THURSDAY 3 JANUARY
Conchaband
Conchaband offer a fresh take on the space between inspired song writing and improvised instrumental work. Blending vocals, harp, flute, guitar and percussion, they join the dots between folk, Arabic, Afro-Latin and classical influences.
THURSDAY 7 FEBRUARY
Kate RoyalBorn in London Kate is one of the UK’s most sought after
sopranos. She has sung leading roles at The Royal Opera House, The Metropolitan New York, Paris Opera and Glyndebourne. Kate will be performing a selection of songs and arias by Mozart, Handel and Strauss.
THURSDAY 7 MARCH
St Bartholomew’s Piano Quartet
St Bartholomew’s Piano Quartet is a newly formed
ensemble made from pure home-grown talent here in Sydenham. Tom Norris and Alastair Blayden play regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as being leading chamber musicians. Ellie Norris has appeared regularly at the Wigmore Hall and at Kings Place. Eleanor Meynell performs recitals and concertos in the UK and has won many prizes and awards. They will play Schumann’s Piano Quartet Op.47 in Eb alongside other smaller works by Shostakovitch and Mendelssohn.
THURSDAY 4 APRIL
Ahmed Dickinson and Eduardo Martin
When Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas first heard the music of fellow countryman Eduardo Martín he felt euphoric. Martín’s style has an expansive sense of freedom that taps into pre Columbus traditions, jazz, flamenco, pop, Afro and traditional Cuban. Tonight the two play together, a compilation of some of Eduardo’s most alluring works for two guitars, where rock merges
with son montunos; old Yoruba chants, feel-good rumbas, funk-boleros, new age tunes and cinematic pieces sit alongside Cuban tumbaos with slap bass.
THURSDAY 2 MAY
Sorolla Piano TrioThe Singapore-born English pianist, Caroline Palmer, studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Edith Vogel and, later, continued
her studies with Peter Wallfisch and Hans Keller.
Since then Caroline has established a reputation as a chamber musician and soloist. Tonight she is joined by Ionel Manciu and Sebastian Kolin to perform works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
THURSDAY 6 JUNE
Three Cane Whale
Three Cane Whale is a multi-instrumental acoustic trio, influenced
by folk, minimalism and chamber music. The trio consists of Alex Vann (mandolin, bowed psaltery, music box, zither and tenor banjo), Pete Judge (trumpet, harmonium, lyre, glockenspiel and dulcitone) and Paul Bradley (acoustic guitar and miniature harp).
THURSDAY 4 JULY
Torrin WilliamsTorrin performed as String Category Finalist in BBC Young
Musician of the Year 2018 and made his debut recital at Wigmore Hall in 2017. At the age of 13 he was winner of the Concerto Class in the Croydon Music Festival, having been awarded the West Sussex Guitar Festival Bursary the year before. Since 2015, he has been leader of the National Youth Guitar Ensemble. We’re delighted to welcome back this intensely musical and charismatic young artist.
THURSDAY 5 SEPTEMBER
Julian Empett and Nicholas Ansdell Evans
Nicholas works as a freelance repetiteur or assistant conductor
at the Royal Opera House,
Hallé, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Opera Rara. He is also a regular member of the music staff at English National Opera.
Tonight he is joined by bass baritone Julian Empett, a Lay Vicar at Westminster Abbey and much in demand as an oratorio soloist and consort singer. They present a varied recital of song, which includes the first performance of one of Nicholas’s compositions.
THURSDAY 3 OCTOBER
The FB Pocket Orchestra
The FB Pocket Orchestra was formed in 2012 by Paul Stevenson, Jenny Russell and Ollie Corbin after a cancelled recording project created some free studio time. They feel that much of the detail and inherent beauty of this repertoire lies in the subtle interaction of more traditional instruments and they’ve broadened their instrumental scope to include banjo, cornet, harmonica, accordion, tuba, clarinet and violin.
THURSDAY 7 NOVEMBER
Alexander Karpeyev
Recently featured as ‘One to watch’ in International Piano magazine, Alexpander Karpeyev is a Russian pianist resident in the UK. He is the winner of the Dudley International Piano Competition as well as the Norah Sande Award and the holder of a Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians. His latest project is a recording of ‘Composers at the Savile Club‘ (2019) featuring works by Elgar, Parry, Stanford, Howells and Walton.
THURSDAY 5 DECEMBER
Celtic Winter Music with Mick Sands, Ed Barret and Brendan McAuley
We present another evening of traditional music, song and
dance on fiddle, viola, flute, pipes, guitar, whistle etc. Music to warm a December evening, to help us travel into the past and the future while staying in the present and perhaps to prepare for Christmas.
