    Justification:

    This small-sized flatfish is known from several specimens collected off the northwest coast ofMadagascar. Limited information is available regarding its distribution, population size or trends, andpotential threats. Therefore, it is listed as Data Deficient.

    Geographic Range

    Range Description:

    Samariscus desoutterae is known from several localities off northwestern Madagascar (Quéro et al.1989, Desoutter et al. 2001, accessed via the Fishnet2 portal, www.fishnet2.net, 2019-08). It has beentaken from 250 – 350 metres depth (Desoutter et al. 2001, accessed via the Fishnet2 portal,www.fishnet2.net, 2019-08).

    Native: Indian Ocean - western

  • PopulationIt was described from two specimens collected in 1972 (Quéro et al. 1989); nine additional specimenswere recorded in 2009 (accessed via the Fishnet2 portal, www.fishnet2.net, 2019-08). No additionalpopulation information is available.

    Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information)This is demersal, marine species inhabits soft substrates in deep-water (250-350 m). The larger typespecimen measured 9.8 cm total length (Quéro et al. 1989).
