Come back to the ED or see your family doctor Check DANGER SIGNS BEST CARE BUNDLE PATIENT INFORMATION ASTHMA PATIENT INFORMATION DANGER SIGNS - Call an ambulan nce & come to the Emergency Department If you: • are breathing fast or laboured • loose consciousness • do not respond normally • are too tired to breathe normally • can only speak a few words at a time • are agitated and not able to calm down • are too breathless to speak full sentences • do not get any relief from using your inhaler • are needing your inhaler more than every 2hrs DIAL 11 Give 10 puffs of the blue inhaler eve 11 for an AMBULANCE ery 20 minutes as needed, until the ambulance arrives Important: Make sure that your family knows the danger signs If you get in trouble they need to know how to ring an ambulance WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET HOME In the next hours/days: use the signs below to decide how bad your asthma is, then follow the instructions below the box where you think you are. When to go to the family doctor: It is important that you see your GP for a review within the next week even if you do get better. It will be a chance for you to talk with your GP about your long term asthma management As your breathing improves you will need your inhaler less and less. When to see your family doctor sooner: If you are still wheezy two days after leaving the hospital If you have been needing the blue inhaler every 4 hours or more often for two consecutive days If your sleep is disturbed because of your Asthma 7.7.200 C

Asthmaisachronicillness.Thepatientgetsrecurrentattacksofbreathlessness(shortnessofbreath)andwheezing.Somepatientshavemildsymptoms,othercanbesevereofevenlifethreatening..

WhathappensduringanAsthmaattack?

Theairwaywallswells,themusclesintheairwaywalltighten,andthereisanincreaseinmucousintheairway.

Wheezingisamusicalwhistlingsoundwithbreathing,usuallyasyoubreatheout.Itcomesfromthechest–notthenoseorthroat.

INHALERS

Relievers:Yourblueinhalerisareliever.Itisusedduringawheezyepisode.Itworksbyrelaxingtightenedairwaymuscles.Thishelpstoreducewheezeandrelievebreathingdifficulty.(IfyouhaveaSymbicortSMARTturbuhaler,youcanusethisasarelieverwhenwheezy)

Preventers:Theseworkbyreducingtheswellingintheairwaywall.Thatmeanstheycanhelppreventwheezyepisodesfromhappening.Theyneedtobetakenregularlytobeeffective.

Therearemanydifferenttypes/coloursofinhalers.Whenyouaretakingapreveter,youmightalsobeprescribedareliver,butifyouaretakingsymbicortSMART,youwillhaveonlyoneinhaler.

WhatisSymbicortSMART:YourdoctororClinicalNurseSpecialistwilldecideifSymbicortSMARTisforyou.ThisisamedicationthatcontainsBOTHthepreventerandrelieverinoneinhaler.Itisapreventer,thatyoucanalsousewhenyouhaveawheezyepisode.

Thatmeansthetreatmentissimpler,butitisonlyrightforcertainpatients.Pleasemakesurethatyoureadthepackageinsertcompletely.Ifyouneedit,youcantakeupto6extradosesperday.Ifyoufeelthatyouneedmorethanthat-itisasignthatyouneedtoseeadoctorimmediately.

• Situpright.Shaketheinhaler• Placetheinhalerinthespacerdevice• Placethespacermouthpieceinyourmouthandsealyourlipsaroundit• Pressontheinhaleroncetodeliverthedose• Take5deepbreaths.Makesurethatthevalveshutterswitheachbreath• Removetheinhalerfromthespacerandshakeitinbetweeneachdose

REMEMBER:Foreachpuffordoseyoumusttake5fullbreaths
