Unlike in previous years, the instructions and coding sheetswere reviewed in class and asample coding of a TV programwas conducted in class with thestudents. Students worked in pairsto help each other code the 30-minute program. Then, theprogram and the results of thecoding were reviewed via a Q&Asession. We believe all of the partsof the assessment were well-designed and adequately allowedstudents to demonstrate anunderstanding of the codingcategories and the proceduresnecessary for proper coding. Many students commented thatthey enjoyed the experience -from viewing and chartingprograms to uncovering messagesand intentions. Use of Results: Based oncomments from the outsidereviewers and C/J facultymembers last October, this newannotated bibliographyassignment was used to measurestudents' understanding of thediversity of peoples and culturesand of the significance and impactof mass communications in aglobal society. Students were tolocate ten articles – publishedfrom 2010 to 2016 – that relatedto the impact of masscommunications on a countryoutside of the United States. Theimpacts could involve any of thediversity and freedom ofexpression concepts covered inthe course and could involve anytype of mass communication(from newspapers and radio toTV/film and social media).

In Fall2015, the averagegrade point for the class was 80.2 percent (B range for lettergrade), however, that dropped to 77.2 percent (C+ range forletter grade) for 2016. That is due in part to the fact thatthere were no failures in the 2015 class but one “F” in the2016 class, which dragged the average down. critical reviews, programcriticisms, library/Internet dataretrieval). (05/02/2016)

Use of Results: As has been notedin the past, there needs to beadditional time towork with the students to developtheir basic skills with audio andvideo equipment aswell as photo and video editingsoftware. Also, the developmentof basic tutorials could helpthe students develop more quicklyand lessen the demands on classtime, which is at apremium already because of thebreadth and depth of materialcovered in the course. Inaddition, the instructor needs tostress much more the need forsuch skills in thetechnology-driven professionalworkplace in which the graduatingseniors taking theclass will soon find themselves.Students need to be exposed tomore anecdotal elements— bringing in professionals andformer students who are using theskills they learned inCOM 478 to help emphasize theimportance of learning andapplying the skills studentslearn in the class. (12/20/2017)

Reporting Period: 2016 - 2017Conclusion: Criteria MetFall 2016 saw a rather dramatic range in the quality of thework produced by students in the course from very highquality to barely passable work. In Fall 2015, the averagegrade point for the class was 80.2 percent (B range for lettergrade), however, that dropped to 77.2 percent (C+ range forletter grade) for 2016. That is due in part to the fact thatthere were no failures in the 2015 class but one “F” in the2016 class, which dragged theaverage down. Without the one failing grade, the 2016average grade point for the class would have been 84.8 (Brange for letter grade). (12/20/2017)

improvement between their first attempts in thedevelopmental exercises and the final project (05/02/2016)

Use of Results: Consider adding arequired research course in thecore. Regarding the overallresearch portion of the project, every group was required tocompleted an online survey andan in-depth interview their clients. This was the minimum; yet maygroups did not go any further.Based on the final campaignprojects, it was obvious that mostof the groups, even afterextensive classroom lectures, didnot understand the purpose orpoint of research. The interviewswith the clients where less thanimpressive and the surveys weremediocre, at best. A dedicatedresearch course would be atremendous asset to the program.(12/20/2017)

Reporting Period: 2016 - 2017Conclusion: Criteria Met19/20 students (95%) equaled or surpassed the competencythreshold. (12/20/2017)

Use of Results: Criteria met.Group project will be retained.Grade averages were higher thanthose reported during previoussemesters. We attribute this tothe increased level of involvementand feedback providedthroughout the semester (e.g.,peer reviews, several draftsubmission deadlines, the IRBcomponent and Survey Monkeydemonstrations). Use of Results: We spend quite ofbit of time in class going throughexamples and having the studentsidentify good and poor EMwriting. This is followed up withFriday in-class lab time workingwith students on various writingexercises. I would much rather uselabs in class time to assiststudents with their processing ofmaterial and eventual scriptwriting. The time spent in classtackling these short (andeventually longer) assignmentsallowed students to develop theirEM writing proficiency. We willcontinue to use this assignment, and this teaching pedagogy, infuture courses this fall 2017semester and beyond.(12/20/2017)

Reporting Period: 2016 - 2017Conclusion: Criteria Met18/20 students (90%) met or surpassed the competencythreshold. The average course grade on the assignment wasan 81, which was satisfactory for a first attempt. Mostproblems centered on (1) being conversational from theonset of the story and (2) writing short versus their learnedinverted pyramid/crammed suitcase style of print writing. So, the loss of points on the rubric came from (1) the Leadand (2) Organization, especially in the areas of SVOsentences, eliminating clauses and building an active, conversational style. (12/20/2017)

Thesestudents demonstrated evidence of full competency. About56% of the class would have been in the “B” category: therewas some evidence of competency, but by no meansperfect competence. About 32% of the class exhibited littleto no evidence of competency in the assignment.(05/03/2016)
