Dear Reader,

Despite economic upswings and downturns, we can look back on steady growth of the Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container

(FIBC) market in Europe. Indeed we look forward to a continuation of this trend thanks to the ingenuity and versatility of

FIBC as a product. As the number of industries employing FIBC increases, the variety of solutions to address the diverse

needs has grown. It is part of EFIBCA’s mission as the trade association of the FIBC industry in Europe to aid users in making

informed decisions and to promote the safe use of FIBC, whatever the application.

EFIBCA has a long history of championing the customer requirement for qualified information. Today, EFIBCA and

its Members aim to reach the end user though practical tools such as the EFIBCA booklet “Questions and Answers

Concerning the Use of Flexible Bulk Containers (FIBC), which covers frequently asked questions. Seeing the need for a

detailed handbook, EFIBCA has recently published the “FIBC User Guide: Guide for the Safe Use of Flexible Intermediate

Bulk Containers,” which was written together with EFIBCA Members and subject matter experts. It provides users with all

must-to-know information about FIBC like construction types, handling and disposal as well as specific knowledge e.g. on

FIBCs for foodstuff or dangerous goods.

EFIBCA and its Members are aware that customers expect not only high quality products and services from suppliers, but

also corporate environmental and ethical management. The EFIBCA-Q Quality Pledge and the EFIBCA Code of Conduct are

two corresponding programmes developed by EFIBCA for its members to promote these topics of growing importance

for doing business in Europe.

These and a range of other activities shown on the next pages demonstrate how EFIBCA is taking an active lead in the

industry. EFIBCA is hereby building trust and a reputation to the benefit of EFIBCA’s member companies, FIBC users and

the FIBC industry as a whole.

Thanks to all members for the continued support provided to EFIBCA. We welcome further FIBC manufacturers and

distributors to join us and speak with one voice in representing the interests of the FIBC industry in Europe.

Sincerely yours,

Roelof Veld, EFIBCA President

MeetingsEFIBCA Annual Meetings

Every year’s highlight is the EFIBCA Annual Meeting where

all members meet to exchange on current market topics

and discuss the association’s priority activities. The meet-

ing’s social event provides a forum for networking and ex-

change in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

EFIBCA Open Meetings and Dinner Receptions

EFIBCA’s Open Meetings and Dinner Receptions occur al-

ternatingly every 1.5 years and anyone working in the FIBC

industry is welcome to attend. At Open Meetings, experts

give insights into important issues affecting the industry,

ranging from new European legislation, to market over-

views, safety and quality, and corporate social responsibil-

ity. EFIBCA Dinner Receptions are conceived as the branch’s

regular kick-off to the packaging trade fair interpack. Both

are perfect platforms for information exchange and net-

working across the FIBC industry.

InitiativesEFIBCA Code of Conduct

More and more customers ex-

pect a clear and explicit com-

mitment towards worker rights

and ethical business conduct

from their suppliers. EFIBCA’s

code of conduct is a voluntary

agreement through which EFIBCA members bind them-

selves to observe globally recognized ethical standards as

well as competition and antitrust law. The EFIBCA Code of

Conduct is thus a meaningful way of building trust in cus-

tomer relations.

EFIBCA-Q Quality Pledge

The EFIBCA-Q Quality Pledge aims

to raise awareness amongst users

of FIBCs about quality and safety

standards relevant for different types

of FIBCs. FIBC manufacturers and

the distributors signing pledge commit to comply with all

specifications listed in the EFIBCA-Q Quality Criteria. Users of

FIBC are encouraged to engage with their FIBC supplier on

the EFIBCA-Q Quality Criteria and to include these criteria in

their supplier audits.

Scientific and Industry Studies

At the remit of its members, EFIBCA creates workgroups

and commissions studies to address concerns affecting

the industry. At a UV Resistance Workshop in 2014, EFIBCA

members voted to commission a correlation study compar-

ing actual weathering stress on FIBC over time to acceler-

ated laboratory testing as required by ISO 21898. EFIBCA

is funding the study which will deliver answers that can

improve quality testing, increase safety and reduce risks. A

team of EFIBCA members and external experts is oversee-

ing the project.

Qualified Information on Flexible Intermediate Bulk ContainersThe FIBC User Guide for the Safe Use of Flexible

Intermediate Bulk Containers

This comprehensive handbook aims at informing the FIBC

user in detail about design, safety, handling, transportation

and storage. Furthermore, it gives up-to-date guidance on

dangerous goods and food contact bags, correct marking,

and end of life considerations for FIBCs.

Questions and Answers Concerning the Use of Flexible

Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC)

This brochure is designed as a resource for end users of

FIBC on the key safety relevant aspects for filling, emptying,

transportation, stacking and storing of FIBCs. The brochure

is available in print or as a download in English and transla-

tions into other languages is planned.

Technical CompetenceEU Food Contact Regulation

The EU Food Contact Regulation (No 10/2011) unifies and

revises all former EU provisions on plastic materials de-

signed for food contact, including migration testing and

written declarations of compliance across the packaging

supply chain. EFIBCA helps its members to keep abreast of

the rigorous regulation, e.g. through a guidance document

and standard forms in several languages. Through its um-

brella organization, EuPC, EFIBCA also offers its members

participation in regulatory compliance training.

Transport of Dangerous Goods Regulation

EFIBCA holds a seat on the board of the International Con-

federation of Plastics Packaging Manufacturers (ICPP), which

represents the interests of the global plastic packaging in-

dustry at the UN Committee of Experts on the Transport of

Dangerous Goods, the responsible body for

issuing the UN Recommendations on

the Transport of Dangerous Goods,

better known as the “Orange Book”.

ServiceEFIBCA Newsletter

EFIBCA issues a biannual newsletter that informs about new

legislation, standards and technologies as well as FIBC mar-

ket news. The FIBC calendar gives an overview on upcom-

ing EFIBCA meetings and important international fairs and

conferences.

FIBC Import Statistics

EFIBCA regularly compiles and publishes the FIBC import

statistics. They inform about the value and volume of FIBC

imports to the European Union and give a ranking of the

top exporting countries to the EU.

EFIBCA Membership Certificates

EFIBCA issues annual membership certificates to all its

members. Members are also listed on EFIBCA’s homepage

• Location of head quarters and production sites:

• Burckhardt of Switzerland AG was founded in 1941 and

is specialized in the development and production of

pinned and drilled precision parts as well as machines

containing pinned parts. Our main areas of activity

are fibrillating, perforating and pinned precision parts.

We have recently upgraded our activity to include

perforating services/toll perforation. It is our goal to

improve customer’s competitive position by applying

our tailor-made solutions. A good example is the

Burckhardt fibrillating system which can be mounted

in most of the tape extrusion lines and for exchanging

the fibrillation bars the roller does not have to be

dismounted. For normal fibrillation we offer needle

bars with a pin density from 4 – 70 needles/cm. Now,

the latest development of the patented “Shark”-system

enables customers to fibrillate elastic/multi-oriented

tapes which could not be fibrillated until now.
