Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics

It seems like yesterday I was writing my first article for the e-Bulletin as President, where I announced my presidential initia-tives and outlined my vision for the organization. In last year’s

annual report, I circled back and gave you an update on the excit-ing progress we had made in a year. I am only the second president with a two-year presidency, which was proposed to the board as a presidential initiative to keep APGO strong and evolving. Over the last 18 months there have been some dynamic shifts which I will tell you about in this, my last communication to you as APGO President, a position which comes with great challenges and rewards.

First of all, how lucky was I to serve as the President of APGO through its 50th Anniversary year? We started with a great celebration in Hawaii at the Faculty Development Semi-nar, where we remembered the wise founders of the organization and all of the accomplishments of APGO in the last 50 years. How proud and amazed the founders of the organi-zation would have been to see over 200 of the best and brightest medical educators exchanging ideas and information at the Martin L. Stone Faculty Development Seminar, a meeting which has successfully trained undergraduate educators for twenty-seven years. Nancy Stone was there to celebrate with us and to officially endow the seminar in honor of Marty, one of the founders of the organization who sadly passed away just three months before the meeting. As we prepare for the 2014 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting, do you think our founders could have imagined in their wildest dreams what has transpired in the field of medical education with all the new techniques and technolo-gies we now have to foster resident and medical student education in obstetrics and gynecology? The first meeting of the organization included 11 attendees; this year we will have over 1,000 educators sharing their ideas during oral, poster, and round table presentations, film festivals, and our first “Tech Talk” session, where we will share our favorite Apps with each other (the term App didn’t even exist until 1990).

I outlined three goals two-years ago, and I am proud to report that we have made great progress on all three of them. My goal to foster and support scholarly work within education in our specialty has seen great forward movement. The goal to raise a million dollars through our capital campaign to sustain our Capstone Programs in the future is so close with $740,000 being raised to date. Won’t you help us meet that goal with a donation today? By sustaining support for our Academic Scholars and Leaders Program and the newly revised Surgical Education Scholars Program, we will continue to be the organization that supports the fundamentals of basic medical education scholarship for our specialty. During the past few months, the hard work of Alice Goepfert, MD, and the newly re-purposed Electronic Resources Committee, has allowed us to develop a search-able database of presentations from previous and future CREOG & APGO Annual Meetings. This should be an incredible resource for our members. We can now build on prior work and begin to develop projects that are powered for publication and appropriate for evi-dence based decision making within ob-gyn education. In addition, a small task force of the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee headed by John Dalrymple, MD, has given us an outlet for some of our current works by publishing expanded abstracts in Teaching and Learning in Medicine for the past two Annual Meetings. This is incredibly valuable opportunity and a big step forward to increasing scholarly work.

While it is difficult to say goodbye to old friends, William N.P. Herbert, MD, will be stepping down as the physician leader of the APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program. After a thorough search, the Advisory Committee Chair will transition the leadership to Lee Learman, MD, PhD, who is highly prepared to lead and will ensure the continued quality of this program.

My term has been unique in that there have been transitions in other organizations within our specialty that have opened doors for renewed alliances and collaborations. The Joint CREOG and APGO Task Force on Preparation for Residency, under the direction of John Gianopoulos, MD, and Randall Robinson, MD, has worked

to produce robust prerequisites for medical students matched into obstetrics and gynecology. Also, the APGO uWISE task force, under the direction of Maya Hammoud, MD, has develop an exam based on these prerequisites which will be launched in July. This May, APGO & CREOG will present a “Step Up to Residency” program for senior medical students attending the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting. And, I am

so pleased to announce that we have been given a unique opportunity to explore working with ACOG and their journal, Obstetrics and Gynecology, to produce a supplement whereby the best submissions from the CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting will be published, further promoting scholarly education in our field.

As for the future, as I end my term, I am just as excited to see the continued development and rewards of this work. In my presi-dential address, “Oh, the Places We’ll Go!” I plan to paint a picture of collaboration and the promotion of educational scholarship that we can attain together with our colleagues. I imagine it is a vision not unlike those of our founders 50 years ago.

Message from APGO President Amy E. Young, MD

Anniversary OverviewIn celebration of its 50th year, APGO launched an anniversary campaign with several year-long goals: to increase visibility and awareness of the organization’s contributions to ob-gyn education; to celebrate APGO’s accomplishments over the past 50 years; to provide proof of permanency, achievement, gratitude and legacy; to foster a dialogue across generations; and to ensure a brighter future for women’s health care. Through the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign, fundraising events, and giving back to the membership through several educational grants, APGO was successful in reaching its campaign goals.

50th Anniversary EventsTo engage the membership in the celebration, APGO held celebratory events throughout the campaign period. In 2012, APGO held a 5K Fun Run and Walk at the 2012 Faculty Development Seminar in Palm Beach, Florida, and a “Come Out and Play” Game Night at the 2012 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida to benefit the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign. A “Flashback to 1963” Party at the 2013 Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar in Maui, Hawaii kicked off the official anniversary year. APGO’s 50th Anniversary Gala, A Monte Carlo Casino Night and Silent Auction at the 2013 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, brought the membership together in celebration of APGO’s milestone and raised a considerable amount for the Capital Campaign. Two additional fundraising activites are planned to fund the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign. A 5K Suds Run and Walk is planned for the 2014 Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar and a Networking Reception is planned for the 2014 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting.

Giving BackAPGO awarded one $50,000 50th Anniversary Endowment Fund Grant and three $15,000 Medical Education Endowment Fund Grants in 2013. 50th Anniversary Endowment Fund Grant University of California, San Francisco, Principal Investigator Amy (Meg) Autry, MD, “Clinical Care in Low-Resource Settings: Preparing Providers and Fostering Leaders”2013 Medical Education Endowment Fund Grants• Virginia Commonwealth University Inova Fairfax Campus,

2013 APGO SCHOLARS & SCHOLARSHIPS

APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) ProgramThe APGO ASL Program advances education in ob-gyn by providing physician faculty with the skills and knowledge necessary to be outstanding teachers. In its 15th year, the program has graduated over 300 educators.

The 2013-2014 Academic Scholars and Leaders class met in January, March and August of 2013, and will graduate at the 2014 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting in Atlanta. Twenty-four new scholars were selected for the 2014-2015 class and will hold their first meeting in January 2014.

APGO Resident Scholars Award Program The APGO Resident Scholars Award Program introduces residents with an interest in medical education to the ben-efits of APGO early in their careers. Since its inception, the award has inspired numerous residents to choose a career in women’s health education.

The 2013 APGO Resident Scholar Award recipients were each given $1,000 in travel funds to attend the 2013 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting. Award recipients were: Catherine Albright, MD, Women & Infants Hospital, Brown University; Jennifer Amorosa, MD, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons/New York Presbyterian Hospital; Sarah Dotters-Katz, MD, Duke University; Lisa Hofler, MD, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; Nigel Pereira, MD, Drexel University College of Medicine; and Lorene Temming, MD, Carolinas Medical Center.

APGO International Scholarship As part of APGO’s commit-ment to actively engage international ob-gyn educa-tors, the APGO International Scholarship enables interna-tional attendees to participate in the APGO Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar (FDS). The APGO

FDS provides an excellent opportunity for physician educators who teach medical students and residents to improve their teaching skills and learn best practices through plenary sessions, interactive small group sessions, workshops and round tables. A stipend of up to $5,000 is paid to the sponsoring member department to help defray the awardee’s costs associated with this scholarship. The 2013 APGO International Scholars were:

Daniel Murokora, MD, Makerere Univerity, Kampala, Uganda; nomitated by Irwin Merkatz, MD, Albert Einstein College of MedicineDavid Kolbilla, MB McB, MS, FWACS, University of Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana; nominated by Timothy R.B. Johnson, MD, University of Michigan

UMEC UPDATEThe APGO Undergraduate Medical

Education Committee had a very produc-tive year. We began by celebrating APGO’s 50th Anniversary with a “Flashback to 1963” party at the January APGO Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar in Maui, Hawaii. The semi-nar is highly regarded for providing excellent opportunities to energize ob-gyn educators and to network with other physician-educators active-ly engaged in the pursuit of excellence in medical education. The program honored APGO’s 50th Anniversary, with plenary sessions, breakouts and round table sessions centered around medical education topics from past, present and future. We also hosted three international scholars who participated in a panel discussion on global women’s health education. The Lunchtime Learning Session focused on lead-ership and allowed attendees the opportunity for one-on-one career mentoring. Highlights of the year

Development CommitteeThe Development Committee provides grants for new project initiatives, raises unre-stricted funds for identified projects and spearheads liaison activities with the APGO Corporate Liaison Council (CLC).

APGO TREASURER’S REPORTRobert F. Flora, MD, MPH, MBA, APGO Secretary-Treasurer

Fiscal year 2013 was a very exciting

year as we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of APGO. In honor of our anniversary, we awarded three $15,000 awards and

one $50,000 award from the APGO Endowment Fund account.

We continued the APGO Capstone Fundraising efforts and made excellent headway toward our $1,000,000 goal. By the end of the fiscal year, we had raised $617,000 mainly from individ-ual contributions from our members. Additional pledges brought the Capstone fund total to over $700,000.

It is not too late to join in the fundrais-ing activities, and I encourage you to make a contribution today. Your con-tributions to the Capital Campaign will help sustain APGO’s four Capstone Programs:

•APGOFacultyDevelopmentSeminar•APGOAcademicScholarsand Leaders Program•APGOSurgicalEducationScholarsProgram•APGOClerkshipDirectors’School

I want to thank all the members for their unwavering support of our mission of advancing women’s health through education.
