EU Regulation

PRM (Passenger with Reduced Mobility) – a passenger with reduced ability to move or any person whose ability to move when using vehicles is limited due to a physical (sensory or motor, permanent or temporary) disability or advanced age and whose condition requires sufficient attention and adjustment of the generally available services to this person’s needs.

If you are a PRM passenger, you have the same opportunities to enjoy air travel as everybody else.

In the EU Member States your rights are protected under Regulation (EU) No. 1107/2006. It specifies what assistance is provided by an airport and an airline and points out that such assistance must be rendered free of charge.

Riga International Airport complies with the Regulation ensuring high-quality services both to departing and arriving PRM passengers.

The airport perceives every passenger with reduced mobility as a unique person with various individual requirements and the need for additional services. Riga International Airport pledges to provide PRM passengers with services tailored for their needs rendered with courtesy and reverence, without discrimination, and with due respect for the person’s desire to enjoy maximum independence.

Journey to and from the Airport• The buses of city bus route No. 22 accommodate passengers in wheelchairs; the last bus leaves the airport at 00:05 (on week days) and at 23:40 (on weekends).

• The bus stop on the route from the centre of Riga to the airport is in front of the check-in area of the terminal.

• The bus stop on the route: Airport – City Centre is opposite the terminal, behind Car Park P1.

• All the drivers of taxis operating at Riga International Airport are trained to transport PRM passengers and their wheelchairs, which can be carried in the boot of the taxi. A special vehicle (minibus) for PRM passengers travelling in wheelchairs is provided by the taxi company AS “Rīgas Taksometru parks”. This special minibus should be booked at least 2 hours in advance by calling 8383. Before coming to the airport, please enquire about this service at the taxi company of your choice.

• If you come to the airport by taxi, you can get off directly in front of the check-in area of the terminal.

• If you need a taxi from the airport to the city, you can find them in front of Arrivals Sector E in Car Park P1.

• Two PRM car parking places (waiting time – 1 hour*) are located at the terminal opposite the check-in area.

• Paid Car Park P1 (short-term) is located in front of the terminal with four places allotted for PRM cars.

• In the paid long-term Car Park P3 five places are allotted for PRM cars.

Please be sure to remember, which car park you have left your car in!

In its territory, the airport provides call points for arriving and departing passengers in following places:

• in Car Park P1 (short-term) on the ground level – at the taxi stops near the lift

• in Car Park P3 (long-term) – at the car park entrance in the operator’s office.

* Upon arrival at the terminal, passengers contact the Information desk in the Departures Hall, if assistance is required from this point.

Booking of the ServiceThe PRM passenger should book the service at least 48 hours prior to the departure of his/her flight in order to secure appropriate assistance, including special equipment.

If you have booked your flight at the last minute, please apply for the PRM service at the airport:

• at the Information desk in the check-in hall, immediately upon your arrival in the airport,

• at the call points of car parks P1, P3,

• by e-mail to the address: [email protected].

Our staff will do the utmost to provide you with the necessary service. However, if such services are requested at the last minute, the airport cannot guarantee the same quality as would definitely be provided, if booked beforehand.

Arrival and Departure Call Points

DeparturesPRM Support ServiceIf the necessary assistance is booked along with the flight ticket, the airline will inform the airport about your requirements. If the ticket is booked at the last minute, the Information Desk staff will communicate with the PRM Support Service.

The PRM Support Service staff will help you to check in for the flight, check in your baggage and go through security screening. If necessary, the PRM Service staff will accompany you to the gate or the aircraft and even to your seat on board the aircraft.

In the case of necessity special equipment will be used for boarding the aircraft.

VIP CentreThe reconstructed and expanded VIP Centre has improved and upgraded the services essential for PRM passengers. There are ramps, low thresholds, appropriate toilet rooms and other conveniences for passengers with reduced mobility.

Security CheckSecurity screening in Riga Airport is obligatory for all the passengers, and it is especially important if you use special equipment for moving or if you carry medications.

All vehicles, including wheelchairs, are scrupulously checked for security reasons. You can minimise the possible discomfort during the security check by warning the staff beforehand about your special needs.

You may also be checked physically. If due to your disability you wish to be examined discreetly, you can request to be taken to a separate check room.

In Riga Airport you may be requested to sit on another chair while your wheelchair is being checked. It is the duty of the security staff to check every item, including a wheelchair, with special care. The checks are performed very carefully and correctly, and afterwards the staff will help you to put your belongings back in the same order as before.

Currently there is a restriction on carrying liquids on board with a volume up to 100 ml allowed in one container, and all the separate units must be inserted in a zip-lock transparent plastic 1-litre bag. You are allowed to carry necessary medications exceeding 100 ml on board in your hand bag, subject to prior permission from the airline and the airport of departure, complete with an explanatory document (e.g. your doctor’s letter or a prescription).

ArrivalThe carrier must warn the airport PRM Support Service about the passengers on board who will need assistance upon arrival.

The PRM service staff will meet you at the aircraft door in order to help you with passport control (if applicable), baggage reclaiming and finding your meeters and greeters, and, if necessary, with getting to any point of your further travel (a bus stop, car park, taxi stop in the airport territory).

In order to assist you in disembarkation from the aircraft, the PRM Service staff may use special equipment.

On Board the AircraftYou will not be allowed to use your wheelchair on board the aircraft because the aisles between the seats are too narrow. You can travel to the aircraft by wheelchair, and the airport PRM staff will use special equipment to help you get to your seat and get off the aircraft upon arrival.
