Rafael Plascencia ~ Administrator of the Year ~ “I felt humbled and honored when I was informed I was nominated and selected as ACSA Region 17’s Elementary Principal of the Year. I was humbled then and I remain humbled and touched today by this wonderful acknowledgement!”

Gunn Marie Hansen ~ Central Office Administrator ~ “It is with great humility that I accept the award as Region 17 Central Office Administrator of the Year. There are so many outstanding district office administrators in Orange County and I am truly honored to have been selected. A special thank you to Debbie Backstrom, Leadership Team Orange, President, for the nomination.”

Melissa Miller ~ Co-Administrator ~ “I would like to thank ACSA Region 17 for the Co-Administrator of the Year Award. I feel very honored to work with such great people and I know that there are other administrators out there who are just as deserving of this award”

Brendan Shields ~ Classified Leader ~ “It was an honor to be recognized by such an incredible organization, an organization that values the contributions of certificated, confidential, and classified leaders. It was a wonderful feeling to share a stage with so many outstanding administrators that spend every day working tirelessly to contribute to the success of our students.”

Tina Dingillo ~ Confidential Employee ~ “I am honored and humbled to receive this award. I love my job and the people I get to work with every day. Thank you ACSA Region 17 for this recognition.”

Cathie Abdel ~ Personnel/HR Adminstrator ~ “It is an honor to be recognized as Personnel Administrator of the Year for ACSA Region17, an organization that does so much to support educational leaders in Orange County. I feel privileged to be working in public education and impacting the lives of our students and receiving this award has been humbling. Thank you ACSA Region 17.”

Lynda Wambaugh ~ Special Education Administrator ~ “I am extremely humbled to be ACSA’s Region 17 Special Education Administrator of the Year. After 33 years in the educational field, I am honored to be recognized for my contributions in making a difference in children’s lives.”

Bob Silva ~ Robert E. Kelly Award ~ “I have served on the Region 17 Board for 15 years and still in awe at the Administrator of the Year program. I didn’t realize the impact when standing up there being recognized by my peers. There are many retirees who deserve this award but to be recognized by the Retirement Committee has made volunteering more meaningful. Through all these years, the recognition stories continue to be outstanding. It is a shame that corporate America and the public are not aware of what we actually do.”

Malina Thiem ~ Classified Champion ~ I am humble and honored to receive the Classified “Champion” Award. When I heard that I was selected to receive the award, I was surprised, privileged and grateful.

Larry Kemper ~ Tracy Gaffey Award ~ “A marvelous evening in every respect. It served as a reminder of Tracy Gaffey’s commitment to mentoring emerging leaders for ACSA and the profession and a challenge to all of us to carry on with his vision. What an honor!”

Robert Kirkland, VALIC ~ Partners in Educational Excellence ~ “It is inspiring to see such a diverse group of talented leaders forming a “team” that lifts the overall educational experience for so many fortunate young learners.”

Greg Franklin ~ Superintendent ~ “When notified of the ACSA Award, my first reaction was one of pride in the outstanding team of administrators who facilitate the work of the district every day. I certainly appreciate the recognition, but it really belongs to the entire TUSD team.”

REGION 17’sEVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDING RECIPIENTS

Bowers Museum was a fitting venue for ACSA Region 17’s annual Every Student Succeeding celebration. A record 28 students were honored at a breakfast on March 14, 2014, with 250 attendees - including families, administrators and support staff - were present to congratulate the students on their courage and perseverance in overcoming significant challenges and achieving success! The Bowers staff, headed by Nancy Warzer-Brady, has been so impressed by these students and this recognition event that they have asked Region 17 to hold the event there for many years to come.

The Every Student Succeeding program is one of the most rewarding activities ACSA and Region 17 sponsors support. It is a vivid reminder of our mission and, as Elaine Keeley, Region Board Member and Irvine Unified principal said of Every Student Succeeding and Administrator of the Year, “We want to share the heartfelt passion that these events provide to connect us to our work. ACSA Region 17 connects all of us to like-minded people who believe in the potential of teachers and children to make a difference for the future.”

ACSA Region 17 and the law firm Dannis Woliver Kelley, one of our business partners, successfully concluded Region 17’s inaugural K-12 Every Student Succeeding Art Contest on May 12, during the annual Celebration of Excellence.

The art contest was designed to extend our recognition of student achievement to include the arts, as well as to collect outstanding art pieces to professionally frame for our 13 business partners as a heart-felt thank you for their support.

Over 50 pieces of art from Orange County K-12 Schools were entered in the initial contest, and of those, 15 were selected as winners to be framed and awarded to our corporate friends. ACSA Region 17 President Bob Johnson said, “We are so proud of the opportunity to showcase this art work in public and corporate settings throughout the county.” Bob also sent each student winner a Certificate of Achievement, designed specifically for the occasion by Dannis Woliver Kelley, who also gave a $50 gift card from Michael’s to the teacher of each winner, for the purchase of art supplies for the classroom.

“It was a win-win all around,” said Jan Billings, Region 17 Executive Director. “We are able to properly thank our sponsors for their generous support while also supporting arts education and recognizing emerging artists in Orange County at the same time. We also want to thank Stephanie Paggi and Bob Silva, ACSA Region 17’s Business Partners co-chairs for their work with Dannis Woliver Kelley, a truly supportive partner.”

Felicia Stucken, teacher at Warner Middle School in Westminster, summarized it best when she said her student “has been absolutely beaming about his artwork, and our journalism teacher is having his students include a write-up of [his] award in our school newspaper.”

Please join me in congratulating the following artists, who now have at least one art piece professionally framed and publicly displayed:

Most of you know that it is the goal of ACSA Region 17 to provide information and support services to enhance the performance of school administrators in our region. One of the very best ways for educational leaders in California to enhance their knowledge, skills, and performance is through the training and development opportunities offered by ACSA.
