Assessment in teacher education
What is Assessment? Assessment is the continuous process of
collecting, evaluating, and using information to determine how well learning expectations are being met. The purposes of this process are to use these results, positive or negative. Assessment can play a positive role in a teacher education.
Whom to assess?
Students Teachers Programmed or course
Types of Assessment
Directive Assessment Indirect Assessment Formative Assessment Summative Assessment
Directive assessment is on looking on student’s performance by examining sample of students work. For Example- In the class, teacher observed and qualifies student’s performance depending on their knowledge.
Indirect Assessment is gathering information about students learning by looking. For example- Interview.
Formative assessment :It is used to monitor student’s learning to provide feedback. The goal of this assessment is to improve the quality of student learning , not provide any grades. Examples are-Instructor- Student conferences, observations, Question and answer, Self cheek quizzes. Observations Question and answer.
Summative Assessment is used to evaluate students’ learning at the end of the course or project.
Goal-It Provides proof of learning and assigning a grade. Examples –Midterm/ Final Exam Final Copies, Chapter /Unit Test.
Directive Vs Indirective Assessment
Rational for Assessment Assessment is obviously an important
part of any courses. There are several principles that have a relevance to most courses.
Principles for Good assessment in teacher education
The assessment should be formative. Though the assessment trainer gets the feedback from trainees. According to feedback trainer will take necessary steps.
The assessment should be summative. It should create a valid and reliable measure of academic and professional achievement.
Principles for Good assessment in teacher education
The assessment should at least in part act as an integrative device.
The load of assessment should be sufficient to provide educational information both to trainees and their tutors on the trainees’ progress.
Not all of these principles may be relevant in every situation
Assignment
For the effective assessment of the trainees, a good trainer follows several types of assignment. In a proper assessment system the trainer obviously maintains relationship between different aims and different form of feedback. There are different types of models of teaching and learning. So, it is probably appropriate that a variety of models of assessment should be utilized. To make a sound assessment of trainees, a good trainer provides several assignments. For Examples.
Assignment
Presentation- It is an individual task. First of all, trainer will provide a special topic and trainee will read it up properly. Finally trainee will present inform his or her group.
Essay- A piece of writer work which shows that the trainee has done certain reading in particular area
Project: - An independent piece of work, more sustained that an individual exercise and demanding more autonomous study.
Guided reading assignment: - A type of assignment t in which the trainee has to answer questions related to the reading which has been assigned.
