THE BEDFORD UNION ARMORY: TOO BIG TO LOSE

Assemblywoman Diana C. Richardson

Excessive rent and over-pricing has become a huge bur-den to our national and local community. This comes as no surprise due to the increase in luxury building, which has added to a decline in affordable housing, es-pecially within the 43rd Assembly District. One struc-ture at the heart of the matter in our neighborhood is the Bedford-Union Armory.

This building at the center of much debate was originally formed to accommodate the National Guard and was often used for civic and community functions.

The Bedford-Union Armory is now in the midst of a plan to transform it into a mixed-use entity which includes housing and a recreational space. There are large concerns for the housing portion which proves to be unaffordable to the Area Median Income (AMI) of the community and is a City project that will be driving further displacement. This proposal does nothing to help the surrounding community with the increasing affordable housing gap. I encourage all community residents to get involved.

Join us on December 17, 2016 for our next Civic Minded event! For further information, reach out to my office at 718-771-3105.
