Plant Growth and Reproduction: Day 1 Bean Planting

IntroductionThe ASSURE model is an instructional guide for planning and conducting

lessons that integrate media and technology while focusing on the learner's

needs. It is based on six classroom procedures that Analyze Learners, State

Objectives, Select Methods, Media, and Materials, Utilize Media and Materials,

Require Learner Participation, and Evaluate and Revise.

Analyze Learners

Learner’s General Characteristics

The instructional unit is designed for an average 7th grade classroom. The

students range from 12 to 14 years old. The students come from various

socioeconomic statuses with 70% of the students being white, while 20% African-

American and 10% Hispanic. 10 of the students are boys, while 7 are girls.

Entry Competencies

The students have knowledge and experience with:

1. Using a SMART Board.

2. Working with Twitter.

3. Working in small groups to collaborate

Learning Styles

Page 2: Assure model day 1

The students for the most part slightly under their reading level. They do not

respond to oral lecturing and instead prefer audio and visual means as a way to

present and learn material. Most do not test well making rubrics the most

popular means for grading objective achievement.

State Objectives

At the end of this lesson which is estimated to last one class day, the students

will have learned the fundamentals of planting a bean plant and methods of how

to take care of their plant. The students will have constant reinforcement and

support throughout the process and may use the Glogster digital poster on the

SMART Board at any time throughout the class to assist them. At the end of the

class, my students will be able to successfully be able to pot a plant as well as

know how to ensure the plant will grow successfully with 100% proficiency.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials

The Method chosen for this lesson was large-group instruction followed by the

use of small groups. The lesson will begin with the instructor showing the

Glogster and allowing the students to interact with it. Following the explanation,

the students will break into small groups and follow the instructor as he or she

makes their own bean plant at the same pace as the class.

Utilize Media and Materials

Preview the Materials

The teacher samples the Glogster poster to ensure that all links are working

properly. The teacher will also check to ensure that plenty of potting soil, water

bottles, bean seeds, newspapers, and gardening shovels are available.

Prepare the Materials

The teacher ensures the SMART Board and internet are running smoothly to

view the digital Glogster poster.

Prepare the Environment

The Glogster poster is loaded up on the SMART Board. Work stations are

created by placing newspaper onto the tables or desks in the classroom as well

as gardening shovels. Potting soil and bean seeds will be passed out by the

teacher as the students need them to reduce the possibilities of any messes.

Prepare the Learners

The students are told that they will be learning how to pot and take care of a

bean plant as well as being asked to place their plants in various parts of the

classroom to demonstrate a later lesson. They are also shown how to navigate

the digital poster that will aid them in their planting.

Provide the Learning Experience

Page 4: Assure model day 1

The teacher will begin by going over the Glogster digital poster and explaining

the various steps that need to be taken. The teacher will then, at the same time

as his or her students, follow the Glogster poster step by step. The teacher will

elaborate on each step explaining why and how each step aids in plant growth.

Following the planting process, the teacher will ask the students to place their

plants in various parts of the classroom for a later observation at the end of the

week.

Require Learner Participation

Large Group Activities

In the beginning of the lesson, the class will follow along as the teacher explains

how to use the digital poster.

Small Group Activities

After the poster has been explained, the students will break into groups to aid

each other in the planting process.

Technology

Students will interact with a Glogster digital poster to learn how to properly pot

and care for their bean plants.

The class Twitter page will be used at the beginning of the class as a “bellringer”

to see where the students may stand when it comes to plant growth.

Evaluate and Revise

Page 5: Assure model day 1

Assessment of Learner Achievement

Students’ knowledge of the lesson can be gaged by the success of their potted

plant and accuracy to that which matches the Glogster poster.

Evaluation of Media and Methods

The students will be asked at the end of the day what part of the lesson they

liked the most and what part they liked the least.

Evaluation of Overall Instruction

At the end of the lesson students can explain how to pot a bean plant and what it

needs to successfully grow.
