HUMANITIES

THE PSYCOLOGICAL

ASPECT OF BUILDINGS

Purpose : It is a place where all kinds of materials for study, research and concentration on Sri Aurobindo's revelatory epic poem Savitri can be gathered and made available.

BUILDING FORM :The building complex is arranged in such a way as to create space and a backdrop for the bronze statue of Sri Aurobindo, placed in the middle of a lotus-pond in the centre of a stepped plaza, which looks towards the “Sri Aurobindo Plaza. A transversal curved wall is the connecting and harmonizing element of the diverse and contrasting forms of the composite structure. This curved wall - intersected by the tilted roof of the art gallery – generates the height development of the building compound. The monotonous flow of straight line have been balanced by the continous flow of curved elements.

ACCESSIBILTY : From statue the entrances to the main building, the art gallery and the hostel are reached. All these facilities can be run inependently. These entrances are situated on a split level on top of an artificial hill, which not only gives an elevated appearance to the complex but also allows the arrangement of a much-needed basement on ground level, thus avoiding flooding problems during the monsoon. On the northern side, the hostel is separated from the main complex by a long closed wall. On the southern side the main building opens to the park, along which the multi-purpose hall, the amphitheatre .The split level arrangement also permits easy integration of the amphitheatre, which can easily be accessed from the raised main floor as well as from the ground level.

The colour : the blend of grey and white colour balances each other as well as gives a peace effect as both of them are neutral colours , it also provides an achromatic effect.

USE OF LIGHT : To make the building climatic responsive grey brick fins have been incorporated in the exterior of the building, which is being enveloped by the wooden openable windows. even in the roof of the basement hall a dome structure admits light into the building .in the main exhibition area i:e the angles roof part has fins shielded with glass and let the diffuse light ing.

Turku university hospital , finland Sweco Architects

Purpose : It’s a hospital which serves as the central hospital for southwestern Finland.

BUILDING FORM :The complex consists of three separate buildings – an in-patient building, the outpatient departments building, and the examination and operation departments building – which are united by a high central lobby with a glass roof, the hospital’s living room. This joint space also includes the cafeteria-dining room for patients and staff, the lobby and waiting rooms on different floors, and the auditorium of the teaching hospital.it has 2 triangle shaped element projecting which is the triangle-shaped patient wards. The offices and nurses’ stations are located at the points of the triangle, while the service areas are in the centre. The purpose of this solution is to bring the nurses closer to the patients. It is also meant to spare the nurses’ steps, thus leaving more time for the actual care of patients.

Façade : The façades are made of sandwich elements and partly as roughcast structures built on site. The long-term durability of the façade elements is ensured by using hard, dense concrete and stainless steel reinforcements. It’s a fusion of concrete and glass.

INTERIORS : The interior is dominated by a spacious, five stories high main lobby with a glass roof, around which the terraced staircases and balconies with plants and greenery make for a pleasant and elegant appearance . The patients are accommodated in bright, airy rooms with one or two beds located on the outer sides of the wards. Well-lit lounges and rest rooms, balconies and outdoor terraces also contribute to a pleasant atmosphere for both patients and staff.

GOLCONDE ASHRAM , PONDICHERRY Arch. George Nakashima and Antonin Raymond

PURPOSE : A meditating centre with hostels for the followers of Sri Aurobindo.

BUILDING FORM : It has a regular cuboidal form and taking advantage of a slender site, the plan layout offers maximum exposure on the northern and southern facades while absorbing a minimal heat gain on the slim eastern and western facades. Oriented towards a public street to the north, the stair tower and corridor serve as a buffer allowing each room a direct, more private relationship with the cooler southern garden.

FACADE : From the exterior, the building has a surreal, abstract quality. The facades are modulated with operable cement louvers set in custom-made brass hardware. The crushed seashell plaster walls and black stone floors of each room provide a luminous canvas for the mélange of breeze and light entering through the louvers and sliders. The central core, containing the main stair as well as the bathroom units, services the building.

THE MATERIALS & COLOURS: The immaculately maintained building uses a spare material palette: reinforced concrete primary structure, bowed concrete shell roof, and polished Cuddapah (a local slate) floors. The precast, thin-shelled concrete roof vaults create a buffer from the tropical solar exposure, and facilitate drainage during the intense monsoon rains.

USE OF LIGHT : The north facing interior corridors facilitate a passive solar strategy for convection cooling. The sliding panels consist of staggered strips of teak wood, allowing for the passage of breeze, while maintaining visual privacy. Operable concrete louvers ensure constant air circulation as well as cut down the hot sun radiation and admits diffuse lighting in..

THE LANDSCAPE: The skillful integration of the building with the surrounding landscape. The landscape plan situates lines of water channels and reflecting pools along the northern and southern gardens; furthermore, the northern garden has a spare ground cover, whereas the southern shade garden has been densely planted with trees. The temperature differential between the northern and southern gardens facilitates natural convection currents through the building .

ILLUMINATION HOSTEL , CREATIVITY SOCIETY , AUROVILLE

PURPOSE : A residential hostel for the aurovillians in creativity society.

BUILDING FORM AND FAÇADE : It’s a regular cubical shaped building with the south facing façade having openable alluminium fins like element , which is on the corridor side therefore , the south sun radiation is being cut down. On the top of the roof there is a colonaded shelter like structure ,which provides a space for the people to enjoy the cool night breeze or even to view from above while giving shade.

THE COLOUR : the blend of grey and white colour balances each other as well as gives a peace effect as both of them are neutral colours, it also provides an achromatic effect. The staircase core of the building has been coloured with bold bright yellow paint , this creates focus as well contrast to the achromatic building.

USE OF LIGHT : Alluminium fins can be set at an angle as well as shut closed according to the need of sun light , the use of alluminium gives a sleek effect as well as it sdurable due to its corrosive resistant property.even in the balconies the slab projected provides shade.

hotel resort Soneva Kiri 24H-architecture

PURPOSE : The 6 star hotel resort Soneva Kiri is located on KohKood, an island in the Gulf of Thailand. Most prominent is The Children Activity and Learning Centre, which will provide visiting children a wide range of entertaining activities as well as raise the level of ecological awareness with them.

BUILDING FORM : This Den provides an Auditorium/Cinema for films, lectures and plays, a library with books on permaculture and local traditions, an Art room, a Music room and Fashion room, thus giving children both creative and ecological education while playing. The Den is located at a rocky slope close to the sea. With its Manta-ray inspired bamboo dome, perched in an elevated position so as to offer magnifi cent views, it seems to launch itself into the bay. The structure and roof are made from local Thai bamboo, thus contributing further to the ecological approach of the resort.

THE INTERORS : The interior is made from local plantation River Red Gum wood and rattan structural elements for the inner domes. Next to the Den, the site provides a sleeping pod for toddlers, and a toilet building as well as a cooking cave with vegetable garden for the children to prepare their own lunch with a special cook. The design adopts all bioclimatic aspects to suits it humid tropical environment. The roof cantilevers Up to 8m acting like a big umbrella providing shade and protection from the heavy rains. The open design with the translucent elevated rooftop and setback floors allow a natural airfl ow inside and the use of natural daylight, limiting the building’s energy consumption. The Eco Suite is a family of sculptures in the forest, like a bunch of wasp nests hanging between the trees.

THE STRUCTURE : Each structure is made from bamboo poles and a woven bamboo net structure, shaping the general form and keeping the façade open for natural ventilation. The treetop dining is a basket with 4 seats, clad with coconut fi bre, which can lift up the guests to the top of the tree for a sunset dinner with a magnifi cent view to the horizon of the Gulf of Thailand.

The resort is a very good example of adaption of vernacular architecture to the contemporary world.
