Assignments Overview

The assignments are the heart of this course. Most of what you learn will come from the process of carrying them out as well as the discussion we'll have in class related to them.

Read them very carefully to be sure you understand all the requirements.ASK in class if you don't understand something

Look at the submission requirements carefully - for most team assignments each person must submit individually AND one member must submit for the team to the URL database.

Course Overview - A 1

Purpose

The intent of this assignment is to start you thinking in the manner we ask in this course, and to use the tools that will be important throughout the next six months.

In essence, you're to read the syllabus, assignments and related material, reflect on it, and answer some questions based on that material as well as what we did in class.

To do so you'll have to use a web page creation tool and post the results on a web page. We will demonstrate the basics of how to use them in class if necessary.

Details

As begun in class, you are to review the entire AE-390 web site. You are then to create your own web-page which answers the questions embodied in the grading criteria. You will mount that web page on a web server of your choice (If you don't use Google Sites I recommend Dunx1 since all students have accounts on it) for viewing via the web and submit the URL to the assignments database. At the next meeting of the class students will review other's pages and evaluate them.

Read this assignment first, particularly the criteria below since they will determine the grade for the assignment. Note that this assignment will be the prototype for all the others in the course. Read the rest of the class materials on the AE-390 web site. This is the material which explains what you'll be doing for the rest of this term. The criteria for this assignment assume that you have read that material.

Create a web page answering the questions either explicitly or implicitly contained in the grading criteria.

Some students have found Powerpoint or MS Publisher very helpful, but Powerpoint can become limiting in the amount of material you can include. Most are now using Google Sites.

Note that it is sufficient to create a single web page although more experienced or ambitious students may complete linked pages if they desire. If you choose to create linked pages (or include graphics) be sure to use "local references" so that the pages may be moved to another location.

Drexel's Office of Information Resources and Technology has excellent tutorials on web page creation as well as some templates.

Mount the work by the deadline onto the web server of your choice.

You should be able to work directly into your "public_html" folder if you use Dunx1. We can discuss this in class.

See the AE Resources Page for help with web page creation.

Be sure to check the page using a browser to ensure that everything works as you expect it. The biggest difficulty is usually that graphics aren't incorporated into the proper directory/folder when uploading.

Enter the URL with the other necessary information into the online Submissions database - available from the course home page. Be sure to do so by pasting the URL - not typing it.

Check that it works by searching and clicking the link.

Also, submit the URL into VistaBB

Come to class on next time prepared to review other people's work and make comments on it.

Teamwork

This project is to be completed individually.

You are, however to look ahead to the future assignments in which teamwork is required and discuss how you will do that effecitvely, using explicit reference to the teamwork website.

Deliverables

You are to deliver a web site which addresses the assignment, ready to be viewed by the class and instructor. Each site should meet the following requirements.

Web page or web site.

Mount the Web Page/site on a publicly connected server - Google Sites or Dunx1 are recommended.

Submission of web site URL in online database AND to Vista Blackboard (VBB).

Web Page Identification Requirements

Your assignment site should have at least the following information on it:

The specifics defined by the assignment details and grading criteria.Course Name

Your name (yes people have forgotten that)

Assignment titleDate

Grading Criteria

The following will be be used to assess your success in meeting the project's requirements. Note that each project will be "weighted" as shown on the grading to determine the overall term grade.

General advice - BE SPECIFIC, you'll only get an average grade if you give generalities without specific numbers, details, examples to back up your generality.

A1a -BIM - Creating a Building in Revit Intelligent Building

Overview Details Teamwork Deliverables Grading

Overview

The intent is to give you a taste of working with a BIM tool AutoDesk's Revit (you may use Bentley System's equivalent as an option if you choose, but I cannot help much).

You'll create a sample building taking advantage of a few of the BIM capabilities of the software.

For newcomers we'll give step-by-step instructions, but experienced users there's an option. The end-product will be a single drawing incorporating multiple "views" of your project

You'll write some conclusions and present your project in class.

Getting Revit for Yourself

If you wish to work at home and have a computer (PC) with sufficient horsepower you can download Revit for free (while a student) at the Autdesk Students Site. You will need:

To register on the site providing proof that you're a student

Be prepared for a VERY big download - multiple Gigs if I remember correctlyNote that we're using Revit Architecture in this class. A comparison between the three versions of Revit (for 2009 version) is available from MasterGraphics

Details

Novice Revit UsersFollow the instructions on the associated page to create a simple, single-story building model and associated "sheet".

Note that the videos and instructions are based on Revit-2010 - There may be menu differences in Revit-2011

Note that there are videos that demonstrate it linked form the page so that you don't have to remember everything.

Your continuous wall is = 10 x the number of letters of your last name (e.g. Mitchell -> 8x10 = 80') - a dimension and a note showing the computation indicate this on the "sheet"

Note that you are welcome to create a more complex building than the one shown, but please be sure to create the "sheet" that shows multiple views.

When you are done write a single page (300-500 words) addressing the following questions

What worked well in following the instructions?

What problems did you have - with the program and the instructions? How does this program differ from Autocad (or Microstation)?

Do you see signficant advantages or disadvantages for using it?

Exerienced Revit UsersYou are welcome to follow the "Novice" requirements. We suggest however that you do the following:

Develop a model with an output "sheet" that includes the following.

A building model that you build for this assignment - not something from CoOp work or a prior class.

A new aspect of Revit that you haven't explored before - e.g. structural column info or a rendered view.

Updated: 9/21/10

A Major Building - A2

Purpose

This assignment has three purposes. It:

Introduces you to an innovative building.1.

Asks you to think in detail about three of the major systems in a building: Architecture; Structure; HVAC

2.

(Re) introduces you to a tool used during conceptual design - Sketchup3.

As a team you're asked to find a Sketchup model of a significant contemporary building and analyze it visually, with calculations, and in writing by preparing "diagrams" appropriate for several audiences and answering questions about the building.

Web Page

Document your work by creating a single web page or site for the work of your team.

Details

As indicated above the essence of this problem is to examine and present a major existing building using the Sketchup model as the starting point for your analysis. Ideally you'll use that same model to create diagrams (drawings) of the building appropriate for different audiences. You may, however, prepare the diagrams independently if you choose, including reusing and enhancing ones that you find on the web or in books. Finally you'll analyze what you've done.

The steps you are to follow are therefore:

1) Research the building you've chosen as a team documenting at the least the following about it:

First you need to select a building. The recommended choices are in this spreadsheet that lists all the architects in the two books that are located in the CadLab - "Architecture Now! 6", and "Digital Architecture". During the first class your team will sign up for a building after checking that a model that you can use exists in Google Earth Warehouse, or Great Buildings Online. You're welcome to use other sources as well. We may approve substitute architects/buildings provided they are signficant contemporary works. DO NOT use the same buildings that were used last year - find new ones.

You will need to document the following about your building in your web page.

Page 11 of 50Assignments

2) Download a Sketchup building Model in Google Earth Warehouse.

Almost all models that you'll find show the exterior only. You'll need to make assumptions about the interior systems to complete the rest of the assignment

Note that you are free to create your own model or use other programs such as Revit (an obvious choice since you'll be working simultaneously on a Revit project) if you choose. Sketchup is identified because there are so many models available in the Warehouse.

See the Google Sketchup Tutorials for suggestions on how to learn and use SketchUp.

3) Analyze and Describe the Architecture System of the building

Drawings/Diagrams

Document the building with at least the following drawings. You may extract them from sketchup or use other sources (which are likely to be much more detailed).

Plan at first floor level

Two perpendicular building sections

Two building elevationsAerial perspective view(s) chosen to illustrate the unique aspects of the building

Calculations

Calculate or indicate at least the following relevant building characteristics, being explicit about the assumptions.

Number of occupants - assume 200SF/Occupant unless you get better information

Building elevation area in each major direction (usually N,E,S,W)

Analysis and Description

Analyze the architectural system using the results of your calculations answering the following questions - recognizing that some answers may be speculation.

How did the site of the building affect its form?

How does the form of the building affect its structural system?

How does the form and location of the building affect its HVAC system?

4) Analyze and Describe the Structural System of the building

Drawings/Diagrams

Document the building's structural system with at least the following drawings. You may use those from the architecture section as bases or use other sources (which are likely to be much more detailed). You'll probably want to use a 2D drawing tool such as paint.net or Inkscape to draw over the building plans or sections.

Show how the vertical loads are taken to the ground

Show how the horizontal loads are resisted This one may have to be speculative - be sure to discuss it in class.

Calculations

Calculate the following using either real values if you can find them or the assumptions given. Ask in class if you need further information.

Note that in a real project, including Senior Design, you'd need to use exact numbers for the specific material or the code requirement. Look at your textbooks for materials information and the relevant code (usually IBC in the US - MadCad database for it and other codes. These are just to help you start develop your "intution" about typical numbers.

Page 14: Assignments

Maximum wind speed of 90mph = 21PSF

Note that windspeed varies greatly with location and with other factors. What's given here is a typical number for Philadelphia. In Miami the speed would be 140mph which would produce a pressure of 50PSF - more than double Philadelphia.

Analysis and Description

Describe the structural system using the results of your calculations to answer the following questions - recognizing that some answers may be speculation.

What are the relative magnitudes of the total Dead, Live and Horizontal loads and what implications do these have for the structure of the building?Looking at the foundation load what do you think it means for the type of foundation to be used, and what additional information would you need?Would this be an easy or a difficult building for which to develop the structural calculations (assuming you'd already completed the senior year structural sequence)? Why?

5) Analyze and Describe the HVAC System of the building

Drawings/Diagrams

Document the building's HVAC (mechanical) system with at least the following drawings. You may use those from the architecture section as bases or use other sources (which are likely to be much more detailed). You'll probably want to use a 2D drawing tool such as paint.net or Inkscape to draw over the building plans or sections.

Building fenestration - emphasizing the percentage of the building walls (and roof) through which the sun can shine.Show how the building is heated and cooled with a single-line diagram

This one may have to be speculative - be sure to discuss it in class.

Calculations

Calculate the following using either real values if you can find them or the assumptions given. Ask in class if you need further information.

Heat load out of building in cold winter night - no occupants or lights - in BTU/Hr

use the following assumptions (document them)

average nighttime winter temperature for your building's location

Your assumption about the length of the cooling season at that nighttime temperature

R-value of wall material = 10 ft²·°F·h/Btu.R-value of roof material = 30 ft²·°F·h/Btu.

R value of glass = 2 ft²·°F·h/Btu.

HVAC air flow and leakage are neglected - not realistic, but we're simplifying

Convert this number to gallons/hour of heating oil - assume 120,000 BTU/Gallon delivered

Calculate the heating cost per year assuming $2/gallon of heating oil

Building heating load that must be dealt with by the cooling system Calculate

The Hourly heat load in BTU/HR, Tons of HVAC, Watts

The daily heat load

Remember that that the sun moves

Make your assumptions about how to complete this calculation explicit

Estimate the season=annual cost to cool this building using these assumptions

Convert that to cost/SF as wellAssumptions in the absence of better numbers

Analysis and Description

Describe the HVAC system using the results of your calculations to answer the following questions - recognizing that some answers may be speculation.

What are the relative magnitudes of the total hourly heating and cooling loads?

What are the relative costs of heating and cooling the building?Would this be an easy or a difficult building for which to develop the HVAC calculations (assuming you'd already completed the senior year HVAC courses)? Why?

6) Evaluate What you accomplished by answering the following questions

Expectations vs results

Each individual should describe what you expected at the start of the assignment and what you believe at the end of the assignment, with an emphasis on the system that you analyzed. Identify who you are and your system.Describe what you learned from performing this analysis

System Interaction

As a group comment on what you see as the interactions and dependencies between the different systems.

Group ProcessAs a group describe the issues you faced in completing this assignment

What were the major problems?

How did you check that your results "made sense" for each system?

7) Create a web page/site combining all your results

The goal is that the site should appear to be the work of a single person although it will combine the work of all members of the team.

Submit the URL for your website two places

In the VistaBB assignment submission slot - so we can give you a grade. In the assignment database

EACH PERSON Submit the teamwork evaluation assignment in VistaBB.

8) Timing of Submission

You are to make your submissions by the start of your section's class (3:00 for Section-2, 5:00 for section 501)

Note that for technical reasons VistaBB is set to automatically mark assignments "late" only for the later section for each assignment. We can, however, check the actual times to ensure that all students turned their assignments in on time.

Teamwork

You are welcome to consult with your classmates for suggestions - short of direct copying. The grading is on an absolute scale so mutual assistance can only help each group.

Teams for this Assignment - Building PageIn class you'll select the building that you'll be working on. Once you've done so you'll put your names next to that building - the goal being that we know who is analyzing what system and that we don't have more than one team studying a given building.

At the end of the project, as noted above, submit an evaluation of your team's performance using the assignment in VistaBB. Do so with EACH PERSON submitting their own teamwork evaluation.

Structures Variety - A3

Purpose

The intent of this exercise is to build your familiarity with the variety of structural systems and also to refine your familiarity with the system concept.

You are to explore an assigned structural system in as great a depth as possible and explain it to your peers,. applying the definition of a system that we agreed upon in class. Each group will explore a different structural system so we get as great a range of systems as possible.

Details

You are to create web page(s) addressing your assigned structural systems. You are to consider it as a system with subsystems. Comment on their characteristics, with particular emphasis on their applicability in different design situations. Using material gathered from the text and other reference sources is entirely appropriate, but you must annotate and organize it.

Number of Systems

You will address a single system, but will be expected to learn from the other groups about their systems.

Structural System Completeness

Be sure that the system description is complete. That means that you must consider how all loads (both horizontal and vertical) are carried down into the ground. To do so you will need to address how rooves and floors are created with your system as well as foundation systems.

Content of Web Pages

The web pages should present the diagrams you have assembled or created and comment on them. Using at least the following criteria:

Structures Selection

Purpose

The selection Process - Background

One of the most important tasks you'll have in your professional life is making decisions about the "right" system to use for a particular building. When you start you typically know only that there is a desire for a building with particular use and spatial characteristics. It is your job to decide which of the many possible structural systems will meet the service requirements in an economical manner. There isn't any absolute way to make a decision because there are so many more variables than can be simultaneously optimized. Instead one has to learn a process of making a wise selection. This process typically involves drawing on prior experience ("what did we do last time?"), cost measures, engineering analysis and published information.

Page 29 of 50Assignments

9/22/2010https://learning.dcollege.net/webct/urw/lc1508742634121.tp1530342792081/selectItemsFo...

Page 30: Assignments

In AE-390 we emphasize developing understanding and skill at this selection process. This is the first exercise in which we ask you to address it. In a later assignment (HVAC Selection) we'll ask you to take the process to the next stage and create a "criteria matrix" which allows you to pick the "best" solution by answering a set of questions. The final assignment of this term will ask you to understand how the designers of a Drexel building probably made their selection. And then next term you'll have the chance to use the process in action by designing the systems for a building.

The Assignment

More specifically, we ask you now to prepare a web page which presents as many structural systems as possible and the criteria which a working engineer might use to make a selection for a particular building. We'll test your understanding by asking you to use your web page to explain how the information you provide is used to make a selection.

Details

At the beginning of the project each group will be assigned:

A building type from amongst the following - shown on the teams assignment pageA particular location and building size to be used for your illustration.

You then have three tasks to be presented in a web page

Research and present the structural systems which could be appropriate for your building type Develop and present the list of criteria which should be considered by the engineer to narrow the selection to the "best" solution for a particular project. Be sure to keep these criteria as general as possible, not focusing on your particular site in this portion.

Apply those criteria to your particular site in order to illustrate how a system might be selected. You will probably have to supply "reasonable" values to your criteria in order to do so. You will present the web page to your fellow students and perhaps to guests.

Teamwork

The teams for the assignment are the same as for the last assignment. You are welcome to consult with your classmates for suggestions - short of direct copying. The grading is on an absolute scale so mutual assistance can only help each group.

Teams for this Assignment

Submit an evaluation of your team's performance on this project - an opportunity to address any problems. Do so by submitting to the VistaBB assignment an evaluation including:

Your team number (from the team page)State whether or not there were teamwork problems for this assignment

If there are teamwork problems then state the following

A comment on each team member, starting with yourself including whether their performance was "average" or a little or a lot more or less than the average.

Any other comment about the problem that you believe should affect the grade.

Deliverables

You are to deliver a web site which addresses the assignment, ready to be viewed by the class and instructor. Each site should meet the following requirements.

HVAC Selection - A6

Purpose

In this exercise we'll build on the selection process you began in the Structural Selection assignment. We ask you to make the process as formal as possible with the intent of illustrating how one can make fairly rational decisions. In particular we're asking you to develop a "criteria matrix" in which you weigh a variety of systems (you decide which ones) against a set of criteria ( again you decide which ones).

The proof of your selection process will be demonstrated when we use it to evaluate several different buildings.

You are to use the references given in the syllabus, your texts from this and other courses, and any other relevant materials to develop a spreadsheet which presents the variety of HVAC systems a working engineer might use for a particular building type (see the Teams Page). You will also present the criteria (e.g questions, numeric parameters etc) that the engineer might consider when making a selection of one of your possible HVAC systems from among the many you've presented. Your spreadsheet will embody the logic to select a single system "best" suited for a particular set of conditions.

Criteria Matrix

The difference between what we're asking you to do this time and what you created in the Structural Selection project is that you are asked to produce a working model that makes a recommendation of a particular system given answers by the user to a set of questions (ie. values to a set of criteria). You'll do this by creating a "Criteria Matrix" which has as its elements the variety of possible systems and the criteria which will be used to make the selection. By providing values for each of the criteria the matrix will calculate which system is "best" for that set of choices.

The criteria matrix will be created using an Excel spreadsheet (we have models from prior classes you may use as a starting point). Your charge is to decide the systems, the criteria, and then the logic and weighting factors that make the criteria matrix work.

In the final presentation you will use the matrix that you've created to make a particular selection for a building.

Energy Analysis

We also ask you to refresh your knowledge of Energy analysis software and incorporate its use into the decision process.

Details

Detailed Assignment

As for the structural project each group will be assigned a project, defined on the teams page:

You then have four tasks to be presented in a web page

Research and present the primary and secondary HVAC systems which would be appropriate for your building type

when located in different climate situations and also of different total size.

Develop and present the list of criteria which should be considered by the engineer to narrow the selection to the

"best" solution for a particular project.

Apply those criteria to your particular building type in order to illustrate how a primary and secondary system might

be selected. You will probably have to supply "reasonable" values to your criteria in order to do so.

As part of the criteria we are explicitly asking you to include the use of energy. You are to make use of Energy-10 (or

the more advanced program eQuest) to demonstrate how you would develop objective comparisons of different

systems.

Climate Locations

You will present the spreadsheet to your fellow students and perhaps to guests. At that time I will ask you to demonstrate its use under some combination of the following conditions.

New York, New York

Anchorage, Alaska

Phoenix, Arizona Miami, Florida

Millwaukee, Wisconsin

Energy Analysis

You are to model your building and use Energy-10 (or eQuest, a more advanced package) to evaluate that building's energy use

in the different locations assigned locations. Because Energy10 is limited in the number of systems we are not asking you to

model more than one HVAC system, but you are to use different climates with one of your major choices and comment on how

using an energy analysis program can be used effectively in the decision process.
