SPECIFICATION FOR TEST METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF SUSCEPTIBILITY TO STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IN COPPER ALLOYS USING AN AMMONIA VAPOR TEST SB-858M (Identical with ASTM Specication B 858M-95) 1. Scope 1.1  This test method describes a procedure that may be used to deter mine the presence of resid ual stresse s which may lead to stress corrosion cracking of wrought copper alloy products. This test method uses an ammonia atmosphere to simulate service conditions under which stress corr osion cracking may occu r. 1.2  Thi s tes t met hod is onl y sui table for produ cts fab ric ated fr om cop per alloys tha t are kno wn to be sus cep tibl e to stress cor ros ion cra cki ng in ammoni a vapor atmospheres. It is intended to create an environ- mental condition of reproducible severity, but it is well known that the critical step in the cracking mechanism is the development of an environment in the condensate lm that occ urs on the surfa ce of the test spe cimen, whi ch is ric h in copper complex ions. 1.3  Thi s test met hod is a con ver sion of ISO 695 7, “Copper Alloys — Ammonia Test for Stress Corrosion Resistance.” 1.4  The severi ty of thi s tes t met hod depen ds upo n the pH of the corr os ive solutio n.     1. Scope

    1.1 This test method describes a procedure that maybe used to determine the presence of residual stresseswhich may lead to stress corrosion cracking of wroughtcopper alloy products. This test method uses an ammoniaatmosphere to simulate service conditions under whichstress corrosion cracking may occur.

    1.2 This test method is only suitable for productsfabricated from copper alloys that are known to besusceptible to stress corrosion cracking in ammoniavapor atmospheres. It is intended to create an environ-mental condition of reproducible severity, but it is wellknown that the critical step in the cracking mechanismis the development of an environment in the condensatefilm that occurs on the surface of the test specimen,which is rich in copper complex ions.

    1.3 This test method is a conversion of ISO 6957,Copper Alloys Ammonia Test for Stress CorrosionResistance.

    1.4 The severity of this test method depends uponthe pH of the corrosive solution. In Annex A1 aregiven four different atmospheres to which the productmay be exposed, and the appropriate pH of the solutionto be used for the test, depending on the risk levelassociated with the intended application.

    1.4.1 The appropriate pH value for the test shallbe specified in the product specification, or as perestablished agreement between the supplier and pur-

    chaser, with respect to the alloy and its intendedapplication.

    4. Summary of Test Method

    4.1 The prepared test specimen is placed in a closedcontainer and exposed to ammonia vapor at ambienttemperature for 24 h. Upon removal from the testatmosphere, the test specimen is examined for thepresence of cracks.

    5. Significance and Use

    5.1 This test method is an accelerated test to determineif a copper alloy product in a specific stress conditionwill be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking whenexposed to a particular atmospheric condition duringservice with the appropriate risk level see AnnexA1. This test method is generally intended to determineif a copper alloy product will crack because of internalstresses when subjected to the test, and is not intendedfor testing assemblies under applied stress. If used forthis purpose it shall be for information only and nota cause for rejection of the assembly, its componentparts, or the original mill product.

    6. Reagents and Materials

    6.1 Purity of Reagents Reagent grade chemicalsshall be used in all tests. Unless otherwise indicated,it is intended that all reagents conform to the specifica-tions of the Committee on Analytical Reagents of theAmerican Chemical Society where such specificationsare available. Other grades may be used, provided itis first ascertained that the reagent is of sufficientlyhigh purity to permit its use without lessening theaccuracy of the determination.

    6.2 Purity of Water Unless otherwise indicated,references to water shall be understood to mean reagentwater as defined by Type IV or better, of SpecificationD 1193.

    6.3 Ammonium Chloride Solution (4N) Dissolve107 g of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) in water anddilute to 500 mL. Store the solution in a closed vessel.

    6.4 Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), 3035% technicalgrade. CAUTION Hydrogen peroxide in high con-centrations can cause severe skin burns.

    6.5 Sodium Hydroxide Solution (300500 g/L) Dissolve 300500 g of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) intowater and dilute to 1 L. Warning Sodium hydroxidecan cause chemical burns to the skin and eyes. Useof proper safety equipment is advised.

    6.6 A clean organic solvent or hot alkaline solution.

    6.7 Sulfuric Acid Solution (50 mL/L) Slowly add50 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) into waterand dilute to 1 L.

    7. Apparatus

    7.1 pH-meter;

    7.2 closed vessel, such as a desiccator; and

    7.3 equipment for examining test pieces at 10 to15 magnification.

    8. Test Media

    8.1 Slowly add sodium hydroxide solution to ammo-nium chloride solution to give a test solution with apH-value appropriate to the intended application (seeAnnex A1). Maintain the solution at ambient tempera-ture and dilute with DI water up to a volume of 1 L.Check the pH-value with the pH meter after dilution.Prepare the solution preferably in a fume hood in alaboratory using appropriate safe laboratory proceduresand store it in a closed vessel. Before use, check thepH-value again, and adjust if necessary.

    8.1.1 In the closed test vessel, the ratio of surfacearea of test solution to air volume of the vessel abovethe solution shall be a minimum of 20 cm2/L.

    8.2 The pickling solution for cleaning test piecesbefore and after testing shall be 5% sulfuric acid. Ifnecessary, for cleaning test pieces after testing, a smallamount of hydrogen peroxide solution may be addedto the pickling solution (for example, 20 to 30 mLof hydrogen peroxide solution per liter of picklingsolution).

    9. Test Specimen Preparation

    9.1 The test specimen shall be prescribed in thematerial specification for the product or part beingtested. In the event that a test specimen size is notprescribed in a given rod, wire, or tube specification,a full cross section having a minimum length of 152mm shall be tested.

    9.2 The presence of burrs on the test specimen maycontribute to acceleration of stress corrosion crackingif not removed prior to the ammonia vapor test. Theburrs shall be removed by fine file or abrasive paperto facilitate this test.

    9.3 Degrease the test specimen using the clean organicsolvent or alkaline solution.

    9.4 After degreasing, clean the test piece in thepickling solution and immediately thereafter thoroughlyrinse it, first in cold running water, then in hot water,and finally, completely dry it in a stream of warm air.

    10. Test Procedure

    10.1 Allow the dry test piece to reach the exposuretemperature specified below, and transfer it immediatelyto the closed vessel (see 7.2) at the same temperature,and containing the freshly prepared test solution at thespecified pH-value (see 8.1).

    10.1.1 Suspend (or place) the test piece in sucha way that the ammonia vapor has free access to allsurfaces, not less than 50 mm above the test solutionsurface.

    10.1.1.1 When placed on a porcelain supportwithin the test vessel, the region of the test piecewithin 5 mm of the support shall be disregarded wheninspecting for cracks.

    10.1.1.2 The test piece shall be placed no lessthan 10 mm from the inside walls of the test vessel.

    10.1.1.3 When more than one test piece is placedin the vessel, the test pieces shall be no less than 10mm apart.

    10.2 The volume of the test solution shall be atleast 200 mL per square decimeter of test piece surface.The exposure temperature shall be between 20C and30C and shall be kept constant to within 61C duringthe test. In case of dispute, the temperature shall bekept at 25C 6 1C.

    10.3 The exposure time shall be 24 h.10.4 After exposure, remove the test piece from the

    closed vessel and immediately clean it in picklingsolution for a few minutes at ambient tmperature (below40C), or until the surfaces of the test piece aresufficiently clean from corrosion products to allowobservation of possible cracks. After rinsing in waterand drying in warm air, examine the surface of thetest piece for cracks at a magnification of 10 to 15.

    10.5 Before inspection, deform the test piece slightlyby bending or flattening to open up fine cracks tomake them more easily observable.

    10.6 Metallographic examination may be used todetermine the metallurgical nature of any observedcracks.

    11. Test Report

    11.1 The test report shall contain the followinginformation:

    11.1.1 sample identification;

    11.1.2 reference to the test method used;

    11.1.3 the pH-value used for the solution producingthe ammoniacal atmosphere;

    11.1.4 the number of replicate test pieces tested;

    11.1.5 the test results: cracks or no cracks (asrequired in the appropriate product specification);

    11.1.6 any other features of the material notedduring the determination; and

    11.1.7 the date of the test.

    12. Precision and Bias

    12.1 No statement is made about the precision orbias of this test method since the procedure is directedat a subjective visual interpretation of condition of thespecimen and its relation to an applicable productspecification.

    X1. RATIONALE (COMMENTARY)X1.1 This standard was developed to address the

    demand for a test method for determination of thepresence of residual stresses in copper alloy productswhich may lead to stress corrosion cracking other thanthe mercurous nitrate test, Test Method B 154. Thistest method is a conversion of ISO 6957 CopperAlloys Ammonia Test for Stress Corrosion Resist-ance. Research work performed by Mattsson, et al.,validates the technical integrity of the test method.

    X1.2 This test method does not attempt to comparethe effectiveness of the test to other test methods,including the mercurous nitrate test, Test Method B154, nor does it attempt to quantify its relative effective-ness on various copper alloy products. These issuesmust be addressed on a case by case basis, since suchproducts and tests are specific for their respectiverequirements and applications.
