TASK1.

1.) What is an audience?

An individual or a group of people who read or consume any media text. It is also the assembled spectators of a public event such as a concert, a play and a meeting.

2.) Why are audiences important?

Audiences are important because without audiences there would be no media. Also, media organizations produce media texts for certain audiences so if there is no audience no profit can be made.

3.) What is the impact of new technology on audiences?

The impact of new technology on audiences has taken a massive toll on audiences because old media such as TV and print which used to have high audience numbers have to now work harder to maintain audience numbers.

4.) Explain a ‘fragmented audience’.

A fragmented audience is the division of audiences into smaller groups due to variety of media outlets.

Institutions continue to make money by ads. When you go on to an app on your phone they have adverts which annoy you sometimes so they give you the option to pay to remove the ads.

A mass audience are people who watch soaps or sitcoms.A niche audience is much smaller but very influential. These are the

people who have a very unique interest.

7.) Why do we categorize audiences?

We categorize audiences because they can be divided into categories based on social class/grade.

Demographics are the studies of a population based on personal information.

Psychographics' is the analysis of consumer lifestyles to create a detailed customer profile.

10.) What is quantitative audience research?

Quantitative research is when companies gather information in large amounts. They do this by collecting information from surveys of large groups. The techniques used are mail surveys, telephone surveys, internet surveys and face to face public surveys.

12.) How do we measure audiences?

We measure audiences by the amount of people in the crowd. For example when there’s a new movie out in the cinemas, the cinema can count how many tickets they have sold. Also for books, we can measure the audience number by the amount of film reviews left.

The Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB) is the organization that compiles audience measurement and television ratings in the United Kingdom.

14.) What is audience profiling?\

Audience profiling is when companies create profiles on their audiences such as questions like what genre they like, their least favorite genre and etc.

15.) Why do companies need to know this profile information?

Companies need to know this information so that they can create a movie that is fit with expectations for half of their audience.
