More about Grace

Our church has served as a Christian anchor to historic Gloucester Courthouse for more than 140 years. Gloucester is located in coastal Virginia along the Southernmost portion of the Chesapeake Bay. We are a community that is surrounded by water, and it has shaped our history, our environment, and our lives.

In 2016, after considerable prayer and discernment, the congregation of First Presbyterian Church voted overwhelmingly to join ECO, and we are now Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. We asked God then, and we continue to ask God today, for His continued presence and ministry as a Presbyterian congregation.

Grace on Main’s welcoming and engaging environment is reflected through the implementation of fully supported and intentional ministry programs for our young parents and their families. The average attendance at our one worship Sunday service before the Covid-19 Pandemic was 186. Grace has more than 260 covenant partners.

Our Ministries.....

Raising Grace:Raising Grace was created to connect our families with young children (Infant through Elementary), and is proving to be successful in connecting our church across multiple generations. This active group regularly holds fellowship/social and community service functions with a common goal of teaching our children about Christ.

Youth on Main:Open to Middle and High School, our youth group offers a place for youth to make friends, learn, and have fun. It’s also a place where they can be equipped to share the good news of Jesus with their peers.

Children’s Church/Music:Grace on Main offers Children’s Church and Children’s Music for our Preschool and Elementary age children. These exciting offerings engage our children in Christ and has them begging their parents to come to church on Sundays.

Weekly Bible Study:Grace offers midweek Bible Study, along with our Hurried Family Dinner, throughout the school year. Families can come together to enjoy a meal, followed by a Bible Study session for all ages. We recently completed a year long study of The Story.

Outreach:Movie Nights:Who doesn’t love watching a movie under the stars? Several times a year Grace on Main hosts a Movie Night. Community neighbors set up chairs, spread their blankets on the church lawn and enjoy a family movie with popcorn and refreshments.


Our Ministries.....Halloween on Main Street:Being located on Main Street of a charming downtown setting provides our church with unique opportunities. Each year the church invites trick or treaters for a little fellowship. Instead of handing out treats, Grace on Main hands out hotdogs and shares the gospel.

Vacation Bible School:Grace on Main offers one of only a few daytime VBS opportunities in Gloucester County and one that has grown dramatically, doubling in enrollment over the last two years.We offer a comprehensive learning experience for preschoolers through middle schoolers where students can learn about God’s word in a comfortable, interactive, and FUN environment! All are welcome!

Centershot:Centershot Ministries is a non-denominational youth outreach program that shares the Gospel of Jesus using the life-skills of Archery.

Rise Against Hunger:Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food and other aid to people in developing nations. One day a year covenant partners come together on Saturday morning and pack 10,000 meals.

Botetourt Elementary School:Grace on Main has a strong partnership with Botetourt Elementary School located just a couple of blocks up Main Street. Volunteers from Grace have formed tutoring teams providing direct support to teachers and students in the classroom. Some of us have enjoyed being a part of the Lunch Buddy program where joining an elementary student for lunch each week allows us to know, support and mentor kids in our community. We support Botetourt Elementary in various ways throughout the year including Teacher Appreciation events, courthouse landscaping projects, and much more!


Assistant Pastor Opportunity

Overview

The mission of the Assistant Pastor of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church is to implement the values and mission of our church with a focus on identifying and coordinating an intergenerational vision for all youth, college age, young adult and family ministries. In partnership with the Senior Pastor, the Director of Christian Education, the Director of Children’s Ministries, and the Christian Growth Committee, the Assistant Pastor will develop a relational strategy of ministry that builds bridges in all areas of ministry at Grace. A key aspect of this position is to recruit volunteers, build teams, and cultivate cohesiveness within the teams. To this end, the Assistant Pastor must mentor an intergenerational gospel-centered leadership team to invest in the ministries.

Responsibilities

1. Participate and lead the study of God’s word.2. Develop, oversee and coordinate ministries and outreaches of Grace as they relate to youth, young adults, and young families.3. Work closely with the Senior Pastor, Director of Christian Education, Director of Children’s Ministries, and the Christian Growth Committee to ensure inter-ministry coordination and communication.4. Work alongside the Director of Christian Education and Director of Children’s Ministries to partner with families to raise their children to become disciples.5. Build strategic relationships with local schools, organizations, and businesses to reach students and families in our community.6. Heavily invest in the student and family relationships- “doing life” with these individuals, learning who they are, where they are, and going where they go, while casting a compelling vision of God’s plan in their lives.7. Preach multiple times a year in coordination with the Senior Pastor.8. Attend Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church services, ensuring availability for any needs that arise and to model worship.9. Utilize curriculum provided by/approved by the Director of Christian Education.10. Attend committee and staff meetings as scheduled.

This full-time position will report to the Senior Pastor and is available to be filled immediately. Location.....About the Area

With a courthouse square dating back to the late 1600s, a statue commemorating the legacy of Pocahontas, and a historic inn once owned by George Washington’s grandparents, Gloucester boasts many areas of historical importance. Gloucester Point served as a pivotal site in the Revolutionary War and was the location of the Battle of the Hook, an event ultimately leading to the British surrender. Gloucester is just across the river from Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown, known as the area’s Historic Triangle.

Located on Virginia’s beautiful Middle Peninsula, Gloucester is home to watermen and water enthusiasts. With five rivers surrounding the county, there is no shortage of boating, fishing, crabbing, and the like. Gloucester is also home to Beaver Dam Park, which is perfect for any lover of the outdoors. The park contains miles of well-maintained hiking trails, a launch ramp, canoe rentals, picnic areas, and a playground.

Gloucester is known as the “Daffodil Capital of America.” The Daffodil Festival, held the first weekend of April each year, celebrates the heritage of the daffodil and the community. People come from all over to enjoy the parade, hear live music, see the crowning of the Daffodil Queen, and visit the spectacular blooms and arrangements on display at the Daffodil Show.

Gloucester Main Street is a one-stop shop for dining, retail, art, and business. Many of the restaurants carry fresh local seafood, the shops are full of unique gifts and clothing, and the street itself is perfect for an afternoon stroll. The charm and history of Gloucester make it a welcoming place with plenty to do.
