UG award calculation

UG pass mark = 40 for most programmes (certain

exceptions eg 50 for MBChB and BDS)

Degree classification is based on the weighted mean

mark (WMM)

Stage 2 contributes 25 of WMM stage 3

contributes 75 (20 Stage 2 and 80 Stage 3 for

integrated masters)

If the WMM falls within specified boundaries then the

Universityrsquos lsquoProfilingrsquo system (distribution of module

classes procedure) applies

Borderline Candidates (UG only) The University uses an automated algorithm

(lsquoprofilingrsquo system) to determine degree

classification for undergraduates

Responses to External Examiner reports

An acknowledgement is sent on receipt of a report

Schools are requested to produce a response to the issues raised in external examiner reports within 6-8 weeks of receiving it

External examiners should be satisfied that the response addresses any issues raised in the report If not please query this through Registry

Responses (University-level)

University level issues are discussed with the

relevant staff and individual responses are drafted

where required

The response to a University level issue may come

as part of the School response or may be sent to the

external examiner as a separate communication by

the DPVC (Education)

Consideration of reports amp responses

Summaries of reports and responses are submitted to both University and College level quality assurance committees and subsequently considered in Schools

Comments from external examiner reports are used as an input to our Annual Review process

Comments are also used as an input to the Universityrsquos periodic review process (VCrsquos Integrated Review)

Sharing reports with students

QAA Guiding Principle ldquothe degree-awarding body ensures that external examiner reports are made available to students in fullrdquo

Reports and responses shared as part of the normal business of Staff Student Committees

Schools expected to have in place a mechanism for sharing reports and responses with any student making a request

Fees amp expenses External Examiners receive an agreed fee for the service

they provide

The agreed fee may be claimed from the School

concerned upon submission of the annual external

examiner report

The non-staff expense claim form is used to claim both
