What kind of TV shows are on channel 4?

Channel 4 was the official TV host for the Olympics and Paralympics this year.

Channel 4 show teenage dramas such as Hollyoaks.

They also show comedy shows such as “New Girl” and “The Big Bang Theory”

Channel 4 also show educational documentaries such as “Secret Eaters”

Documentaries

They show observatory documentaries such as Extreme A&E. Fly on the wall documentary.

What is the target audience for channel 4?

The target audience for channel 4 varies as from the times 3-7 there are shows such as: Big bang theory which is a comedy show.

How I met your mother which is also a comedy show

Hollyoaks which is a teenage drama. These shows are mostly aimed at

teenagers who go to college or students who go to university as in these times they would have come back from studying and would sit down and watch these shows.

After 7 channel four mostly broadcasts documentaries such as the sex education show, adult humour such as 2 broke girls and new girls.

These mostly aim at male and females ages 16-21 as they would have been more influenced on these types of subjects and also the sex education show would appeal to 16 and overs. Also mostly children aged 15 and under would be going to bed as there would be school the next day

Channel 4oD

Also on channel 4oD if you was to watch a show like sex education show, a parental control top up would show up and would ask to confirm whether you are 16, 17 or 18 and over. Therefore these shows are shown on TV at a later time.

The most successful time slots for channel 4 would be from 6-10

Teenagers would have come back from school/college they would want to sit down and watch comedy shows or documentaries which are shown at 10 o’clock such as:

What is the target audience for ITV 1 and ITV 2?

In the daytime ITV1 and ITV 2 mostly broadcasts shows such as: This morning, loose woman, the Jeremy Kyle show. These are targeted at an audience which are mostly woman who do not work and stay at home during the day. As the kids would have went to school and the mothers would be home.

In the evening ITV1 broadcasts shows such as: Emmerdale and Coronation street. These shows have sequels and are broadcasted at a time where most people would be home and would be able to watch them and not miss them.

Target audience: They are aimed at an older audience as they are not teenage dramas like Hollyoaks. I do not think that people from London would be watching coronation street and Emmerdale as it is set in the country and not in the city.

ITV player

The site would warn you that there would be adult humour in the show. Therefore celebrity juice would be aimed at an older adult audience and shown later on such as 10pm

ITV also has a page on their website which tell you at what times the shows come on, so it will be easier to find the show at a time where it would appeal to you best.

Most successful time slots

The most successful time slot for ITV would be from 6-10am as “daybreak” would be on and the parents or mothers would be watching this before and after they would send their children to school.

This is why BBC broadcasts many historic TV shows/documentaries

BBC ONE Times 6am-12 am there are programmes

such as: Cash in the attic, homes under the hammer, bargain hunt.Target audience for this would be men who are at home in the mornings and are into building or sales. Times 1-6 there are programmes such as: Doctors, only fools and horses, who let the dogs out these programmes are aimed more at stay at home mums who would have sent their kids to school.

Times 6-10 there are programmes such as:

Watchdog, who do you think you are?, the one show.

These are aimed at an older audience from people in their 20s as in watchdog they have contents which would not appeal to a younger audience.

The most successful time slots for BBC would be from 6am-10am and also and from 6-7pm as BBC news would be on and it is a very popular news channel for people who like to keep up to date with politics.

Chosen channel

My chosen channel is channel 4 because:

It appeals to the same audience I want which is teenagers ages 16+

The documentaries that they show most of the time have the same genre that I want to do. Such as: My big fat gypsy wedding.

Also I would like to show my documentary at 10pm which is when all documentaries are shown on channel 4.

My big fat gypsy wedding It is broadcasted every Tuesday at 9pm. The audience would be girls from the

age of 16 as the girls in the show are mostly aged at 16 and would get married at that age.

They would be curious to know about the different culture.

Supersize vs. super skinny comes on also every Tuesday at 8pm.

This would appeal to adults and also teenagers from age 16

As the parents of the children would want to watch this to get advice if their child is in danger

And also the teenagers aged 16 would want to watch this because they also want advice for themselves
