STORYLINES

AWARD-WINNING PERFORMANCESHBU has earned a Southland Conference Player of the Week award each of the last four weeks, and had two for three-straight weeks. Senior wide receiver Gamar Girdy Brito earned the most recent award as Special Teams Player of the Week, following the Huskies’ setback to UIW on Oct. 5. After a 68-31 victory over Texas Southern on Sept. 28, junior quarter-back was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week and STAST FCS National Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman kicker Gino Garcia earned his second-straight Special Teams Player of the Week award. Following the 48-21 win over Northwestern State on Sept. 21, sophomore linebacker Brennan Young was named SLC Defensive Play-er of the Week and Garcia claimed his first Special Teams Player of the Week. Following a 53-52 victory over South Dakota on Sept. 14, Zappe was named Offensive Player of the Week and senior defensive end Andre Walker was the Defensive Player of the Week. Junior wide receiver Ben Ratzlaff was the College Sports Madness Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week and earned Jesse Palmer’s “Helmet Sticker” on ESPN’s College Football Final and Brito was the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week.

UNIQUE FEATSenior wide receiver/kickoff returner Gamar Girdy Brito was named the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 16. In ad-dition, junior quarterback Bailey Zappe earned honorable mention for Offensive Player of the Week, senior defensive end Andre Walker earned honorable mention for Defensive Player of the Week and safety Tra Fluel-len earned honorable mention for Freshman of the Week. It marks the first time in the history of the awards a program has had a respresenta-tive in all four categories in the same week.

HUSKIES OFFENSE AMONG NATIONAL LEADERSHBU leads the FCS in scoring offense (49.5), leads in first downs (184) and passing yards per game (385.7 yards/game). Junior quarterback Bailey Zappe leads the nation with 2,207 passing yards and 24 passing touch-downs and 33.17 completions per game, while ranking fourth in com-pletion percentage (71.6) and 13th in passing efficiency (160.3). DR. DRESenior defensive end Andre Walker has a 3.8 GPA as a biochemistry and molecular biology major, is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-Southland Conference selection. Walker leads the nation with 9.5 sacks and totaled 62 yards lost on those sacks. He set the HBU single-game record with four sacks, one shy of the Southland Conference record, in a 53-52 victory over South Dakota on Sept. 14. Walker has al-ready set the Huskies’ single-season record this year and has extended his career school record to 21.0.

CRACKING THE TOP 25HBU made it into the AFCA Coaches Poll on Sept. 30, earning the pro-gram’s first-ever top 25 ranking, coming in tied for 25th. The Huskies re-ceived 86 votes in the STATS FCS Top 25, five spots outside of the top 25. The week of Sept. 16, HBU began receiving votes in both national Top 25 polls for the first time in program history.

DYNAMIC DUOIn the Sept. 21 victory over Northwestern State, sophomore running back Ean Beek rushed for 131 yards, the seventh-most in school history, while junior running back Dreshawn Minnieweather ran for 112 yards, marking the second time in program history multiple running backs have rushed for at least 100 yards in the same game. Beek posted his first career 100-yard peformance, while Minnieweather has the most in school history with five of the 13. Minnieweather and junior running back LaDarius Dickens each rushed for more than 100 yards against Sam Houston State on Nov. 17, 2018.

SPREADING THE WEALTHHBU had multiple 100-plus yard receivers for the first time in school his-tory in a 53-52 victory over South Dakota on Sept. 14. The Huskies had three separate receivers achieve the milestone, led by junior Ben Ratzlaff setting all three school records with 12 catchs for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Jerreth Sterns had 10 catches for 114 yards and senior Gamar Girdy Brito made nine catches for 103 yards. Ratzlaff and Sterns each had more than 100 yards against Texas Southern on Sept. 28 as well. This season, 10 different HBU receivers have caught a touch-down.

PRESEASON ACCOLADESJunior linebacker Caleb Johnson, senior defensive end Andre Walker and sophomore wide receiver Jerreth Sterns were named to the Southland Preseason All-Conference Team. In addition, junior LaDarius Dickens joined the trio on Phil Steele’s Preseason All-Southland Team as a kick returner.

VETERAN PRESENCEThe Huskies return 46 letterwinners, including 17 starters, nine on of-fense and eight on defense. Junior quarterback Bailey Zappe has start-ed 22 of 23 games during his HBU career and holds nearly every career, single-season and single-game passing record. Senior center Cody Hooks started all 22 games the first two years of his Huskies career and senior guards Tuita and Hekoti Chapman and sophomore wide recceiver Jerreth Sterns started all 11 games in their first season at HBU in 2018. On de-fense, senior defensive end Andre Walker has started all 34 games in his career. He is joined by fourth-year junior linebacker Caleb Johnson.

TAPPING INTO TRANSFERS HBU added several transfers who are making an immediate impact in 2019. Wide receiver Ben Ratzlaff has made 32 catches for 470 yards and six touchdowns. Three have started on the offensive line -- Dan Wilkins, Doro Omerhi and Nathan Beveridge, joining previous transfers Cody Hooks and Tuita Chapman. On defense, Delon Smith has started at cor-nerback. The Huskies also added punter Blake Patterson, who handles kickoff and holding duties as well. Previous transfers on the depth chart include wide receivers Terry Tillmon, Jeremy Smith and offensive line-man Hekoti Chapman, nose guard Emmanuel Mann, defensive end Car-ter Couch, linebacker Elijah Quarles, and defensive backs Alfred King and Malik Johnson.

ELDER STATESMAN Head coach Vic Shealy is the longest-tenured head coach in the South-land Conference and will serve as the head coach in the 100th game of his career Saturday against South Dakota.
