Aspen Manufacturing Suite S95 Solution 3-1

C H A P T E R 3

Aspen Manufacturing Suite S95 Solution

The Aspen Manufacturing Suite (AMS) S95 solution allows you flexibility for large-scale installations by providing a method and associated tools for supporting S95 tag aliases.

An S95 tag alias fully describes an object and where it resides within an installation hierarchy. S95 tag aliases offer an easy way to retrieve data for specific equipment, rather than looking up individual tag names.

The form of an S95 tag alias is S95 Equipment@Tag Alias. An example is “Plant.Area.Machine@Temperature.”

The AMS S95 solution provides the following areas of support for S95 tag aliases: • Business Process Component (BPC) Database • Tag Browser – for Aspen Windows client applications • Tag Search – for Aspen Web client applications

BPC Database The BPC database stores and matches tag names with their associated tag aliases. This BPC database can be exported into an XML file and made available for clients. In some cases, you can improve performance of BPC client applications by using the XML file option (for more details, see the BPC Installation Guide).

Page 24: AspenProcessExplorerInstallationGuide

3-2 Aspen Manufacturing Suite S95 Solution

Tag Browser and Tag Search The Tag Browser and Tag Search tools are updated to support S95 tag alias searches in the BPC. In addition, these tools have been added as standard components to various AMS products.

The data from an S95 tag alias can be used in supported AMS products in the same way as tag names. S95 tag alias display is optional in supported AMS products; tag names will remain the default identification method. For example, the plot legend will offer NAME as a column by default. If you want to display the S95 tag alias, you must first add the S95 Tag Alias column to the legend.

Installing and Configuring an AMS S95 Solution To install and configure an AMS S95 solution: 1 Install and configure the BPC database according to the BPC

Installation Guide. 2 Install and configure the AMS products, including the ADSA

Directory Server (ADSA). Any products that support S95 browsing will also install the required BPC S95 Web Service and its associated components.

3 Configure the BPC Web Service and component configuration files according to the installation and configuration guides for all installed S95-enabled applications (InfoPlus.21, Aspen Process Explorer, ADSA, Web.21, Batch.21, SQLplus, and Aspen Calc).

4 Refer to the user guides and online help of installed S95-enabled applications for product-specific S95 tools.

Note: AspenTech recommends the following computer system hierarchy for AMS products: • Computer 1 – BPC data source, InfoPlus.21, ADSA • Computer 2 – Aspen web server (Web.21, Aspen Calc, or

Batch.21) • Computer 3 – Client applications (Aspen Process Explorer,

Web.21, Batch.21)

Creating a BPC Database By default, AMS clients will assume that the BPC database is the desired target for resolving S95 tag aliases. Even if you choose to

Page 25: AspenProcessExplorerInstallationGuide

Aspen Manufacturing Suite S95 Solution 3-3

use the XML file option for performance, the data remains in the BPC; the XML is only an image of the actual data.

Creating a BPC XML File Creating an XML file is optional. In some cases, it may offer improved performance and a method for redundancy in the event of a problem with the BPC database. For details about the XML file option, see the BPC Installation Guide.

Once the XML file has been created, you will need to direct your data requests to it by modifying the BPC S95 Web Service and component configuration files. See the installation and configuration guides for all installed S95-enabled applications—namely InfoPlus.21, Aspen Process Explorer, ADSA, Web.21, Batch.21, SQLplus, and Aspen Calc.

Setting Up ADSA As with all AMS products, ADSA is required. ADSA is automatically configured at installation time to resolve S95 tag aliases using the BPC Web Service. Alternatively, you can configure ADSA to use locally-cached XML copies of the BPC data instead of going to the BPC S95 Web Service (this may improve performance over a WAN, for example). For more information about the configuration of the BPC S95 Web Service, see the ADSA Directory Server Installation Guide.

Adding Additional Tags and Aliases Tag aliases can be added and removed through the BPC Administration Tools after the BPC database has been created. For more information, see the BPC Administration Manual.

Searching for S95 Tag Aliases The Tag Browser and Tag Search tools both support searching and adding S95 tag aliases to S95-enabled applications. Note: The Tag Search tool does not support drag and drop.

Page 26: AspenProcessExplorerInstallationGuide

Aliases in Graphics Web.21 Graphic Studio supports the use of S95 tag aliases. When S95 tag aliases are enabled for a Web.21 Graphic Studio project, all data source-related dialog boxes include the Using S95 Names check box which enables the use of S95 tag aliases. This is checked by default when the project is configured to use S95 tag aliases. Note: Aspen Process Explorer Graphics Editor does not provide a field for entering S95 tag aliases. But if an S95 tag alias is placed into the tag name field, it will be resolved and displayed as the correct tag name.

Installing Features and Subfeatures

Overview This chapter explains how to install the current version of Aspen Process Explorer. This installation assumes that you do not currently have Aspen Process Explorer installed on your computer.

Effective with the September 2004 release, all AspenTech products are offered on an eight-disc DVD set. The AspenTech Installer can guide you through the installation of a single product as well the installation of a group of products that are integrated to provide industry solutions. This manual describes the installation of Aspen Process Explorer within the AspenTech Manufacturing Suite family of products. Notes: • If you are upgrading Aspen Process Explorer, see the

Upgrading Aspen Process Explorer from v2.5.1, Upgrading Aspen Process Explorer from v3.1.2, or Upgrading Aspen Process Explorer from v4.x chapters.

• If you are installing an updated version of Aspen Process Explorer, follow instructions in the “Upgrading Features and Subfeatures” chapter.

• If you have a previous version of Aspen Process Explorer installed and want to add or reinstall features or subfeatures, see the “Adding and Reinstalling Features and Subfeatures” chapter. To repair features or subfeatures, see the “Repairing Features and Subfeatures” chapter.

10 Drag the selected tags to the display panel of the plot.

If the tags are plotted successfully, you will see a display similar to the one above. This confirms that the installation was successful.

Aspen Process Data for RDBMS Process Data for Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) uses ADO to validate tags using the Tags Table. The Tags Table (see below) defines the attributes of an SQLA tag. The location of the history/time series data, formatting configuration, and time locale are just a few of the attributes contained in the Tags Table for each defined tag.

You must use the ADSA Directory Server to configure the connection information used by the data server for RDBMS. A connection string is defined that is submitted to ADO to open a connection to a relational database. You can use either Windows NT authentication or database authentication when connecting to a database.

The Tags Table contains the attributes for a Tag. It defines the location of the history information for a tag, translation

information (such as level and quality tables), and retrieval parameters (such as first, last, and factor).

The following example table defines columns in the Tags table along with brief explanations of how the attributes are used by the RDBMS data server. You can configure your table with additional columns, from which Aspen Process Data (RDBMS) will return values.

Additional tables may be configured which contain a translation between a numerical value (integer) and a string. These tables can be used to convert a Level, Quality, or even a Value from a number to a string. All the tables must have the same form which is outlined in the following table. Column Name Data Type Description

ID int Numerical value Value varchar Corresponding string value Valid smallint Indication if the numerical value

indicates a valid sample. Used when table is for Level or Quality translations.

The determination of whether if a sample is valid or not is the responsibility of the data server. For the RDBMS data server, there are several configurations that can be used to determine the validity of a sample. The following section will outline each configuration and the algorithm used to determine whether the sample is valid (-1) or invalid (0). This section also defines the value for Level and Status if they are NOT retrieved from the database.

The order that contents are checked for sample validity is the following: • Sample Valid • Valid Column • Level Column and Level Table both Defined • Status Column and Status Table both Defined • Level Column • Status Column

Sample Valid The sample starts out as being a valid sample. The following checks can change the assumption.

Valid Column Defined

The contents of the valid field define the validity of the sample. If the field is NULL or equals 0, then the sample is invalid otherwise

Translation Tables

Sample Values

Column Precedence for Validity Determination

Page 57: AspenProcessExplorerInstallationGuide

Installing Features and Subfeatures 4-31

the sample is valid. The sample can be invalid if the contents of the value field are NULL.

Level Column and Level Table Defined If no valid column is defined and both a level column and level table are defined, then the value of the level field is used to lookup the valid flag from the level table. If the level table is not found or if the level value is not found in the level table, then the sample is invalid.

Status Column and Status Table Defined If there is no valid column and no level table defined, and if both a status column and status table are defined, then the value of the status field is used to lookup the valid flag from the status table. If the status table is not found or if the status value is not found in the status table, then the sample is considered invalid.

Level Column If the level column is defined, and the value of level is less than zero then the sample is invalid (level < 0 equals invalid). If the level is greater than or equal to zero then the sample is valid (level >= 0 equals valid).

Status Column If the status column is defined, and the value of status is less than zero then the sample is invalid (status < 0 equals invalid). If the status is greater than or equal to zero then the sample is valid (status >= 0 equals valid).

Once the validity of the sample is determined by the configured columns, you must complete a few more steps before the sample is returned to the caller.

Sample Invalid – Clear Sample Value

If the sample was invalid based upon the above steps, then the value of the sample is cleared. Since the sample has been determined to be invalid, then the value cannot be trusted.

Value is NULL – Sample Invalid If the database contains a NULL in the value column, then the sample is invalid. This overrides all the previous checks that can occur to determine the validity of the sample.

Sample Post Processing

Page 58: AspenProcessExplorerInstallationGuide

4-32 Installing Features and Subfeatures

Level Value If no level column is defined, then the value of level is 0 if the sample is valid, and –1 if the sample is invalid.

Status Value If no status column is defined, then the value of status is 0 if the sample is valid, and –1 if the sample is invalid.

You are unable to run the Aspen Tag Browser.

If you upgraded your operating system from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 after you installed Aspen Process Explorer, the Aspen Tag Browser will not run.

Uninstall Aspen Process Explorer and reinstall Aspen Process Explorer.

You cannot access a data source.

The Aspen Data Source Architecture (ADSA) Directory Server or ADSA Client on the computer where you installed Aspen Process Explorer is not configured to “speak” to the data source.

Note: For more information, see the Aspen Data Source Architecture Directory Server 6.0 Installation Manual.

Re-configure the data source with the ADSA Directory Server or the ADSA Client on the computer.

You experience long delays when retrieving information using the Aspen Tag Browser or general performance delays in Aspen Process Explorer.

The DCOM protocols are spending time checking each protocol before looking at the TCP/IP entry. Some protocols may not be needed and can be removed.

Remove unnecessary DCOM protocols via the Distributed COM Configuration Properties dialog box.

Note: This solution is only effective on Windows 2000.

You receive this message during the installation of Aspen Process Explorer: The installation of the Core Component Microsoft Data Access 2.1 failed. Setup cannot continue.

Anti-virus software can slow down data transfer from a CD and thereby cause an installation failure. This installation failure typically happens on a slow machine during the MS Data Access 2.1 portion of the installation.

If you encounter this problem, disable your anti-virus software and repeat the installation.

Troubleshooting 9-3

Problem Meaning Possible Solutions

The following error message may appear when you try to start Aspen Process Explorer:

Process Explorer failed to initialize VAO components.

Aspen Process Explorer may not function correctly if installed via a third-party install utility, such as WinInstall.

Do not use a third-party install utility to install Aspen Process Explorer.

An error with the message “Process Explorer failed to initialize VBA components” when using the NobleNet PortMapper, a service started with Aspen Process Explorer, and the Net/21 Manager, an AspenTech utility for the client network connection to CIM/21

Net21 Manager must be running on a Windows XP or Windows 2000 client computer to view data from CIM/21.

AspenTech recommends starting them manually each time or creating shortcuts to them in the Windows StartUp folder. For Net21 Manager, be sure not to copy Net21Mgr.exe directly, but create a shortcut to it (or to N21Mgr95.exe or N21MgrNT.exe).

Uninstall.ini should not be deleted when a user re-runs a product install.

This error occurs when you install Process Data. Then, at a later time, when you install Process Data with other subcomponents.

To workaround the problem of the uninstall.ini getting duplicate entries (which causes errors at uninstall with IDK 1.5), install and delete the uninstall.ini first, then re-generate it. To workaround the problem of the uninstall.ini getting duplicate entries (which causes errors at uninstall with IDK 1.5), install and delete the uninstall.ini first, then re-generate it. Alternatively, you can rename the uninstall.ini file prior to reinstalling.

Data does not pass through a firewall.

ADSA uses DCOM, which cannot pass through a firewall

Locate ADSA on the same side of the firewall as the data source.
