Inserting the SIM card, microSD™ card, and batteryWhen you register with a service provider, you receiveaSubscriberIdentityModule(SIM)card.YourphonemusthaveaSIMcardinordertomakecalls.TheSIMcardisacomputerchipthat contains your phone number, phonebook information,andserviceproviderinformation.Handleitwithcareanddonotbenditorexposeittostaticelectricityordirt.Besurethepowerto your phone is off before you insert your SIM card.
The SIM card and the microSD™cardslotsaresituatedunderneaththebattery.
1. Slidethecoverinthedirectionofthearrow.Liftandsetitaside.
2. InserttheSIMcardandslideitintotheholderuntilitfits.ThegoldcontactsoftheSIMcardshouldfacedown and the notched edgeshouldbeonthetopleftcorner.

3. InsertthemicroSD™ cardandslideitintotheholderuntilitfits.Thegoldcontactsofthecardshouldfacedown with the notched edgeontheleftside.
4. Placethebatteryinto the battery compartment noting thecorrectpolarity.Carefullypressdownthebatteryuntilitsnapsinplace.
5. Replacethebackcover,slidingitupwarduntilitsnapsinplace.
CAUtION:
• Useonlythebatteryrecommendedbythemanufacturer.Usinganincompatiblebatterywiththephonemaycauseriskofanexplosion.
• Dispose of the used batteries according to the manufacturer’sinstructions,oraskyourlocalauthoritiesforassistance.
Removing the SIM card, microSD™ card, and battery
1. Slidethecoverinthedirectionofthearrow.Liftandsetitaside.
2. Pulltheprotrudingfilmontopofthebattery in the direction of the arrow,thencarefullyliftthebatteryoutofitscompartment.
NOte:Becarefulwhenusingtheprotrudingfilmonthebattery.Incorrectusagemaydamage/teartheprotrudingfilm
3. UseyourfingertiptoslidetheSIMcardoutoftheholderinthe direction of the arrow.
4. Refertostep3to remove the microSD™card.

1. Connectthechargerplugtoapoweroutlet.
2. Connectthechargertothe socket at the bottom ofthephone.Theconnectorcanonlybeinsertedoneway.
Charging the batteryIttakesafewhourstofullychargeabatteryforthefirsttime.Forbestbatteryperformance,allowthebatterytochargeanddischargecompletelythefirstfewtimesyouuseit.
In chargingWhen the phone is turned on, the animation on theupperrightcornerofthescreenwillindicatethechargingprogress.Thephoneisworkablewhen the battery is charged, but it may take twicethetimetofullychargethebattery.
Whenthephoneisturnedoff,theanimationwillappear on the screen to indicate the charging progress.Thephonecanbeturnedonforusewhenthebatteryischarged.
Low battery indicatorsThe battery indicator on the upper right corner of the screen indicates how much charge remainsinthebattery.Whenthebatteryislow,thephonewillbeepandthemessage“batterylow”willappearonthescreen.NOte:Ifthebatteryhasbeendeeplydischarged,itmaytakethebatterylevelindicatorseveralminutestodisplay.

untilthephoneshutsdown.NOte:IfyousetanalarmusingtheOrganizermenu,thenturnoffthephone,thephonewillturnitselfonwhenthealarmisactivated.Afteryoudisablethealarm,thephonepromptsyouifyouwanttokeepthephoneturnedonoroff.SeetheOrganizersectionfordetailsaboutsettinganalarm.

Standby modeWhen your phone is on, but not in use, it is in standbymode.Duringstandbymode,theupperpartofthedisplayscreenshowsvariousicons.
Thetimeanddatearedisplayedatthelowercenterofthescreen.Underthedateandtimeare MenuontheleftcornerandNames on the rightcorner.Presstheleftsoftkey to view the main menu, and the right soft key to view thephonebook.

Using the menuTo view the main menu, go to standby mode, thenpresstheleftsoftkey orenterkey.Followthesetipstonavigatethroughthemenuandmenuoptions.

Choosing text entry methodsFrom any text entry screen, such as a text messagewindow,selectOptions > Input Method.
ABC input
ABCinputenablesyoutoenterindividuallettersonebyone.ThisisidealforaddingaphonebookentryorenteringaWAPaddress.When you press a key, the characters assigned tothekeyappearonthescreen.Pressthekeyrepeatedlytoscrollthroughthesecharacters.Pauseforamomentandtheselectedletterappearsonthescreen.Forpractice,trycreatingatextmessage(SMS)asfollows:
From the menu, go to Messages > SMS > Write Message.Beforeenteringtext,press Options > Input Method, andselectABC Input.
Toenterthewords“myphone”intothetextentryarea,followthesesteps:

Smart Abc
Smart Abc is a predictive text entry method, whichusesabuilt-indictionarytopredictthewordyouaretyping.Youcanchoosethe
correctwordbypressingthekeysrepetitivelyandscrollingthroughthewordssuggestedbythephone.Byreducingthenumberofkeystrokes,thesmartAbchelpssomeuserstotypemessagesmorequickly.
Wheneveryoupressakey,alistofpossiblecharacters or character combinations is created.Toentertext,usetheupanddownnavigationkeystofindthecharactercombinationyouwant.Presstherightnavigationkeyor#keytoproceedenteringthenextcharacter.Ifyoumakeamistake,pressClear.
Hereisanexampleofhowtoentertheword“baby”usingsmarttextentry.
1. Press2.Theletteraappearsonthescreen.

Numeric text entry
Numerictextentryallowsyoutocreateatextmessagecomposedofnumbers.Tousethismethod,selectOptions > Input Method > Numeric.Nowyoucandirectlyinputthenumbersusingthekeypad.
Symbols text entry
With this method, you can enter various types ofsymbols.SelectOptions > Input Method > Insert Symbols.Alistofsymbolsisdisplayed.UsethenavigationkeystoselectthedesiredsymbolandpressOKwhendone.
Switch text input method
SelectOptions > Input Method,orlongpress* keyinfullscreeneditor.
TransferringfilestoacomputerConnectthemobilephonetoacomputerusingthesuppliedUSBcable.TheMassStoragewindowappears.PressOK tocontinue.Thephoneshutsdown.
The phone memory appears on your computer asaremovabledisk.IfthemicroSD™ card is installedinthephone,italsoappearsonthecomputerasaremovabledisk.
Youcantransferfilesbetweenthecomputerandthephoneusingafileviewer,suchasWindows®ExplorerorMyDocuments.
Forincreasedfunctionality,includingtoolsforcreating and editing messages, images, music, and more, use the Handset Manager software includedinyourpackage.
For more information, refer to the Handset Managersectionofthisuserguide.
UpgradingthefirmwareToupgradethefirmwareversion:
1. TurnoffthehandsetanddisconnecttheUSBcable.
2. VisittheASUSwebsite(www.asus.com)forthelatestfirmwareversion.In the General Download section, clickSearch.Alistofdownloaditemsappears.DownloadthefirmwaretoyourPC.Executethefile,thenclickUpgrade.
3. PlugoneendoftheUSBcabletothePC.Press keyonthehandset,thenplugtheotherendofthecabletothemini-USBsocketonthehandset.TheupgradeprogramwillautomaticallydetecttheCOMportandexecuteitself.
4. Whenthemessage“Burningfinished”appears,clickexit.
