Clerkships

M3 Required Clinical Clerkships

The required clerkships are graded Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail. In order to earn a grade of Honors, students must receive honors on the shelf exam And on the clinical performance evaluation. Students receiving honors on the shelf exam Or the clinical performance evaluation and passing all other components, receive the grade of High Pass. The Grade Comparison graphs summarize the final distribution of grades in the clerkships. Following are the unedited narrative evaluations of Student A for performance on the required M3 clerkships.

General Surgery 07/06/2015 - 08/27/2015 Final Grade: Pass

Student A performed well during his surgical clerkship. He was an active and valuable member of the surgical team. He demonstrated a good fund of knowledge for his level of training. He was caring and compassionate towards his patients. Some comments from the faculty are as follows: "Good fund of knowledge, very hard working. Strives to continuously better himself. Was eager to attempt procedures and learn about new topics that interested him" "Pleasant and participated in expected duties. Showed interest in surgical procedures. Interacts well with other members of the team" "Student A was an excellent medical student. He was always in the hospital early to prepare for rounds, and his presentations were better than I would expect from a third year medical student in July. A

pleasure to work with, he got along very well with the team and all of the SICU staff. He will make a strong resident in any field he chooses"

Internal Medicine 08/31/2015 - 10/22/2015 Final Grade: Pass

Student A performed well during his Internal Medicine clerkship. He was noted to be hardworking and eager to learn and improve, and made important contributions to patient care. Faculty comments include: "Student A is a strong student. His medical knowledge is above what is expected for his level of training. He was reliable and was actively engaged with our team and the care of the teams' patients. He showed enthusiasm the whole month that I worked with him." Neurology 01/04/2016 - 01/28/2016 Final Grade: High Pass

Student A exceeded expectations on his clinical performance evaluation on the neurology clerkship. Comments from his evaluators: "It was a pleasure to work with Student A. He developed an instant rapport with patients and their families. He took the extra time to ensure that a patient with a communication barrier understood the diagnosis and treatment plan. He displayed intellectual curiosity, and would independently read about relevant neurological topics." "He works hard and committed to pursue his career development as a physician, hard working and willing to acquire new information and consult as appropriate." "Hard working, conscientious student who worked consistently at a level superior to his training." Student A has good work ethic and is a great team player. Overall an excellent student.

Ophthalmology 02/08/2016 - 02/12/2016 Final Grade: Pass

Student A was pleasant to work with. When encouraged and with more exposure, his skill set did progress during the week.

Obstetrics and Gynecology 02/15/2016 - 03/24/2016 Final Grade: High Pass

Student A is a very personable, pleasant student who functioned as an integral team-member during the course of the clerkship. He was actively involved in patient care, particularly on the obstetrical unit. He is a resourceful individual who is able to critically think about problems. His questions are well-thought and insightful. Patients and nurses think highly of him and find him to be an attentive, empathetic provider.

Family Medicine I 03/28/2016 - 05/05/2016 Final Grade: Pass

It was a pleasure to work with Student A. He was always interested in even the minute details of the patient's presenting problem. Took initiative to learn on his own in down time. Excellent medical student. Student A appears to have a solid knowledge base and a keen interest in learning.

Psychiatry 05/09/2016 - 06/16/2016 Final Grade: High Pass

"The student sincerely approached all the patients regarding a detailed history and actively participated in the discussion of theory, history, symptoms and diagnosis. He used his time efficiently and was organized."" Student A brought his enthusiasm and engaging attitude to his psychiatry clerkship experience where it served him AND his patients exceedingly well. His sincerity and determination to learn as much as possible in order to understand his patients was obvious throughout the rotation and noted by the inpatient and outpatient directors (quoted in the observations above.) Although the students move rather rapidly through the different services, Student A managed to find the time to follow up with patients and remained engaged in their treatment and care. His non-judgmental attitude towards patients allowed him to engage effectively with patients who were in the throes of delusion. He discussed his efforts to discover ways to connect without challenging or encouraging their psychotic thinking, which actually facilitated "real conversation." Student A was an active member of his student team, participating in discussions with support and humor. Student A's clinical performance exceeded expectations.

Summary

Based on academic performance, Student A has been placed in the fourth quartile ** of the medical school class. The quartile ranking represents only academic performance. Please consider all aspects of this student’s record in your evaluation. Student A's narrative evaluations speak to his strong work ethic and positive attitude. He was consistently prepared and focused on learning and improving.

**Quartile placement is determined solely by final grades in courses and clerkships. Students are given 3 points for each grade of honors, 2 points for each grade of high pass, 1 point for pass and -1 point for each failing grade. Every course in the M1-M3 year is counted equally with no weighting of courses or clerkships. USMLE scores are not considered in quartile placement. School of Medicine does not compute class rank.
