Laura Inman, conductor

Laura Inman is an interim associate professor of music at ASU whereshe conducts the ASU Choral Union. Dr. Inman completed hereDMA in Conducting at ASU in May 2009 where she has served asconductor of ASU's Women's Chorus and as an assistant conductorfor the ASU Concert Choir, University Choir, the Lyric OperaTheatre, and the Herberger Singers, ASU's vocal jazz ensemble.

As a professional soprano, she has sung with Kentucky Opera, andcurrently sings as a soprano soloist with the "American Bach" singersin their Cantata series. Inman is in her eighth season as a soprano inthe Grammy award winning Phoenix Chorale. She appeared on two ofthe grammy-award winning discs: Gretchaninoff Passion Week and ASpotless Rose, which won Best Small Ensemble Performance, and onenominated disc Rheinberger: Sacred Choral Works. They recentlyperformed in Lincoln Center and most recently in Inchon SouthKorea. She also serves as the Community Engagement Coordinator.

She received her undergraduate degree in Music Education, with anemphasis on vocal performance, from the University of Louisville. Asa singer, Laura has sung with the Kentucky Opera and currently is asoprano soloist with the American Bach Series. She has served twoyears as the Assistant Director of the Phoenix Symphony Chorus andis currently on faculty at Veritas Preparatory Academy in Phoenix,where she is also the Dean of Girls. Inman's choirs have been invitedto sing in the Fiesta Bowl 2009 and will also be singing the CoronationMass in NYC's Carnegie Hall in April.

A member of Southwest Liederkranz, she recently participated intwo national symposiums—working directly with Americancomposers Kirke Mechem and Morten Lauridsen —on preparation andinterpretation of their choral works for both the concert and operaticstage. Dr. Inman is a member of the National Association of Teachersof Singing, Chorus America, the National Recording Academy, andSouthwest Liederkranz.

Benjamin Levy

Ben Levy is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Arizona StateUniversity, specializing in contemporary music. He holds a Ph.D.from the University of Maryland where he received the Davis Awardfor Outstanding Graduate Research and a Dean's Dissertation

Fellowship. He holds a bachelor's degree in Music and Classics fromWashington University in St. Louis, where he received the AntoinetteFrances Dames Award in Music and the Eugene Tavenner Award forExcellence in the Study of Classics.

Dr. Levy has presented his research on Gyorgy Ligeti atconferences in the United States and Canada, and his dissertation, "TheElectronic Works of Gyärgy Ligeti and their Influence on his Later Style"was supported with the help of a grant from the Paul SacherFoundation in Basel, Switzerland. He is currently continuing hisresearch on Ligeti, working towards a book on the composer's radicalchange in style during the 1950's and 60's. This Fall he will presentpart of his research at the joint conference of the AmericanMusicological Society and the Society for Music Theory in Nashvilleand also at the 8th Congress of the Gesellschaft fill- Musiktheorie, inGraz, Austria.

His other interests include strategies for the analysis of timbre, theinfluence of non-Western music on contemporary composers(especially Balinese gamelan and gender wayang, which he has playedfor a number of years), and the relationships between music and text.Before arriving at ASU he served on the faculties of TowsonUniversity, the University of Maryland, and the PeabodyConservatory of Music.

Devon Howard

Devon Howard was born in Colorado in 1981. He began pianostudies at the age of eight and organ at the age of thirteen. In 1999,Devon studied for one year with Donald Sutherland at the PeabodyConservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, after which hetransfered to Southern Adventist University in Collegedale,Tennessee. In 2003, he completed a Bachelor's Degree in OrganPerformance under the tutelage of Prof. Judy Glass. Devon spent the2005-2006 academic year studying organ performance and techniquewith Prof. Aart Bergwerff at Codarts Conservatorium in Rotterdam,The Netherlands as a Fulbright Scholar. The following year, he stayedin The Netherlands to pursue independent study with Sietze de Vriesin improvisation on the historic organs of the Groningen provence.Currently, Devon is a doctoral candidate under Dr. Kimberly Marshallat Arizona State University where he is her Teaching Assistant. Devonis also the organist for Victory Lutheran Church in Mesa, Arizona.

In addition to the organ, Devon enjoys choral music. He hasparticipated in several concert choirs including one year as a tenor inthe Roder Jongenskoor (Roden Boys Choir), a professional concertchoir in the north of The Netherlands. In 2003 he founded ScholaCantorum, a university project choir devoted to Renaissance andBaroque choral music, which he trained and directed until leaving forThe Netherlands. Currently he sings with ASU's Early MusicChamber Choir and is the Vice-President of the Phoenix Early MusicSociety.

Jeremy Peterman

Collaborative pianist Jeremy Peterman is active in the Valley as bothvocal coach and performer. He earned undergraduate degrees inFrench and Piano Performance from the University of North Carolinaat Chapel Hill, and a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Pianofrom Arizona State University. At UNC-Chapel Hill, he served asrehearsal pianist for Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro in 2005; the followingyear he led both as rehearsal pianist and conductor for the university'sproduction of Carlisle Floyd's The Sojourner and Mollie Sinclair. AtArizona State University, he has played for the Lyric Opera Theater'sproductions of Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, Torroba's Luisa Fernanda,Rossini's Cenerentola, and for a student production of Argento's operaMiss Havisham's Wedding Night.

In the community, Jeremy has worked with Arizona Opera fornumerous outreach and promotional recitals, as well as chorus pianistfor their recent productions of Rigoletto and The Mikado. He has alsoplayed under the baton of Michael Christie of Phoenix Symphony asrehearsal pianist for John Adams' On the Transmigration of Souls andOsvaldo Golijov's Ainadamar. He was hired in November 2009 toedit and run Phoenix Opera's Carmen supertitles. He was alsorehearsal pianist and supertitles creator for their 2010 production ofMadama Butterfly. He similarly creates and runs all supertitles for theLyric Opera Theater productions at ASU.

At Arizona State University, Jeremy is currently the pianist forthree choirs and is a candidate for a Doctorate of Musical Arts inCollaborative Piano.

ASU Choral Union ASU CHORALUNION

Founded in the 1950s, the ASU Choral Union in the HerbergerInstitute School of Music is devoted to singing the masterworks forlarge chorus and orchestra. Members are auditioned volunteer singersfrom the ASU community, including students, faculty, staff andresidents of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Many of the members areprofessionally trained and most have had extensive choral experience.Weekly rehearsals take place from August through April.

The Choral Union sings several times each season with the ASUSymphony Orchestra, including the annual Holiday Concert, one ofASU's most beloved musical traditions. The group has sung with thePhoenix Symphony and has toured in Mexico, England, Australia andItaly. Recent performances have included works Prokofiev's AlexanderNevsky, Bloch's Sacred Service, Verdi's Requiem, Mendelssohn'sElijah, and Nelson's Te Deum.
