch
automat ically gives you complete management access to all the otherswitches in the same subnet .
This feature has tw o primary benefits. First, it helps reduce the number
of IP ad dresses you ha ve to assign to your network devices. Second, it
allow s you to configure multiple switches through the same local or
remote manag ement session.
If your netw ork consists of multiple subnets, you must a ssign a unique IP
address to at least one sw itch in each subnet . The switch w ith the IP
