Design This booklet will require you to complete a simple design folio which supports the practical work
you will be carrying out in the workshop.
The key elements of this folio will be
1. Statement of Intent
A description of the project objectives
2. Research
Materials and processes
Processes and technologies
3. Selection and justification
4. Development of ideas
Initial sketches
Workshop drawing
Cutting list

1. Statement of intent
Write a description of the project you have been instructed to make.
The Statement of intent should be written as a series of paragraphs which lead from one another to
create a clear outline of the task objectives and parameters. Write a sentence on each of the
following questions.

2. Research
Research can be any information which you do to help in the project. It can be printed material,
internet sites, conversations, visits, observation or testing

In order to make this project well, I need to find out some things which will help me.
There are THREE areas of research we are going to look at next
• Types of timber
• Tools and uses
• Processes and techniques
12
1 Types of Timber
Two types of timber will be used to make this project, Veneered particleboard and Radiata Pine.
1 Radiata Pine is a softwood.

2 Tools and uses
Many of the tools required have been covered in the first section of this booklet. There are
however, some power tools that you will have to use in the construction process.

3 Processes and techniques
It is important to learn, practice and apply the correct safety procedures to our practical work.
There are many new skills that you will need to evidence on this project.

3. Design
There are three parts to effective designing.
a. Initial sketches
Quick thumbnail sketches of the first ideas
sketching furniture
b. Developed drawings
More detailed drawings showing how different parts of the idea can work
c. Final working drawings
A finished idea drawn showing the correct measurements and construction method
Developed drawing for a mobile phone
20
a. Initial sketches
Sketch different ideas for your Dressing mirror turning. All should meet the needs set out in the
Statement of Intent but each should be different from the others in some way. The sketches should
be rough, quick responses with written notes to explain what you are trying to show in the drawing.
Use the next two pages to show your initial sketches.
21
Only the top 100mm of the stems can be turned. Sketch three different turning suggestions
22
b. Developed idea
Select one idea from the three you have drawn. Using the grid, draw up an accurate sketch of the
final turning profile you would like to use.
c. Final working drawing
There are many ways of presenting your final idea. The most common methods are Isometric or
100mm
23
Orthogonal. A 'working drawing' means exactly that. It contains all the detail to make the product.
Your idea can be drawn on the drawing board or by using a computer program such as Google
Sketchup. Select the method you prefer and draw up you idea. The drawing must be to scale and be
accurately presented.
Draw or paste the work on the following pages
24
Orthogonal projection
Produce a scale drawing on the grid below.
Add dimensions for critical measurements.

Making the frame
Task 1
This exercise will test your ability to measure, mark out and cut wood joints in timber. You are to produce the timber frame using the softwood provided. You are to evidence quality construction, finishing and safety standards at all times.
The tools and equipment you will need to complete this job are:
• Tenon saw • Steel rule and pencil • Bevel edge chisels • Marking gauge • Sliding bevel • Disc sander • Domino jointer • Thicknesser • Table router • Drop and slide saw • Morso guillotine • Marking knife • Battery drill
Safety test for the following pieces of equipment will need to be completed
• Thicknesser • Table Router • Drop and slide saw • Disc sander • Bandsaw
27
SAFETY TESTS Using the Onguard safety tests log your progress on these documents. You cannot use the equipment until you have received proper training and passed the relevant safety tests.

Cutting list
A cutting list is used to specify all the materials you will need to make the dressing mirror.
Complete the table below. It is possible that your measurements may be different from others.

Evaluation and testing
This is the final section of the design folio.
The purpose here is to reflect upon how well the cabinet meets the needs of the intended user and
what you have learnt from the experience of making the Dressing mirror.
Write an evaluation using the following questions.
What aspects are you happy with?
What aspects could be improved on?
How well does the product fit your needs?
What skills have been learnt?
How did you maintain quality?
What feedback did you have from others?
Was the process sustainable, safe and efficient?
