INTRODUCTION

THIS PROPERTY IS LOCATED WITHIN, WHAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE PART OF THE TOMIKO, TERRAIN OF THE GRENVILLE GEOLOGICAL PROVINCE. THIS PROPERTY AREA IS SHOWN ON O.G.S. MAP, P- 679, TOMIKO AREA EAST - HALF. THIS AREA WAS MAPPED IN A SCALE OF l in = Imile. THE MAPPING WAS DONE BY DR. SYD LUMBERS ET AL , IN 1974.

THE PROPERTY IS WITHIN THE ONTARIO MINISTRY OF NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT AND MINES, SUDBURY DIVISION, NIPISSING DISTRICT.

THE LARGEST AND MOST EXTENSIVE BODIES OF MUSCOVITE ARE WITHIN BUTLER TWP. WITH SOME EXTENSIONS INTO EDDY TWP. HERE , BODIES OF MUSCOVITE, QUARTZ GNEISS, RISE UP IN FOLDED RELIEF ABOVE THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY ROCK TO A H1EGHT OF 30 METERES, OR 120 FT.

ACCESS

THE PROPERTY CAN BE FOUND FROM THE SMALL TOWN OF MATTAWA, A SMALL TOWN LOCATED ALONG THE OTTAWA RIVER, IN EASTERN ONTARIO. THE TOWN IS SERVED BY THE TRANS- CANADA HIGHWAY 17 AND BY THE OTTAWA VALLEY RAILWAY. THESE LINKS ARE BOTH EAST AND WEST ACROSS CANADA, AND CONNECT EASILY TO ALL SOUTHERN ROUTES.FROM MATTAWA , WE TRAVEL NORTH WEST 43 KM. FROM THE HIGHWAY BRIDGE ALONG 533 HWY. A ROAD TO THE NORTH, A FORMER LOGGING ROAD TAKES YOU TO OTHER INTERCONNECTING BUSH ROADS. THESE BUSH ROADS, FLANK OR TAKE YOU RIGHT OVER THE MUSCOVITE HILLS, FOR EASY ACCESS.

PACE 2 MINERALOGY

THE MUSCOVITE - QUARTZ GNIESS OF THE AREA WAS MAPPED IN SOME EXTRA DETAIL BY DR. SYD LUMBERS, AFTER SEEING OUTCROPS OF INTEREST. THERE ARE KNOWN KYANITE DEPOSITS TO THE SOUTH EAST AND THESE HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO LEASE. THERE IS ALSO A QUARRY FOR ASBESTOS FREE VERMICULITE DIRECTLY TO OUR WEST.

WE HAVE MADE 2 FURTHER DISCOVERIES, THAT WERE NOT PREVIOUSLY MAPPED BY DR. LUMBERS. ONE SHOWS A GOOD CONTENT OF KYANITE, AND FOLLOWS ALONG A NORTH WEST STRIKE OF A RIDGE. THIS IS BODY A-3, ON OUR MAP. SEE ENCLOSED, THIS IS VERY WELL SEEN ALONG AN OLD BUSH ROAD WHERE SKIDDING HAS EXPOSED A FLAT AREA. THE OTHER IS AWAY FROM THE MAIN GROUP AND LIES IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF OUR CLAIMS. IT APPEARS TO BE OF GOOD SIZE AND GRADE FOR MUSCOVITE AND GARNET. IT HAS NOT AS YET BEEN MAPPED BY US.

OUR FOCUS HAS BEEN ON THREE HILLS LOCATED CLOSE TOGETHER, THEY ARE SHOWN ON OUR MAPS AS HILLS A-I, A-2, AND A-3, WHICH IS ONE OF THE NEW DISCOVERIES. THE ECONOMIC MINERALS PRESENT, BASED ON VISUAL DETERMINATION ARE MUSCOVITE AT 300xb-7007o^ ALMANDINE GARNET W/0+ , KYANITE 5%-3Q%+. THERE IS ALWAYS AN INCREASE IN QUARTZ, BIOTITE, AND PYROXENE AMPHIBOLES WHEN THERE IS AN INCREASE IN KYANITE. WHERE THERE ARE LARGE QUARTZ SEGREGATIONS KYANITE MAY INCREASE TO 5W/0+. AROUND THE NODULES OF QUARTZ, AND NEAR THE NODULES OF QUARTZ THERE IS A DECREASE IN MUSCOVITE AND LITTLE GARNET.THERE ARE LAMINATED META-QUARTZITES WHICH OCCUR NEAR THE MARGINS OF THE BODIES OF MUSCOVITE-QUARTZ GNEISS. THESE APPEAR TO BE OF LITTLE INTEREST EXCEPT AS A POSSIBLE LANDSCAPE STONE.IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS AREA WAS AN ALUMINA AND SILICA RICH SEDIMENTARY FOR MATION PREVIOUS TO METAMORPHISM AND FOLDING.THERE MAY AS YET BE SOME GOOD KYANITE GRADES IN THE LOWER PORTIONS OF THESE FORMATIONS. NO DRILLING WAS EVER DONE IN THIS AREA. WE CANNOT COMPARE WITH THE KYANITE PROPERTY TO OUR SOUTHEAST, AS THAT AREA HAS BEEN STRIPPED AND DRILLED SINCE 1951. THAT AREA HAS ALSO BEEN FURTHER DEFORMED BY A GRANITIC INTRUSION, AND MAY HAVE BEEN UPTURNED. SEE AMERICAN KYANITE CORP. O.G.S. REPORT # 5329, 1981. THAT FORMATION ALSO STRIKES IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION, FROM OUR AREA 20 DEGREES NORTHEAST, COMPARED TO OUR AREA AT 140- 160 DEGREES. NO LARGE GRANITIC INTRUSIONS ARE SEEN IN OUR AREA.

OTHER ROCKS OF THE AREA ARE BIOTITE-PYROXENE DIKES INTRUDING MET A- QUARTZ FELDSPATHIC COUNTRY ROCK. THESE DIKES MAY HAVE BEEN A HEAT SOURCE FOR TRANSFORMATION. ONE OTHER DIKE ON OUR EAST ZONE APPEARS TO BE A META- GABBRO FORMED FROM A POSSIBLE BASALT, WHOLE ROCK ANALYSIS ON THIS FORMATION INDICATES 32"7o MAGNESIUM. THIS FORMATION OCCURS ALONG A FAULT ZONE, AND THE BODY APPEARS AT ANOTHER LOCATION. THIS FORMATION ALSO CONTAINS A FINE GREEN GARNET, POSSIBLY ANDRADITE.

KYANITE IS MORE PREVALENT IN THE BIOTITE PHASES WITH THE QUARTZ AND MUSCOVITE. THIS HILL HAS BEEN LOOKED AT IN PART ABOUT 100M. IN WIDTH X 800 M. IN LENGTH, ALTHOUGH IT IS MUCH LONGER AND WIDER. THE VISUAL ESTIMATES SO FAR ARE 3007o4 MUSCOVITE, IQO/O+ GARNET, AND 100704- KYANITE.THE CENTRAL AND WEST AREAS AS WELL, AS MOST OF THE SOUTHERN AREA HAS NOT BEEN CHECKED AS YET.

THIS IS ALSO A BODY OF QUARTZ-MUSCOVITE GNEISS. THE MINERALOGY IN THIS BODYIS BASED ON 10 O/C LOCATIONS. 3 OF THESE WERE IN THE CONTACT AREA ALONG THENORTHWEST CORNER ALONG THE UNMAPPED BUSH ROAD, l IS FLANKING THE SOUTH OFTHE HILL, THIS HAS BEEN BLASTED AND IS ONE OF THREE SAMPLE LOCATIONS.6 O/C LOCATIONS WERE LOOKED AT THE TOP OF THE HILL AND 2 OF THESE WERESAMPLED AFTER BLASTING.THE MINERALS PRESENT WERE VISUALLY DETERMINED TO BE 300,-U MUSCOVITE, IQ^DEEP MAUVE GARNET, GREY TO BLUE KYANITE AT 10"^, AND THE BALANCE BLACKBIOTITE, MAGNETITE, AND POSSIBLY ILLMENITE.THIS BODY HAS BEEN LOOKED AT ABOUT 250M. WIDTH X 800M. LENGTH. THE GARNRTCRYSTALS HERE ARE UP TO l .5 CM. OTHER AMPHIBOLITE GARNET WAS SEEN BUT IS NOTWELL FORMED UP TO 2.5 CM. AT 8007o, AND IS IN SMALL DIKES CUTTING THE BODY THELARGEST OF WHICH IS 30 CM.THIS IS ALSO THE MOST EASILY ACCESSED BODY OF THE THREE IN THE "A" ZONE.

ZONE A-3THIS BODY LIES ON THE EASTERN EDGE OF THE "A" ZONE. THE MINERALOGY IS BASEDON 9 OUTCROP LOCATIONS, ONE OF WHICH IS BLASTED OPEN. THIS BODY HAS BEENLOOKED AT OVER A LENGTH OF 400M. X 100M. WIDTH. THIS AREA REPRESENTS THEHIGHEST VISUAL CONTENT OF KYANITE, AT 200/0+, AND OTHER AREAS NEAR QUARTZZONES MAY REACH lQ+%. THIS DOES NOT DISTRACT FROM THE MUSCOVITE CONTENT.THERE IS A RISE IN QUARTZ CONTENT WITH THE KYANITE, HOWEVER THE BIOTITECONTENT STAYS ABOUT THE SAME AS THE OTHER BODIES. THERE IS A LOWERING OFFELDSPATHOIDS.THE INCREASE IN VISUAL KYANITE MAY BE BECAUSE THE BODY HAS A DIFFERENT DIP,OR IT HAS SEEN MORE EROSION ON THE EAST SIDE. IF ZONING IS PRESENT IN THESEBODIES IT MAY BE DUE TO ASSOCIATED VISIBILITY.IT IS NOT UNLIKLEY THAT THE OTHER BODIES MAY CONTAIN MORE KYANITE AT DEPTHOR ALONG HIDDEN MARGINS.THIS IS SUGGESTED IN THE KYANITE DEPOSIT TO OUR SOUTHEAST. ( SEE REPORT O.G.S.OPEN FILE REPORT # 5329, 1981 ENCLOSED). THIS REPORT TALKS ABOUT A GRANITEINTRUSION DIRECTLY TO THE SOUTH, THIS MAY HAVE TURNED THOSE BODIES ON THEIRSIDE. SOME OF THE DRILL REPORTS ALSO SUGGEST ZONING MAY BE EVIDENT. THISDEFORMATION ZONE HAS NOT ENTERED OUR ZONE "A" SHOWINGS.THIS ZONE OF DEFORMATION STAYS JUST ALONG THE SOUTH EDGE OF OUR CLAIM PKG.STRIPPING AND DETAILED PROSPECTING HAS ALSO BEEN CONDUCTED ON THE KYANITESHOWING SINCE 1951.

OTHER POSSIBLE USES

THERE ARE POSSIBLE USES FOR THE MANY AND VARIED STONE ON THIS PROPERTY.

THE QUARTZ- MUSCOVITE SCHIST MAY BE USED AS A LANDSCAPE STONE FOR NEW AND UNUSUAL DESIGN, WHEN WET IT PRODUCES A SOFTER DARK TEXTURE, WITH SILVER HIGHLIGHTS. AS IT DRIES IT BECOMES A MORE INTENSE SILVER TEXTURE, WITHOUT THE DARK BACK GROUND. IN SUNLIGHT IT IS VERY INTENSE.IT COULD BE USED FOR A STRICKJNG EFFECT FOR LANDSCAPE STONE IN THE ROUGH, SUCH AS WATERFALL OUTLINES, FENCES, PILLARS, AND AS A TEXTURAL FINISH AND REINFORCEMENT IN SPRAYED ON CONCRETE OR AS LARGE BOULDERS. IT MAY ALSO BE CUT FOR FACING STONE, OR USED AS A FIREPLACE SURROUND CUT OR ROUGH. IT COULD ALSO BE USED ON A PRE -FORMED CONCRETE BOARD AS AN ANGEL STONE TYPE OF PRODUCT, ETC... IT WOULD PRESENT A NEW AND DIFFERENT PRODUCT TO THE MARKET, WITH A HUGE SUPPLY AVAILABLE.

OTHER STONE ON THE PROPERTY IS THE LAYERED DARK GREEN GABBRO, MJGMATITES AND META-SEDIMENTARY FORMATIONS SOME WITH PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF VARIOUS SHADES AND COLORS, AND MICACIOUS LAYERED GNEISS.

AN UNUSUAL FORMATION OF QUARTZ SERICITE PRESNTS A BEAUTIFUL LAYERED STONE, THIS IS HIGHLY MICACIOUS, IN A WHITE-GREENISH TINT, QUARTZ HOST, WHICH DEVELOPS IN LAYERS.

ALSO THE META-QUARTZITE THAT IS NEAR THE QUARTZ-MUSCOVITE IS A POSSIBLE STONE, IT IS FROM A WHITE TO A RED COLORATION, AND IS LAYERED.

Kyanite, Garnet and Mica

A kyanite-muscovite-garnet-biotite-quartr-feldspar gneiss occurs in northeasterly trending bands associated with a country rock of pink granite gneiss.

The claim group is located on Crocan Lake which is- on the boundary between Butler and Antoine Townships. Crocan Lake is Immediately north of the extreme east end of Timber Lake. Highway 533 passes along most of the south shore of Timber Lake.

"The property can be reached by following Highway 63 from North Bay 43 kilometers (27 miles) to intersection of Highway 533. By following Highway 533 toward Mattawa for 16 kilometers (10 miles) a logging road on north side of Highway 533 will be reached. Both Highway 63 and Highway 533 are paved roads. Crocan Lake and centre of claim group are located 1.6 kilometers (l mile) north on logging road. This road is only open In summer. Best means of transportation on logging road is by half ton truck. Cars can be used in dry weather. Logging road can also be reached from Mattawa a distance of 35 kilometers (22 miles) on Highway 533." (Blais, 1975, p.2) (See figure 8)

The southeasterly footwall gneiss is particularly well exposed on the south shore of Crocan Lake while adequate but less extensive exposure of the hanging wall gneiss (biotite amphibolite) can be seen on the north shore of the lake. Overburden and logging operations to the east have obscured the previously cleared outcrop.

Visual estimates of kyanite in the footwall portion of the deposit are between 15 and 20 percent of the total rock. Drilling of 13 holes in 1973 by Arrowhead Silica Corporation (See Table 7) and subsequent analysis by the Mineral Research Laboratory of North Carolina State University confirms this estimate. Both Hewitt (1953, p.3) and Sullivan (1954, p.3) report lenticular concentrations of massive kyanite (80Z to 901) rock particularly along the contact zone of biotite gneiss with granitic gneiss for both the footwall and hanging wall portions of the ore body. Disseminated kyanite crystals uniformly found over most of the deposit measure 1/8 to 3/8 inches wide and h to 3 inches long. Possible by-product garnets can be found throughout the ore body with consistently euhedral crystals measuring \ to ^ inch in diameter and constituting about 155 of the rock.

GEOLOGY: The occurrences of kyanite follow along a large regional fold, a portion of which can be seen in the road cut of Highway 533 (Millar Vermiculite property) to the northwest. This structure underlies the topography of the lakes in the region. Hewitt (1953, p.3) supplies as accurate a geological analysis as possible for the heavily overburdened area:

"The deposit consists of a wide band of kyanite-garnet-muscovite- biotite-quartz-feldspar gneiss striking in a northeasterly direction and dipping flatly 300 to the northwest. At the south end of Crocan Lake thn kyanite-gamet gneiss band has an apparent width of over 1,200 feet. At the north ?nd of Crocan Lake the kyanite- garnet-gneiss occurs in two bands separated by quartzo-feldspathic paragneiss. Tile main or east band has an apparent width of 1,200 feet and a. probable true thickness of 600 feet; it is well exposed in numerous outcrops along the east shore of Crocan Lake and for a distance of over 3/4 mile along prominent strike ridges running northeast from Crocan Lake. A good cross section of this main band of kyanitc-garnet gneiss can be seen along the lumber road from Timber Creek to Crocan Lake.

The westerly band of kyanite gneiss has an apparent width of about 300 feet and a probable true thickness of 150 feet.

A third smaller band of kyanite-garnet gneiss is reported 3/4 mile northwest of Crocaa Lake.

The B zone is located on the hanging wall or west side of the main kyanite garnet gneiss band, at the northeast end of Crocan Lake. A stripping,, 35 by 10 feet, exposes sheared greenish kyanite-quartz-biotite rock abundantly mineralized with sulphides. A trench extends 60 feet westward from this stripping and exposes narrow bands of kyanite-rich material interbanded with quartzite, quartz veinlets, and disseminated sulphides. Green kyanite, biotite, muscovite, feldspar, quartz, and sulphides are the main minerals present. Narrow 6 - 15-inch bands of kyanite-rich gneiss occur in this zone. The rock contains abundant sulphides and some graphite,, and appears to be strongly sheared. The C zone is a showing on a point on the west shore of Crocan Lake. Lenses of pure, blue and blue-grey, massive, medium grained kyanite associated with green (chrome?) mica and sulphides occur interbanded with rusty fine-grained quartzite, quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, and amphibolite, which are well mineralized vith pyrite, pyrrhotite, and a little bornite. Values in copper, zinc, and nickel are reported from these sulphide-bearing rocks."

MINERALIZATION: The presence of graphite, pyrite and minor tourmaline areImportant only for petrogenetic purposes. Lenses of massive kyanite are associated with quartz-graphite-sulphide veins, and the segregation of kyanite into rich pockets associated with these veins "appears to be due to hydrothermal or pneumatolytic activity." (Hewitt, 1953, p.4) Late Precambrian granitic pegmatite dikes, 7 kilometers (4 miles) due west of Crocan Lake intrude the biotite gneisses of the area.

DISCUSSION

HISTOKT

Grain size and ore grade are important factors in determining

economic feasibility of kyanite for refractory purposes. In

Cullen, Virginia, the Kyanite Mining Corporation currently

operates a higher grade pit of 15! to 40Z ore (as compared with

a fairly consistent 15Z) which is sieving at up to 35 mesh (as

compared with 48 to 65 mesh for Crocan Lake). (Hewitt, 1953, p.7)

This tends to indicate that the Crocan Lake property is marginally

economical (excluding the high grade lenses). When properly

processed by wet grinding and magnetic separation of garnets

and biotite, followed by dry grinding to a 20 mesh, the

deposit could yield an additional 203 economic garnet along with

a kyanite concentrate free of biotite inclusions. The use of

muscovite as an economic mineral has been suggested, but further

flotation extraction work is required to verify this as a

possible by-product industrial mineral.

As the property ha* been examined repeatedly for over 25 years,

it appears likely that it will become economically productive.

The kyanite deposit was discovered In the spring of 1951, with

initial exploration and development work on the property being

carried out by J. Kenney and the Colwynne Chemical Corporation

of New York. A total of 770 meters (2,530 feet) of diamond

drilling plus clearing and trenching was done, prior to a

publication on the property by D. W. Sullivan (P.Eng.) in 1954.

(See appendix for summary of data) The 31 claim property remained

dormant until 1967 when Arrowhead Silica Corporation of Chesterton,

Indiana acquired the claims and continued trenching and clearing

until 10 of these claims matured to lease in 1972. From 1972

to 1975 R. M. Blais managed exploration of the property, drilling

1,064 meters (3,492 feet) of diamond drill holes; assaying 700

meters (2295 feet) of sand core, assaying 650 surface sample for

kyanite, plus an additional 20 samples for kyanite and muscovite, la 1975 and 1976 an additional 790 meters (2585 feet) and 525

meters (1727 feet) of diamond drill core was extracted and

logged by the Kyanite Mining Corporation which currently holds

the claims. (See Tables 6, 7, 3)
