There is a need in the mobile news gathering industry for recording apps to be both easy to use and to be done quickly.

There is also a need for it to be on any device and the ability to be edited and marked up on the go.

The group that was observed during the ethnographic research contained both male and female college students who work in the news gathering field.

• Applications need to be easy to use for various people to be able to record.

• It also needs to be able to edit and send things back to the studio right into the editing system.

• When it comes down to writing news, it is very fast paced and things need to meet a hard deadline.

• Current audio applications are good at recording and simple editing, but can’t mark files.

The application would ideally combine all the best features of current recording applications into one app.

• The unmet need or desire:–Easy way to manage what is being

recorded and to mark it.–The ability to be used on any device.

• How the app would work?–The app would show a full screen for

editing files and allow the addition for markers.

Research on Smartphone Apps




iPhone Memo Recording:• The default iPhone application for

recording memos and voice recordings does a pretty good job with visually seeing what you are recording. However, the application struggles with sharing the audio that you are recording.



iRig Recorder:• Does a really good job displaying the

audio files and upload, but lacks the ability to mark files. Is very easy to visually see the audio and to trim it down.



iTalk Recorder:• This app is very simple to use and

has a big recording button, but it's not clear how to file manage or if it offers any editing of files.



While there are a few applications that provide the user with the ability to edit and record audio on the go, no application includes all of the features into one. By having an application that would allow them to record, edit and upload it back into the editing system it can increase their production.
