The quote above applies not only to this great city hosting our 2013 meeting, but to the attendees joining us as well. I am always impressed by the incredibly gifted and talented clinicians who attend the AVA meetings and the way they support the specialty, and each other. The niche of vascular access is a unique one, practiced in all settings, and it is often seen as part of another specialty. It is here, at the Annual Scientific Meeting, that we can refocus our efforts and energies into defining our practice as a specialty in its own right, and perfecting the science that is vascular access.

Once again, the DTEAM has worked hard to present to you an agenda that will motivate, excite and challenge you. I have been honored to lead this committee for the last year. The quality, integrity and work ethic of this team has made my job so very easy. This year, in addition to a strong pediatric track supported by Pedivan, we have included sessions that will focus on the patient side of the line, challenging cases in dialysis and other central access, ways to move your scope of practice forward and improve your technology skills and savvy. We have included pre-meeting offerings that will help you to prepare for the VA-BC exam, make the transition from the adult to the pediatric world, learn about what bugs you, and get started in the specialty of vascular access.

We have brought back the roundtables this year by popular demand, and have incorporated both 30-minute and 1-hour breakout sessions to present valuable information and content. You won’t want to miss our video session moderated by Dr. Jack LeDonne. Once again this year, we will offer continuing education credit for our sessions to physicians and PA’s, nurses, radiology techs and respiratory therapists. Our faculty includes speakers from five different countries and various clinical roles, truly showcasing our international, multidisciplinary focus. Also based on your feedback, we have extended the hours of exhibit time so you can learn more about what is new in vascular access products.

I have always felt that the AVA members were my extended family, and attending the AVA Scientific Meeting often feels like part family reunion and part going back to school. The support that the AVA members share with one another is something not found in many other places, and Nashville, TN is a great place to showcase this. If this is your first AVA, I hope that you will join us for the First Time Attendees’ Session and reach out to the Ambassadors if you need help with anything during the meeting. Take this time to network with colleagues, learn about new things and most of all, have fun.

The speakers will discuss using ultrasound guidance to its full potential (including beyond the IJV, subclavian access) with the message it should be used in all cases assuming devices/expertise available in developed countries.

Successful businesswomen will share experiences in starting and growing a vascular access business in education and clinical practice including marketing, forecasting and innovation within a value-added business plan. An experienced researcher will discuss opportunities for participation in research conduct at various levels of participation and in partnership. A panel discussion will allow for participant interaction with the experts!

GUIDED PERIPHERAL IV PROGRAM

IMPLEMENTATION OF AN

Announcing the AVA 2013 Scientifi c Pre-meeting WorkshopObtaining peripheral IV access can be increasingly diffi cult. The population of patients with challenging vasculature is growing and has the potential to increase material costs, reduce workfl ow and staff productivity, and reduce patient satisfaction when multiple attempts are required to gain access. Ultrasound is becoming the standard of care for central line vascular access, and offers several benefi ts that may help increase fi rst stick success rates over blind sticks when placing peripheral IVs. Including the ability to:

• Visualize vessel size, depth, and surrounding anatomy• Identify preferred insertion sites and areas to avoid• Cannulate vessels using real-time image guidance

The potential benefi ts of an Ultrasound Guided IV program are compelling, but the implementation is critical to your success. This 4-hour program will provide a practical, case based approach to understanding and implementing a successful ultrasound guided IV program in your facility.

Upon completion of this course, each attendee will:

Didactic• Understand published literature related to the success rate of landmark technique versus ultrasound guided insertion for IVs.• Be able to justify the addition of ultrasound guidance to their practice.• Learn how the use of ultrasound will help provide a higher level of confi dence in approaching any peripheral vascular access challenge.

Practicum• Identify the principles of ultrasound as they apply to peripheral vascular access.• Understand differences between different types of ultrasound systems available and be in a better position to determine which type of equipment will meet the needs of the facility• Understand topics that should be covered during hands-on training when implementing an ultrasound guided IV training program.

Implementation• Be able to write a policy and procedure related to the addition of ultrasound guidance for peripheral IV insertions• Learn how to select trainers/champions to kick off the program• Understand how to roll out an ultrasound- guided IV program at your facility
