    Asthma is a disease of the airways,the small tubes which carry air in andout of the lungs.

    When exposed to certain asthma triggers(such as cold air, smoke, exercise, pollen, andviruses) the sensitive airways react. They canbecome red and swollen (inamed) which causesthe airway muscles to tighten and produce excessmucus (phlegm). This makes the airways

    narrow and difficult for a person to breathe.Common asthma symptoms include:

    shortness of breath

    wheezing

    coughing

    a feeling of tightness in the chest.

    Asthma is a manageable health condition.Although there is currently no cure, good asthmamanagement and education can ensure peoplewith asthma can lead normal, active lives.

    It is especially important to manage yourasthma carefully during pregnancy, becauseyou are breathing for two. Keep taking yourasthma medicines as usual, and talk to yourdoctor as early as possible about your asthmacare during pregnancy.

    This brochure provides information abouthow healthy habits and lifestyle choicescan help with your asthma.

    Taking care of your asthma also involves:

    taking your preventer medicine regularlyif your doctor has prescribed it

    knowing how to use your inhaler (puffer)properly this could include using a spacer

    following your written asthma action plan

    avoiding things that make your asthma worse(e.g. tobacco smoke, other fumes, or animalsthat you are allergic to)

    seeing your doctor regularly for asthma checkups

    asking your doctor or pharmacist for informationand advice about asthma.

    Everyone with asthma should have their ownwritten asthma action plan and follow it. If youdont have one, ask your doctor.

    Losing just a bit of weight could make youfeel better and breathe more easily

    Go smoke-freeSmoking and asthma is a dangerous combination.Smoking or breathing other peoples smoke:

    damages your lungs

    makes asthma harder to manage

    stops asthma medicines working properly

    increases your risk of asthma attacks or are-ups damages childrens lungs and worsens wheezing

    and asthma.

    Tobacco smoke that clings in your hair andclothing is still poisonous. Smoking home-grownor illegally produced loose tobacco (chop-chop)is as harmful as smoking branded cigarettes. Anytype of smoke damages your lungs. People withasthma who quit smoking have healthier lungswithin just 6 weeks.

    If you are planning a pregnancy, you andyour partner should stop smoking beforethe pregnancy to protect your unborn baby.Protect kids growing lungs by making sureyour home and car are smoke-free.

    Enjoy healthy eatingFresh fruit and vegetables are full of antioxidants,which may improve your lung health and helpavoid asthma attacks. Aim for 5 servings ofvegetables and 2 servings of fruit every day.Eating sh often may help with your asthma too.

    Eating too much saturated fat may prevent yourasthma medicines working properly. Limit theamount of convenience foods high in saturatedfat, and choose lean meats, skinless chicken andreduced-fat dairy foods.

    Milk and other dairy foods dont cause or worsenasthma symptoms.

    Healthy eating might help your asthma

    Enjoy a physicallyactive lifestyleDont let your asthma stop you being physicallyactive. Choose an activity you enjoy, as this canhelp motivate you, and aim for at least 30 minutesof moderately intense physical activity every

    day or most days. Moderately intense physicalactivity means any activity that makes you breathenoticeably faster and deeper than usual, but doesnot make you puff and pant.

    Asthma symptoms after physical activity arecommon but treatable, so dont let this put youoff being active. If being physically active causesasthma symptoms, tell your doctor so you can ndthe treatment that works best for you. This couldbe as simple as taking extra puffs of your relieverbefore you warm up.

    Asthma symptoms should not stop youfrom participating in sports or physical activity,whether just for fun or more competitively.Many of our Olympic athletes have asthma.

    Consider getting involved in structured exercisetraining, as people with asthma who participatein this sort of training may feel better.

    If you have asthma symptoms when you arephysically active or exercise, then there are somethings you can do:

    Get as t as possible. The tter you are,the more you can exercise before asthmasymptoms start.

    Exercise in a place that is warm and humid avoid cold, dry air if possible.

    Avoid exercising where there are high levelsof pollens, dusts, fumes or pollution.

    Try to breathe through your nose (not yourmouth) when you exercise. This makes the airwarm and moist when it reaches your lungs cold dry air can make symptoms worse.

    Make sure you do a proper warm-up beforeexercising. If you have asthma symptoms afteryour warm-up but taking your reliever helps settlethem, then you may be able to carry on withoutgetting symptoms again during your session, evenif you exercise hard.

    After you exercise, do cooling down exercises

    while breathing through your nose and coveringyour mouth (especially if the air is cold and dry).

    If you participate in competitive sports,make sure you check which asthma medicinesyou are allowed to take by contacting theAustralian Sports Anti-Doping Authority(asada.gov.au) and the World Anti-Doping Authority (wada-ama.org).

    Getting more active can make you feel better

    Lighten the loadon your lungsBeing overweight may make asthma harder tomanage, as carrying extra weight puts extra strainon your lungs, and might also worsen asthma.

    If you are overweight, losing just 510% of yourcurrent weight (e.g. 5 or 10 kilograms for a personwho weighs 100 kilograms) can really improve

    your asthma, so you get fewer asthma symptomsand need less medicine.

    Breathing problems during sleep are also commonamong people who are overweight, and can makeasthma harder to manage. If you snore or dont feelrefreshed after a nights sleep, talk to your doctor.

    Gastro-oesophageal reux disease is commonin overweight people so see your doctor if youhave reux, heartburn or indigestion.

    Avoid the fu

    People with asthma should keep their u shotsup to date. Ask your doctor which vaccinationsare recommended for your age group andhealth conditions.

    Keep up your u shots

    Take care of yourmental healthAsthma can be harder to manage or copewith if you have depression or anothermental health condition. Asthmacan also affect your mental health.

    If your asthma is getting you downor if you feel anxious, tell your doctor

    Talk to your doctor if you have been feeling downor anxious, or if you havent been able to feelinterested in things you normally enjoy. You canalso contact beyondblue for more informationon depression and anxiety, and where to get help(see Further information ).

    If problems with your asthma are getting you

    down, talk to your doctor. Your local AsthmaFoundation can also provide support, educationand information to help you manage your asthma(see Further information ).

    Learning how to manage your asthma andhaving regular asthma check-ups with yourdoctor can make you feel better, especiallyif you are experiencing depression and anxiety.Regular exercise can also help reduce symptomsof anxiety and depression in people with asthma.

    If you are pregnant and have asthma, or have hadasthma at any time in your life, make sure yourobstetrician and midwife know you have asthma.

    If you cant breathe, neither can your baby.

    If you have asthma symptoms while pregnant,act immediately: take your reliever puffer straightaway and contact your doctor if symptomsreturn. If you cant breathe normally within a fewminutes of taking your reliever puffer during anasthma attack, ask someone to call 000 for anambulance (nationalasthma.org.au/emergency).

    Plan a healthypregnancy with asthma If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy,you need to know some asthma facts:

    It is especially important to manage yourasthma carefully during pregnancy. Untreatedasthma, poorly controlled asthma or seriousare-ups during pregnancy put mothers andbabies at risk.

    You should not stop taking your asthmamedicines. Talk to your doctor as soonas possible to plan your asthma careduring pregnancy.

    Asthma can change during pregnancy.Your doctor may advise you to have asthmacheck-ups more often while you are pregnant.

    Both parents should stop smoking beforethe woman becomes pregnant to protectthe unborn baby.

    Women with asthma who are planninga pregnancy should see their doctor to updatetheir written asthma action plan before thepregnancy.

    Before becoming pregnant is also a good timeto talk to your doctor or pharmacist about allthe medicines you are taking for asthma and anyother condition (including any non-prescriptionmedicines and complementary medicines). Askabout which medicines you should keep takingduring pregnancy, and whether there are anysafer options.
