By Jordan Potsig-Simpson

Assistant Technical Manager (Lighting):

As the Assistant Technical Manager, I will be responsible for liaising with the Lighting Designer to find out what lighting equipment they need for their plan, ensuring that the plan is suitable to the facilities of the venue, while leading and overseeing a team of crew to help me source the relevant equipment required. Additional to this I will need to budget how much the costing of buying or hiring equipment is for the time we need it, while liaising and reporting back to the Technical Manager with my costing’s, so that they can then liaise and report back to the Stage Manager and Events Manger to see whether it is financially suitable in the event budget. I may also need to consider costing’s and arrangement of transportation for the equipment needed, for example, if it is large or a long distance away.

I will also be responsible (when all equipment is sourced) for overseeing and leading a team of crew while they rig the lighting design during the “get in”, while liaising with the lighting designer, to ensure that all of the equipment is rigged correctly, efficiently and safely, while also ensuring that all of the equipment functions correctly and to its highest standard. I will also need to (pre event day) ensure that all of the crew members rigging are all competent in doing so, by ensuring that they have all had a Health and Safety demonstration workshop. I will also need to provide a copy of the Lighting Plan to each member of the rigging crew, so that they are very clear to where everything needs to go.

Furthermore, during the “get out”, I will also need to oversee a team of crew, while they dismantle the Lighting Design from the performance space, ensuring that this is done safely and effectively. Also, in correspondence to the “get in” and the pre event sourcing of equipment, I will also be responsible for creating a checklist with all of the equipment on, ensuring that we have all of the equipment, and know where it is at all times. Another useful checklist that I will create, will be one for the riggers, to ensure that they understand where and what they have to do at all times, so that the event runs more smoothly , effectively and professional.

During all of this, I will need to liaise with the Technical Manager and report back to them my status during the event, so they are constantly aware what has been done, and what has yet to be done. The Technical Manager may also set deadlines for me, which I will be responsible for abiding by.
