Discuss how cloud computing influenced mobile computing, and how mobile computing

influenced cloud computing. Support your arguments with practical scenarios and examples.

People are no longer tied to a specific location. The devices they use enable ubiquitous

integration of work and non -work tasks while providing easy access to application ecosystems,

    social networks and information.

Mobile cloud computing an additional significant benefit is brought to the table. Many mobile

devices have significant constraints imposed upon them because of the importance and

desirability of smaller sizes, lower weights, longer battery life and other features. This often

severely constrains hardware and software development for these devices. Cloud computing

allows devices to avoid these constraints by letting the more resource intensive tasks be

performed on systems without these constraints and having the results sent to the device. Thus,

cloud computing for mobile devices is a very appealing and potentially lucrative trend.

Benefits from the mobile cloud computing:

    1. General-purpose mobile cloud computing: This family of solutions can be referred to as

    2. application-specific cloud computing: Many individual applications used today with mobile

devices such as smartphones employ cloud computing to a greater or lesser extent. There are

multiple methods used and proposed by which the cloud can be leveraged.

There are 3 things which mainly influencing mobile cloud computing:

1.Email on the go: Email communication now plays a central role in most of our busy lives.

Thats fine if you dont go out much but if you travel a lot, this may cause problems. Unless you

carry a mobile WiFi-enabled laptop with you everywhere you go or use push email on your

    cellphone.EX: postmail.com or me.com from apple.

    2. No need for local data storage: The cloud offers a solution. User can store MP3s, video,

photos and documents online instead of at home gives the freedom to access them wherever you

can find the means to get online.

    Ex:Dropbox

Collaborative tools: Such as, Skype for group meetings, Google hangouts for the group chats and

video chatting up to 9 people. E- Learning tools for mobile example WebEx and go-to meeting

    application.

Working in a virtual office: Google online suite was offering collaborative tool such as word

processor, a spreadsheet creator and presentation can be done this was online facility which was

offered by the Google and it providing online storage too.

Mobile cloud computing save the energy: The advantages of the cloud computing the primary

constraints for mobile cloud computing are limited energy and wireless bandwidth. Cloud

computing can prove energy savings as a service to the mobile users, through it also poses some

unique challenges. Many applications are too computation intensive to perform on a mobile

system. If mobile user wants to perform such applications, he can run on the cloud. However

some applications like Image retrieval, voice recognition, etc., should run on the mobile system

which consumes lot of energy, which can be offloaded to save lots of energy and extend battery

    life time.

Adapting new generation of semiconductor technology: we need to use small transistors,

    which results in better performance.

Avoiding wastage of energy: we need to reduce the wastage of energy by turning off the

mobile. Execute the programs slowly: which decreases the processors clock speed, so power

    consumption decreases

Eliminate computation: which means move computation away from the mobile device.

Real-time analysis and advantages of using cloud computing in Mobile Phones:

    Advantages of Mobile cloud computing:

    1. The growth of enterprise mobile cloud computing will create new revenue streams for both IT

and mobile suppliers serving businesses. Reasons for this include an evolving IT supply chain,

business adoption of cloud platforms for IT services and greater business use of handsets and

smartphones. In the longer-term opportunity is in mobile devices accessing IT services from the

cloud and paying for access on a per-use basis.

    2. Developers can also greatly benefit from mobile cloud computing. Advantages include access

to a bigger market, the chance to make applications that cost less, and keep a larger share of the

    revenue.

    3. Mobile data such as sensor logs and multimedia data are immediately available and can be

processed in-place or another node that is nearby in the network. Processing data in this way

eliminates the need to expensively transfer data to remote, centralized services.

    4. Data can often be shared more quickly and/or less expensively among mobile devices through

local-area or peer-to-peer networks. Data sharing is inherently useful in some applications, and it

is needed for collaborative computing jobs.

    5. Services such as websites that use mobile data can be created with little extra computing

infrastructure. Instead of hosting data and services on an expensive server farm or utility

computing service, work can be distributed among mobile devices.

    6. A mobile-cloud computing infrastructure could potentially be scaled to many more machines

than a traditional cloud computing infrastructure simply because of the number of these devices

    that are in use.

Real-time example from Google nexus smartphone:

Research over the past several years has identified the independent evolution of four powerful

forces are social, mobile, cloud and information. As a result of consuming and the ubiquity of

connected smart devices, people's behavior has caused a convergence of these forces. Where the

keynote touched on the story emerging around the Nexus and raised a warning to senior IT

leaders. Their existing architectures are becoming obsolete. In the Nexus phones information is

the context for delivering enhanced social and mobile experiences. Mobile devices are

a platform for effective social networking and new ways of work. Social links people to their

work and each other in new and unexpected ways. Cloud enables delivery of information and

functionality to users and systems. The forces of the Nexus are intertwined to create a user-

    driven ecosystem of modern computing.

  • Acsg-591 Assignment on Chp-14 -Rajani Gunda

Social technologies both drive and depend on the other three Nexus forces:

Social provides an important need for mobility: Accessing social networks is one of the

primary uses of mobile devices. Indeed, it is the main reason that many people acquire more

powerful smartphones instead of simple portable phones. Social interactions are transient,

fleeting and spontaneous. They have much more value when they are possible wherever the user

    is located.

Social depends on cloud for scale and access: Social networks benefit from scale, the kind of

scale that is really only practical through cloud deployment.

Social feeds and depends on deep analysis: Social interactions provide a rich source of

information about connections, preferences and intentions. As social networks get larger,

participants need better tools to be able to manage the growing numbers of interactions, which

drives the need for deeper social analytics.

GEO-Spatial Industry focusing on these GIS cloud data collection capabilities in mobile

    phones:

The Geo spatial Industry focusing on these smartphone mobile cloud application which it will

bring change in data collection and immediate availability from anywhere through the GIS cloud.

The smartphone is perhaps the most obvious example, where devices already support

communication by both voice and web but also incorporate locational capabilities in the form of

GPS, accelerometers, and cameras. The ability to combine data in near real time from airborne

LIDAR, laser scanned point clouds and digital photographic images is another manifestation of

this trend. Numerous possibilities arise with this way of collecting data. Each business has its

own specific needs and this requires development of specialized software on mobile platforms.

GIS Cloud supports common mobile platforms like Android, iOS and BlackBerry and enables

developers to build their own applications. They will take a closer look at solving problems using

smartphones in data collection and immediate data availability from anywhere, through GIS

Cloud. Numerous possibilities arise with this way of collecting data. Each business has its own
