ABOUT THE ASCO ANNUAL STUDENT DATA REPORT

The ASCO Annual Student Data Report is developed from data provided by the 21 schools and colleges of optometry in the United States and Puerto Rico. Due to unavailable data during the data collection period, some reporting tables are incomplete, which may affect the accuracy of averages and totals for those tables. If you have questions regarding content, please contact Joanne Zuckerman, Manager, Data and Surveys, via e-mail at [email protected].

(Twenty schools reporting. ASCO’s 21st school will be included next year as its first class begins in fall, 2012.)

(updated 12-9-14)

Enrollment

The total number of full-time students enrolled in the 20 professional O.D. programs during academic year

2011-2012 is 6,289, an increase of 3.8% over last year, and an increase of 14.6% since 2006-2007. The

number of full-time first-year students increased by 0.8% over last year and increased by 16.7% over the past

five years. The percentage of female full-time students in the professional O.D. programs rose to 64.3%,

from 63.9% last year; five years ago the percentage was 64.2%. Only one school reported more full-time

male students than female students in 2011-2012. (tables 1.1 and 1.2)

year; five years ago the percentage was 3.2%. The percentage of full-time Hispanic or Latino students

In 2011-2012, full-time and part-time students come from every state in the U.S. and the District of

Columbia, from Puerto Rico and Canada, and from 15+ foreign countries. More students reside in

California than any other state, with Texas coming in second. (tables 1.17 and 1.19)

Graduates

The total number of graduates at the schools and colleges of optometry, both regular and special programs,

decreased 1.8% from 2010 (1356) to 2011 (1332). (table 2.1)

The number of graduates receiving the O.D. degree through only the regular O.D. program decreased 1.3%

from 2010 (1,325) to 2011 (1,308). (table 2.1)

In 2011, 63.6% of graduates of the professional O.D. programs, both regular and special programs, were

female, down from 64.7% the previous year. In 2011, there were more female graduates than male

graduates at all but one school of optometry. (table 2.2)

The percentage of Black or African American graduates of regular and special programs in 2011 decreased

from 2.7% to 2.6%; in 2006 it was 3.6%. The percentage of Hispanic graduates increased from 4.1% to

was 22.9%. The percentage of White graduates decreased from 59.1% to 58.3%; in 2006 it was 64.7%.

(table 2.3)

Financial Aid/Student Expenses

In 2010-2011, more than four-fifths of all students at 16 out of 18 optometry schools reporting received

financial aid. At 11 of these 18 schools, 90% or more of students received financial aid; in 2009-2010 this

was the case at ten schools. Average awards for residents ranged from $30,667 to $56,976, and for non-

residents from $36,713 to $70,025. (table 3.1)

In 2011-2012, the average tuition for a first-year resident student enrolled in the professional O.D. program

was $18,901 at a public school and $28,800 at a private school. The cost for all direct expenses (tuition,

fees, books and instruments) for a first-year resident student was $27,097 for a public school and $33,706 for

a private school. First-year non-residents paid an average $34,824 for tuition and $43,020 for all direct

expenses at a public school, and $30,035 for tuition and $34,942 for all direct expenses at a private school.

Regular - Students who are currently enrolled in each class leading to the O.D. degree and taking a full-time course load. (continued on following page)

Transfer - Students who have enrolled after first attending another institution of optometry and leaving in good academic standing.

Third Year

Male Female

Repeat - Students who were previously enrolled as a regular student and did not advance to the next class. For example, a student in a second year of attendance but who is repeating enough first-year courses to be considered part of the first-year

class is a repeat student. Repeat students are taking a sufficient number of credit hours to be considered a full-time student. A repeat student is not a student who was suspended and, after re-application, admitted again as a regular student.

Dismissed/Voluntarily Discontinued (Transfer After Dismissed/Voluntarily Discontinued) - Students who have enrolled after first attending another optometry institution where they were dismissed or left because of academic and/or disciplinary

reasons.

Regular - Students who are currently enrolled in each class leading to the O.D. degree and taking a full-time course load.

Transfer - Students who have enrolled after first attending another institution of optometry and leaving in good academic standing.

Repeat - Students who were previously enrolled as a regular student and did not advance to the next class. For example, a student in a second year of attendance but who is repeating enough first-year courses to be considered part of the first-

year class is a repeat student. Repeat students are taking a sufficient number of credit hours to be considered a full-time student. A repeat student is not a student who was suspended and, after re-application, admitted again as a regular student.

Dismissed/Voluntarily Discontinued (Transfer After Dismissed/Voluntarily Discontinued) - Students who have enrolled after first attending another optometry institution where they were dismissed or left because of academic and/or

disciplinary reasons.

related to his or her ability to complete an O.D. degree. In addition, the

class into which they want to transfer MUST have a vacancy. Requests

for transfer are handled on an individual basis by members of the

NOVA

The College of Optometry has instituted an extended program leading to the Doctor of

Optometry (O.D.) degree. The extended program is designed for individuals who are

returning to school after an absence, are changing professional fields, or who require

a lighter course load initially because of family or other obligations. Students in the

extended program take courses with the full-time students but with a reduced course

load. Coursework covered in the first two years of the traditional full-time program is

covered in three years in the extended program. The last two years of both programs
