“ One of the magical things about Nashville is just how many incredibly talented people are here and the way they support each other. ”

– Callie Khouri, writer and producer for Nashville

The quote above applies not only to this great city hosting our 2013 meeting, but to the attendees joining us as well. I am always impressed by the incredibly gifted and talented clinicians who attend the AVA meetings and the way they support the specialty, and each other. The niche of vascular access is a unique one, practiced in all settings, and it is often seen as part of another specialty. It is here, at the Annual Scientific Meeting, that we can refocus our efforts and energies into defining our practice as a specialty in its own right, and perfecting the science that is vascular access.

Once again, the DTEAM has worked hard to present to you an agenda that will motivate, excite and challenge you. I have been honored to lead this committee for the last year. The quality, integrity and work ethic of this team has made my job so very easy. This year, in addition to a strong pediatric track supported by Pedivan, we have included sessions that will focus on the patient side of the line, challenging cases in dialysis and other central access, ways to move your scope of practice forward and improve your technology skills and savvy. We have included pre-meeting offerings that will help you to prepare for the VA-BC exam, make the transition from the adult to the pediatric world, learn about what bugs you, and get started in the specialty of vascular access.

We have brought back the roundtables this year by popular demand, and have incorporated both 30-minute and 1-hour breakout sessions to present valuable information and content. You won’t want to miss our video session moderated by Dr. Jack LeDonne. Once again this year, we will offer continuing education credit for our sessions to physicians and PA’s, nurses, radiology techs and respiratory therapists. Our faculty includes speakers from five different countries and various clinical roles, truly showcasing our international, multidisciplinary focus. Also based on your feedback, we have extended the hours of exhibit time so you can learn more about what is new in vascular access products.

I have always felt that the AVA members were my extended family, and attending the AVA Scientific Meeting often feels like part family reunion and part going back to school. The support that the AVA members share with one another is something not found in many other places, and Nashville, TN is a great place to showcase this. If this is your first AVA, I hope that you will join us for the First Time Attendees’ Session and reach out to the Ambassadors if you need help with anything during the meeting. Take this time to network with colleagues, learn about new things and most of all, have fun.

Welcome Home.

Sincerely,

Chris Cavanaugh, BSN, CRNI, VA-BCDTEAM Chair

Keynote Speaker & Meeting Highlights

KEYNOTE SPEAKER If You Can’t Stand Up, Stand Out! — with Michael SchlappiFriday, September 20th 9:30 AM – 10:30 AMDo you ever wonder if your mind and body will keep up with the demands of your life? Do you ever feel overwhelmed? Do you need inspiration? Our keynote speaker is a master of dealing with change through enhanced focus and revitalized energy. Gold medalist, author, businessman, husband and father of five – Mike Schlappi understands the need for consistent energy and constant focus. He served on the Board of Trustees for the 2002 Olympic Games, won two gold medals, and was honored in Utah as a Top 50 athlete of the century. What’s the big deal? He did it all from his wheelchair. Paralyzed from the waist down in a childhood accident, Mike’s back and dreams were broken; but he received a special gift. One of those precious, and oft-times elusive secrets of life, and he will share it with us.

When they speak, the vascular access decision makers listen. Now you can too. Learn from world renowned experts as they share their experiences, knowledge and insights in general sessions open to all attendees.

Procedural CVC Complications: When It All Goes Horribly WrongMary T. Tessier, RN, BSN and Andrew Bodenham, FRCA, MDSunday, September 22nd 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM

This session combines the personal experiences of a patient on the receiving end, who is also a nurse specialist in vascular access, with a UK anaesthetist/critical care physician with considerable experience in vascular access and managing complications plus medicolegal work. The speakers will discuss using ultrasound guidance to its full potential (including beyond the IJV, subclavian access) with the message it should be used in all cases assuming devices/expertise available in developed countries.

Other Side of the LineBeth Gore Sunday, September 22nd 10:15 AM – 11:15 AM

As the caregiver to Manny (4) who has a central line for a lifetime, the speaker will share compelling stories of heroic efforts of the vascular access that helped save his life multiple times. The talk will also illustrate that most people who handle his line have a lack of training on standards of care and protocols for vascular access procedures.

Stay for this closing session!

MEETING HIGHLIGHTSBuilding Clinical-Academic Vascular Access Research Partnerships that Work!Claire Rickard, RN, PhD Friday, September 20th 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Researching complex issues, such as vascular access device management, requires the strengths of many to evaluate and implement successful interventions. This session will detail the growth of a multidisciplinary, clinical-academic vascular access research group whose record in clinical trials, laboratory research, feasibility testing, and opportunities for mentoring between junior and experienced researchers, has culminated in $6.5 million in competitive funding, prestigious publications such as The Lancet, and opportunities to bridge the evidence-implementation gap. Vascular Access in the Dialysis Patient: How to Ensure the Best Access under the Most Challenging CircumstancesBradley Hill, MD and Peter Bream, MDFriday, September 20th 1:45 PM – 2:45 PM

Vascular specialists encounter a number of obstacles when they are asked to access patients with a long history of vascular access and/or comorbidities, especially patients on hemodialysis. This session will explore the current trends in dialysis access including peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis and will focus on understanding the various options when traditional routes are no longer an option.

GUIDED PERIPHERAL IV PROGRAM

IMPLEMENTATION OF AN

Announcing the AVA 2013 Scientifi c Pre-meeting WorkshopObtaining peripheral IV access can be increasingly diffi cult. The population of patients with challenging vasculature is growing and has the potential to increase material costs, reduce workfl ow and staff productivity, and reduce patient satisfaction when multiple attempts are required to gain access. Ultrasound is becoming the standard of care for central line vascular access, and offers several benefi ts that may help increase fi rst stick success rates over blind sticks when placing peripheral IVs. Including the ability to:

• Visualize vessel size, depth, and surrounding anatomy• Identify preferred insertion sites and areas to avoid• Cannulate vessels using real-time image guidance

The potential benefi ts of an Ultrasound Guided IV program are compelling, but the implementation is critical to your success. This 4-hour program will provide a practical, case based approach to understanding and implementing a successful ultrasound guided IV program in your facility.

Upon completion of this course, each attendee will:

Didactic• Understand published literature related to the success rate of landmark technique versus ultrasound guided insertion for IVs.• Be able to justify the addition of ultrasound guidance to their practice.• Learn how the use of ultrasound will help provide a higher level of confi dence in approaching any peripheral vascular access challenge.

Practicum• Identify the principles of ultrasound as they apply to peripheral vascular access.• Understand differences between different types of ultrasound systems available and be in a better position to determine which type of equipment will meet the needs of the facility• Understand topics that should be covered during hands-on training when implementing an ultrasound guided IV training program.

Implementation• Be able to write a policy and procedure related to the addition of ultrasound guidance for peripheral IV insertions• Learn how to select trainers/champions to kick off the program• Understand how to roll out an ultrasound- guided IV program at your facility
