SOUTH METRO FIRE RESCUE

South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) provides

preparedness, prevention, mitigation, and

emergency response services to approximately

203,500 residents and many thousands more

who come into our communities to work and

play. We protect 179 square miles in Douglas

and Arapahoe counties. SMFR serves the cities

of Castle Pines, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village,

Foxfield, Greenwood Village, Lone Tree, and

Parker, as well as Castle Pines Village, Louviers,

Centennial Airport, the Denver Tech Center,

Inverness and Meridian Office Parks, and

portions of the City of Aurora and

unincorporated Arapahoe and Douglas

counties.

OPERATIONS DIVISION

The Operations Division is the largest division of

the Fire District. The Assistant Chief of

Operations oversees Emergency Medical

Services (EMS), as well as district chiefs, shift

commanders, battalion chiefs (BCs), and 294

line personnel staffing 17 fire stations.

Annually, SMFR responds to almost 19,000

emergency incidents inside and outside our

district.

Operations personnel are well-trained and have

the resources needed to provide exemplary

service. Services provided by SMFR include

firefighting, basic and advanced emergency

medical service and ambulance transport,

vehicle rescue / extrication, technical rescue,

hazardous materials, water rescue, wildland

fires, urban search and rescue (USAR), aircraft

rescue, and SWAT medic responses. Training

and equipment are very important, particularly

in the District’s diverse service area, which

includes the Tech Center and its high rise

buildings, rural neighborhoods with forest and

trails, Centennial Airport, and the Cherry Creek

State Park.

THE POSITION

The Assistant Chief of Operations is responsible

for the management and supervision of all

assigned battalions and bureaus; as well as their

operations and personnel, including district

chief, shift commanders, battalion chiefs and

bureau chiefs. As part of the executive team,

he/she may represent the Fire Chief or the

District in outside activities to include meetings

with the public, other public safety

departments, or other jurisdictions and will act

on behalf of the Fire Chief as necessary.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be a well-regarded fire service professional with at least four years supervisory experience and have attained a chief officer rank. He/she will be a forward thinking leader in an industry faced with major change, and yet respectful of our history and how its legacy fits with where the District and community is today. This high-energy individual will have the capacity to be a global thinker, and flexible in considering different viewpoints while possessing the ability to get objectives accomplished and solutions implemented.

The individual selected will display an agile leadership style that is suitable for a multigenerational and diverse workforce. A team-oriented professional, he/she will have a history of working well with peers and contributing as an equal partner devoted to organizational over individual success. While this individual will be responsible for the daily operations of the department, he/she will be a bridge builder to other divisions, functional areas, and external organizations. The Ops Chief will possess the capacity to develop meaningful relationships grounded in trust, compassion and integrity. The ideal candidate will have a high level of emotional intelligence. They will be self-aware and introspective, constantly promoting the significance of continuous learning, improvement and professional development. The ability to engender trust and cohesiveness in small and large settings will be critical. Expected to be a role model in the profession, the ideal candidate will have proven success promoting high standards and holding people accountable to such standards. He/she will have a history of establishing clear expectations and well-defined rules of engagement that help to shape a culture necessary for a highly respected modern organization. As the Operations Chief of a large and diverse service area, this leader will be expected to be knowledgeable regarding regional initiatives aimed at improving fire and emergency medical response effectiveness and efficiency. He/she should be well-versed in current initiatives and philosophies in deployment strategies, modern tactics, personnel safety, and other fire and medical industry trends.

The individual selected will be an effective communicator with outstanding interpersonal skills, who inclusively fosters constructive two-way communications. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience and a sophisticated understanding of effective labor/management relations along with the development of leadership and specific skill-sets needed for the future of the organization. The Operations Chief will be community oriented and supportive of the department’s visibility and commitment to the community. He/she will have the fortitude to be a strong voice for the department and strengthening SMFR’s position as an influential entity at the regional, state and federal levels. SMFR is counted on to take leadership roles and to be actively engaged in regional issues and initiatives. An understanding of operations and ways to prevent and mitigate emergencies will be expected. Experience in effectively managing large budgets will be considered favorably. The ideal candidate will exhibit outstanding analytical abilities along with the ability to make or recommend sound business decisions based on thorough research, analysis, analytics and the exploration of numerous alternatives. EXPERIENCE AND

EDUCATION

Master’s Degree by 12-31-2016; or

possess NFA Executive Fire Officer and

CPSE Chief Fire Officer Designation by

12-31-2016 and complete a Master’s

Degree by 12-31-2018

Minimum of ten (10) years of fire

service experience in an operations

capacity

Currently hold the position of Bureau

Chief, Bureau Head, Battalion Chief or

Shift Commander/District Chief

Minimum of four (4) years supervisory

experience in the fire service

Executive Fire Officer & Chief Fire

Officer Designation desired

An equivalent combination of education and

experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above

may be considered.

COMPENSATION &

BENEFITS

The annual salary for the Operations Chief will

be $149,579.00/annually. In addition, SMFR

offers a rich benefit package that includes:
