Product Description
Aspen Plus® is the AspenTech state-of-the-art steady-state simulation systemthat can be used for modeling a variety of industrial processes including
chemical, petrochemical, energy, metals, and refining. Aspen Plus contains a
comprehensive library of unit operation models and allows you to easily plugin proprietary custom models. In addition, Aspen Plus provides full Windows®
interoperability to facilitate the process and design engineer‘s work processes.Aspen Plus with the Aspen Plus Optimizer and Aspen OnLine modules provides
the framework to make optimization (including closed loop real-timeoptimization) a natural extension to simulation, process control, and decision
making. Aspen Plus automatically installs and works with the followingseparately licensed sub-products:
Aspen Distillation Synthesis, formerly the Aspen Split feature in AspenPlus, allows you to construct ternary maps and do azeotrope searches on
multi-component mixtures, as well as use the ConSep unit operationmodel for distillation design.
Aspen Rate-Based Distillation, formerly Aspen RateSep, allows you to
perform rate-based distillation calculations using the RadFrac unit
operation model.
Aspen Plus Optimizer allows you to perform optimization calculations in
the equation-oriented environment.
Aspen Polymers allows you to model processes involving polymers andoligomers. It includes databases, property methods and models, and
reaction kinetics models required to simulate polymerization reactors andprocessing plants.
Aspen Plus Dynamics, which enables dynamic simulation. This product is

14 Process Modeling (Aspen Plus)
New Features and Enhancements in V7.3
This release includes the following new features and enhancements:
You can extract experimental physical property data for thousands of
binary mixtures using the NIST ThermoData Engine (TDE).
Integrated Economic Analysis now allows user-defined custom sizing andestimating methods through a new costing templates feature.
You can now view a greenhouse gas summary that reports the carbon
equivalents produced directly in the process or indirectly by consumption
of process utilities.
Aspen Plus simulation cases can be sent directly to Aspen Energy Analyzer
to evaluate and optimize process heating and cooling.
Conventional solid components can now be included in the mixedsubstream, making it much easier to simulate processes with solids.
See the sections below for a complete list of new and improved features.
Workflow and UsabilityThe new Start Page provides easy access to AspenTech news. You can
set the My News tab to display any RSS feed or disable the Start Page onthe Start Page tab of the Tools | Options dialog box.
The new Analysis toolbar provides easy access to features such as Aspen
Distillation Synthesis, Aspen Energy Analyzer, Aspen Flare SystemAnalyzer, and Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating.
The Pro/II converter has been enhanced and now supports a number of
features which were previously not supported or not converted correctly.
See the Compatibility Notes for a list.
There are now commands on the View menu to enable or disable the
display of Connection Streams and Measurements. These perform thesame functions as the checkboxes on the Flowsheet tab of the Tools |
Options dialog box but are more easily accessible. These also have
shortcut keys Ctrl+Alt+C and Ctrl+Alt+M.
Some shortcut keys and mouse controls used for navigating around the
flowsheet have been changed or added for ease of use and consistency
with HYSYS. In particular, the mouse wheel and Page Up and Page Downkeys can be used to zoom in/out by small increments, while Shift+PageUp, Shift+Page Down, and Home can be used for Zoom In, Zoom Out, and
Zoom Full. See the compatibility notes for the full list of these changes.
The Find Object command has been enhanced to allow you to search in aspecific Hierarchy level and to allow you to search for blocks or streams
using wildcards.
The Model Summary form now also appears in each supported block, allowing you to view and modify all scalar block variables for the block in
one place.
When you open a file and then save it, now the default save type is thetype of the original file. The default save type in Tools | Options is used
only for new models, and this is initially set to the more convenientcompound file (*.apwz) type. The default Aspen Plus file type stored
inside the compound file is now Aspen Plus Document (*.apw).

Process Modeling (Aspen Plus) 15
There is a new option on the Setup | Simulation Options |
Calculations sheet to automatically generate an XML results file when
running an input file or batch run.
Now when you rename or delete streams after EO synchronization, a newdialog box lets you update/delete corresponding EO variable names
entered as specifications on various forms. In previous versions, these
names could not be updated automatically, leading to various problems.
You can now specify descriptions for EO variables on the EO Input | Configure sheet which will be saved with your model. This can be used todocument complex or custom EO models.
The installer now has an option to install without the SQL database forAspen Properties Enterprise Database. With this option, the database must
be installed on another machine and the Database Manager must be used
to configure the database connection. There is also an option in the Serverinstallation option to just install the database without any of the products
that use it.
Integrated Economic AnalysisMaterial costs for raw materials and products are now passed from Aspen
Plus to Aspen Process Economic Analyzer. Their totals, along withannualized capital cost, total utilities cost, total product sales, desired rateof return, and pay out period are now reported on the Summary tab on
the Equipment Summary grid.
Aspen Plus can now use costing templates with Aspen Process EconomicAnalyzer to specify the location of the project, units set, lifetime of the
project, and other parameters.
The costing template is specified on the Setup | Costing Options |
Costing Options sheet. Key parameters can also be changed here. You
can create custom templates in Aspen Process Economic Analyzer to
specify custom sizing and mapping options. This removes the need tospecify these options each time you perform integrated sizing and costing.
The Costing toolbar now also has buttons linked to the Costing Options and Stream Price forms.
Equipment weight and total installed weight are now reported for each
piece of equipment in the Equipment Summary grid.
Engineering EnhancementsAspen Plus now reports CO2 equivalents for greenhouse gases produced
by each unit operation block, those emitted by utilities used, and totals forthe overall process, as well as the carbon fee/tax for emissions. See
Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the help for details about this feature.
It is now possible to use Utilities in HeatX blocks with the Rigorous methods, only in Design and Rating calculation types.
Three new mass transfer and interfacial area correlations for packings
have been added for use in Aspen Rate-Based Distillation. HanleyPall
(2010) models Pall rings, HanleyIMTP (2010) models IMTP, CMR, and -
ETA rings, and HanleyStruc (2010) models sheet metal structured
packings.

16 Process Modeling (Aspen Plus)
RadFrac, PetroFrac, and MultiFrac will now allow you to specify a columndiameter in rating calculations as small as 0.01 m. Previously the
minimum was 0.1 m. This will allow you to more easily model laboratory-scale columns.
Pressure relief calculations have been improved to make them more
accurate (see Compatibility Notes for details).
It is now possible to use an RPlug model without reactions (for instance,to model heat flux in detail).
In RPlug reactors with solids, you can now specify a solid holdup profilewhen you specify the liquid holdup profile. In this case the reaction rates
in vapor, liquid, and solid phases are all affected by the portion of thereactor occupied by those phases.
The Dryer model can now remove water from NC substreams in which it is
specified via the Moisture specification of the PROXANAL attribute, whenwater is specified as a moisture component. It does not operate on any
other moisture components in NC substreams.
The Pump model now has options for its vapor check in the same way the
Compr model does for its liquid check. See the Pump | Setup | Calculation Options sheet configure these options.
Common RXN_RCSTRR now contains catalyst data. This allows you to

It is now possible to use conventional inert solid components (specified asSolid on the Components form) in the MIXED substream. This allows you toperform simple solid modeling without the complication of using multiple
substreams.
Solid components with a particle size distribution still need to be used withone of the substreams that contain a PSD attribute.
EO formulations of Mixer, Flash2, Flash3, Decanter, Pump, FSplit, SSplit,Mult, Dupl, Selector and Streams support solids in the MIXED substream.Other models in EO do not support solids in the MIXED substream, and
will issue a warning if they are found. (Depending on the properties
available for these components, they may lead to errors in the EO modelswhich do not support them, or may run but lead to inaccurate results.)
The SFRAC property represents the solid fraction within the MIXED
substream. Previously, this solid fraction consisted only of salts, but now itmay also include conventional inert solids.
The new CISOLID-COMPS paragraph in input language specifies which
components are declared as solids. It is required only if you usecomponents of type Solid in the MIXED substream.
Properly-specified backup files from previous versions (including thoseembedded into .apw or .apwz files) will continue to work as they alwaysdid, with all their solids in CISOLID substreams.

You can choose to put some of these solids into the MIXED substream andsome in the CISOLID substream. When you do so:
For most blocks, solids will remain in the substream in which they werespecified.
RStoic can be used to move solid components between the MIXED and
CISOLID substreams.
Solid products of REquil and RGibbs will be placed in the CISOLIDsubstream if it is present in the outlet stream, or the MIXED substream
otherwise.
NIST TDE with Binary DataThe NIST TDE feature has been significantly enhanced to include
experimental data for binary mixtures. The available data include VLE,
LLE, heat of mixing, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, surfacetension, and others. These data can be used to perform data regression
using the existing Data Regression capability. These data constitute
virtually all available experimental binary data known to date. The
retrieved data can be viewed, plotted and saved to forms for further usein data regression.
For binary VLE data, TDE includes the capability to performthermodynamic consistency tests. The tests include a quantitativemeasure of the data quality (quality factor), which will be useful in helping
you select appropriate data sets to use.
This feature also includes a new workflow that allows you to perform dataregression or evaluation directly, thus enhancing ease of use. The NIST
TDE engine has been updated to version 5.0. The NIST-TRC databank hasbeen updated based on the June 2010 NIST SOURCE data archive and
version 5.0 of TDE; over 4000 more compounds have been added.
Data Regression EnhancementsThe evaluation feature of the standard Data Regression (Properties |
Regression | Input | Setup sheet, option Evaluation) has been
improved for VLE with 3 or more components and for LLE. Now a flash is
performed to ensure results will be consistent with results obtained byother methods.
Experimental binary data available in TDE can be used to populate theData form directly (Properties | Data | Mixture | Data sheet). When
you define a Data set containing two components, you can retrieve theexperimental data from TDE instead of entering them manually.

20 Process Modeling (Aspen Plus)
Physical Property ModelsNew property methods have been added based on Aspen HYSYS propertypackages: HYSGLYCO, HYSPR, HYSSRK. The HYSYS databank containing
parameters used in these methods has also been added. This is a verysignificant enhancement to Aspen Plus in that it brings the three mostcommonly used methods in Aspen HYSYS to the Aspen Plus productfamily. These methods provide additional industry-proven methods for oil
& gas and gas-processing applications.
New user routine PCHSLU for hydrocarbon solubility ofpseudocomponents. Hydrocarbon solubility is needed when the dirty water
approach to water handling is used. To use this subroutine, write a
subroutine that calculates the parameters of the Hydrocarbon Solubilitymodel from average boiling point, API gravity, specific gravity, and/oraverage molecular weight of the petroleum fraction, using the argument
list from Chapter 25 of Aspen Plus User Models, then specify User
Routine PCHSLU for Hydrocarbon Solubility in a petroleum propertymethod on the Components | Petro Characterization | Property
Methods form and use this method on the Components | PetroCharacterization | Generation form.
The Liquid Constant Liquid Molar Volume model has been enhanced to use
the General Pure Component Liquid Molar Volume model when parameters
are available for it and no molar volume VLCONS has been entered. Thismodel is used in the Solids Handling Property Method used for systemswhere the solid properties are most important. It should now provide
better liquid properties when VLCONS is not entered.
New option codes have been added to ENRTL-RK, ENRTL-SR, and NRTL-SAC for calculating the dielectric constant and density of water. For
STMNBS2, there is a new choice in the fugacity and enthalpy option code. The REFPROP property method has been updated to use the latest version(8.1c) from NIST.
New liquid thermal conductivity model based on the API procedure12A3.2-1 has been added. This is the current recommended API
procedure and should provide more accurate results for petroleum
fractions.
ChemistryIn Chemistry blocks you can now specify the equilibrium constants for
reactions based on a version of the van 't Hoff equation instead of the
expression which has been available in past versions. Additionally, there isnow a term for modeling the pressure dependence of the equilibrium
constant which can be used with either expression.
In Chemistry blocks you can now specify the reactive or inert components
instead of specifying reactions, and let the Aspen Physical Property
System use Gibbs energy minimization to compute the expected productsfrom among these components. With this option you do not specify any
reactions or equilibrium constants.

Compatibility Notes for V7.3
Aspen Plus V7.3 can be installed and used at the same time as V7.2 and otherprevious versions of Aspen Plus.
This section describes the differences that you might encounter betweenAspen Plus V7.3 and Aspen Plus V7.2. In most cases, previous Aspen Plus
input files and backup files are completely compatible with Aspen Plus V7.3.
When you open a file from a previous version, Aspen Plus displays the
Upward Compatibility dialog box. If you select Maintain UpwardCompatibility for Features Listed Below then Aspen Plus ignores the newfeatures in all the areas mentioned on the dialog box (which may include new
pure component databanks, property methods, built-in parameters, ADA/PCS
procedures, calculated molecular weights obtained from formulas, andchecking of user-specified sequence, depending on the version of Aspen Plus
used to create the file).
Costing results from Exchanger Design & Rating or Economic Evaluation maychange from one version to the next due to updated cost data.
New features in other areas, as noted below, may still cause different results
in the new version. These changes may have greater impact in flowsheets
with loose tolerances due to convergence paths being different. AspenTechmakes every effort to avoid making changes that result in incompatibilities
with previous versions. The changes discussed in this section were necessary
to correct problems (such as wrong results), to implement new features, or toimprove ease-of-use.
The most important areas where you might encounter differences between
Aspen Plus V7.3 and earlier versions are:
Unit Operation Models
Convergence.
Pressure relief.
Workflow and usability.
Solids.Physical properties.
Databanks.
Retired features.
Features to be retired.

22 Process Modeling (Aspen Plus)
Unit Operation ModelsModels exported from versions of Aspen Custom Modeler before 2004.1are now excluded from Aspen Plus. These models must be re-exportedfrom ACM and reinstalled per the documentation before they can be used.
As always, if you experience problems using ACM Models exported froman earlier release, try re-exporting them from the latest version.
The pressure drop calculation for flow in pipes formerly used an
approximation for calculating accelerational pressure drop. This
approximation could be significantly low for flow near sonic velocity, andoff to a smaller degree in other conditions. Now it uses a rigorouscalculation which gives correct results. This calculation is separate from
the two-phase frictional pressure drop calculation and applies regardlessof the correlation selected.
Analyzer now uses a TP flash instead of PQ flash in most cases. This
allows it to converge robustly in cases with zero flow. This causes a small
change in results, smaller than the flash tolerance. In V7.2, this changewas made only for the EO formulation, resulting in differences between
SM and EO results of the same magnitude as this change. Now both SM
and EO use the TP flash.
Some rigorous HeatX blocks using Design mode (especially ones with very
large duties requiring multiple series and parallel shells) may showsignificant differences due to the default iteration limit for design cases
being increased in Exchanger Design & Rating (EDR). This allows EDR to
find better designs it might have missed before. Also, the warning issuedwhen design cases reach the iteration limit is now more obvious.
When simulating a kettle reboiler of a distillation column rigorously using
EDR, now this will always be a K shell, the appropriate type. In previous
versions sometimes an X shell or E shell could be used instead. Theresults will change in these cases.
Enhanced input data checking for Exchanger Design & Rating (EDR) AirCooled Exchanger was developed to examine if input data sets containinconsistent, inappropriate, or missing data. It may cause cases to fail inAspen Plus when they previously ran in earlier versions, with no indication
of the problem. When the case is opened in the EDR data browser fromAspen Plus, the input items causing the problem will be highlighted, with ared background for incorrect inputs, or a blue-green background for
required inputs which are missing. When incorrect inputs are deleted, adefault value will often appear, which can be accepted, or revised asappropriate.
Convergence
When using a Component Group to specify the components to be convergedin a tear stream, if there are components not defined in the component group
with non-zero flows of component attributes (such as solids with particle sizedistributions, nonconventional components, and polymers) or if substreamsnot defined in the component group have phase attributes, results in V7.3
may be different than previous versions. The difference is due to earlier
versions always attempting to converge the component or phase attributes, even when the components are excluded by not being in the componentgroup.

Pressure ReliefThe Darcy model, which is equivalent to the DIERS HomogeneousEquilibrium flow model, is now the default frictional pressure dropcorrelation in Pres-Relief for all orientations. Beggs-Brill remains the
default method for Pipe and Pipeline. This may result in different pressuredrop calculations for Pres-Relief blocks where two-phase flow exists andthe methods on the Convergence | Methods sheet were not specified. To match results from previous versions, specify Beggs-Brill for all
orientations where a method was not previously specified.
When Darcy was specified for one of the frictional pressure dropcorrelations in Pres-Relief, previous versions also allowed the
corresponding liquid holdup correlation to be specified, even though Darcydoes not use the liquid holdup correlation. Now this field is disabled whenDarcy is selected.
Workflow and UsabilitySome shortcut keys and mouse actions used for navigating around the
flowsheet have been changed or added for consistency with HYSYS:
o Shift+Page Up, Shift+Page Down, and Home now do Zoom In, ZoomOut, and Zoom Full.
o
Page Up, Page Down, and the Mouse wheel now do Zoom In/Out by
small increments.
o Shift + arrow keys now scrolls by big steps (previously done by PageUp, Page Down, Home, and End).
o Ctrl + mouse wheel now does vertical scroll (previously done by
mouse wheel without Ctrl).
The Pro/II file converter has been enhanced, and a number of conversion
issues have been fixed. You will observe the following changes relative to
Pro/II conversions with previous versions:o
A Pro/II HX with a utility on one side is now converted to an AspenPlus Heater block and an Aspen Plus Utility.
o
Multiple Pro/II components with the same key can now be properly
converted. All Pro/II components in the PURE24, SOLIDS, INORGANIC,AQUEOUS, and NIST-TRC databanks are now converted.
o Several problems in converting units of measure and the flow basis of
streams have been fixed.
o The default physical property set is now converted correctly in someinstances where it was formerly converted incorrectly.
o Reaction data is now transferred for all supported reactors, and
pressure drop, volume, liquid phase, and product stream connectionspecifications are properly converted.
o When converting a Pro/II HX, operation variables such as temperatureand pressure drop are properly converted, including zero pressure
drop when no specification is given.
o When converting a Pro/II LNGHX, the duty variable is now properlyconverted.

o When converting a Pro/II FLASH, zero pressure drop and duty areproperly set when these values are not specified, and variable
UPPERDEW is converted.
o When converting a Pro/II SPLITTER, split fraction is now properlyconverted and a global specification is turned into an Aspen Plus

o When converting a Pro/II STCALC, split fraction is now properlyconverted.
o When converting a Pro/II PIPE, nominal pipe size is now properlyconverted.
o
Multiple feeds to a Pro/II VALVE are now supported by inserting an
Aspen Plus Mixer block.
The Setup | Report Options form in a Hierarchy no longer displays the
Flowsheet sheet. This sheet contains some rarely-used options to
completely suppress certain items from the report, and these options didnot function correctly within a Hierarchy. An attempt to fix this in V7.2caused the entire Report Options form to not appear within a Hierarchy;
this has been corrected.
Solids
Mixture entropy for the CISOLID substream (and for inert solids in the MIXED
substream) is now calculated in the same way as entropies are calculated fora mixture of salts in the MIXED substream, assuming they are pure
condensed species rather than solid solutions. This method is a simple mole-average of the entropies for the individual solids/salts. Formerly, a term x ln x
was used for CISOLIDs, representing the formation of a solid solution. Thismay show a large change in the calculated entropy value when multiple solid
components exist, but should not generally affect simulation results, since
models such as COMPR which depend on entropy are not normally fed withsolids.
Physical PropertiesIn V7.2, when using the new symmetric reference state for the activity
coefficients of ions, if no equilibrium constants were available for reactionsspecified in Chemistry blocks, the Aspen Physical Property System
calculated equilibrium constants incorrectly. This has been corrected sothat these equilibrium constants are not calculated incorrectly; instead,
when using the symmetric reference state, the equilibrium constants arenow required (either directly input, or calculated via data regression).
In the Components section of the Report file, the Name or Alias and
Report Names columns have been replaced by a single Name column. This makes this report consistent with the Components | Specifications| Selection sheet in the user interface, where ID, Type, Name, and
Alias are shown.

Process Modeling (Aspen Plus) 25
Calculations for sonic velocity (SONVEL and SONVELMX Prop-Setproperties) have been corrected for phase L when there are two liquid
phases. In addition, there is a new warning printed when calculating CV,CVMX, CPCV, CPCVMX, SONVEL, SONVELMX, ISENEX, and ISENEXMXwhen the liquid volume model is not pressure-dependent (as is the casewith the Rackett model). With these models, the dV/dP contribution for CV
is not calculated because the liquid volume model always provides a zero.Another model such as COSTALD or an equation-of-state should be usedto calculate these properties.
Calculations for the Prop-Set properties that calculate apparent flow rates
and fractions (FAPP, TFAPP, TWAPP, WAPP, WXAPP, XAPP and their "2"variants) now strictly obey the phase qualifier. This results in differences
relative to past versions when solid salts exist in the stream. Previously,
these solid salts were considered in the liquid phase calculations, as isdone in the stream calculations for the apparent approach. These
properties can now be calculated for all phases, including Total and Vapor;vapor returns just the true concentration since we do not allow ions in the
vapor. Total includes Vapor; when there is no vapor, it should reproduce
the values calculated for Liquid in previous versions.Parameters for vapor pressure for heating fluid DOW-Q have been
corrected in PURE25 and earlier versions of the pure component databank. In previous versions the vapor pressure was far lower than it should be.
When no molar volume VLCONS is entered for the Liquid Constant LiquidMolar Volume, it now uses the General Pure Component Liquid Molar
Volume model instead of the constant value of 1. This model is used in the
Solids Handling Property Method used for systems where the solidproperties are most important. You will see different (generally better)results when using this model and VLCONS is not entered for some liquid
components. Also, in cases where neither VLCONS nor the parameters for
the General model (usually TC, PC, and RKTZRA for the Rackett equation)are available, you will encounter errors about the missing data. Enter a
reasonable value for VLCONS or for parameters for the General model
when this happens. You can enter 1 for VLCONS to restore the resultsfrom previous versions.
In past versions, some models using the dirty-water method in sequential-
modular calculations incorrectly used the free-water phase entropy andvolume. The equation-oriented calculations used the correct dirty-watercalculation. This problem is now fixed. You may observe small differences
from previous versions in these properties in dirty-water sequential-modular calculations.
The evaluation feature of the standard Data Regression (Properties | Regression | Input | Setup sheet, option Evaluation) has been
improved for VLE with 3 or more components and for LLE. Now a flash isperformed to ensure results will be consistent with results obtained by
other methods. The results of this evaluation will be different than in pastversions for these cases, but they should be more accurate.

Steam table method STMNBS2 was modified in two ways which may leadto different results. The results of the previous version can be reproduced
by setting the value of option code 2 of STMNBS2 to 1 when it is calleddirectly, and to 0 when it is used as the free-water method in conjunctionwith an equation of state, such as SRK.
o A new option for option code 2 (value = 2) was added, which performs
the same rigorous fugacity calculations from Gibbs energy andcorrected enthalpy departure as value 1, but uses the Aspen Plus rootsearch method instead of the STMNBS2 root search method. This is
more robust and less likely to lead to flash failures where a real root
cannot be found.
o
A bug was fixed in the handling of option codes when STMNBS2 is
used as the free-water method for equations of state such as SRK.
Previously, option code 2 was ignored in this case and the originalfugacity and enthalpy calculations of STMNBS2 were always used
(equivalent to value 0).

Databanks PURE856, PURE93, PURE10, and AQU92 are no longerdelivered. These are superseded by AQUEOUS and later versions of PUREwhich include more recent data from DIPPR and other sources.
o Each of these databanks is from a version of Aspen Plus more than ten
years old. They were intended only for users who require completecompatibility with results from previous versions. Because most users
have now updated their simulations to newer database versions, these
old versions are being dropped to reduce the size of the databasedelivered with each installation.
o It is possible to use the Aspen Properties Enterprise Database to
preserve copies of these databanks if you still need to use them. Acopy of the enterprise database from an earlier version (2006 through
V7.2) which still contains these databanks is required; this can bedownloaded from AspenTech Support. See Maintaining Access to
Retired Databanks for details.
o
When you open files which reference these databanks, the UpwardCompatibility dialog box will appear. An option at the bottom of thedialog box lets you choose to either Upgrade retired databanks or
Keep retired databanks. Choosing upgrade replaces PURE856,
PURE93, and PURE10 with PURE25, and replaces AQU92 withAQUEOUS. The keep option requires a database containing the retired
databanks, and is not available when using the legacy databank
system.
The RateFrac-to-Aspen Rate-Based Distillation converter has been retired. If you are upgrading from an older version and you still have RateFrac

Features to be RetiredCompaq Visual Fortran 6.6 runtime libraries. These libraries have beendelivered for several versions while Aspen Plus has been built with Intel
Fortran in order to support user Fortran models built with the older
compiler, but this is the last version in which they will be included. Infuture versions, in order to run Fortran compiled by the Compaq compileron a computer which does not have this compiler installed, you will need
to install these libraries separately. See the documentation for thecompiler.
OLE paste links (the live, updating link to a data value in Aspen Plus
created when it is copied and pasted into an application which can support
such links, such as Microsoft Excel) will no longer be supported in the nextversion. It will still be possible to copy and paste data, but without the live
link. This mechanism has been the source of problems, including slow
copy and paste of large amounts of data. There are other techniques (OLE
automation and Aspen Simulation Workbook) to link models to Excel andother applications, and these techniques will remain available.
In the next version, it will no longer be possible to create custom formsfor custom models, nor use previously created custom forms.
In the next version, the Feedbl unit operation will be removed from theModel Library. This model was used with RT-Opt version 10.0 to create
material feed streams. It is not necessary in Aspen Plus, but was providedto maintain compatibility.
Export of the flowsheet drawing as a DXF file will be removed in the nextversion.
PFD mode (which lets you make an alternate version of the process
flowsheet to depict equipment in the plant not modeled in the simulation)will be removed in a future version.
Updates to Previous Compatibility Notes
In version V7.0, changes were made to the Analyzer block to support
CISOLID substreams. It was previously reported that this removed theDELTA_ENTH variable and added the DUTY variable. In addition to this
change, the DELTA_MVOL variable was removed. There is no exact equivalentto these removed variables in the new model, but since they were the
differences between analyzed and stream conditions, their values can be
generated by comparing the ANLZR_* and inlet stream variables.

Aspen Properties
Product DescriptionAspen Properties® is AspenTech's physical property calculation and analysis
tool. You can use Aspen Properties to prepare a complete property package torepresent an industrial process for use with Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics
(Aspen Dynamics), Aspen Custom Modeler, and Aspen HYSYS PetroleumRefining (RefSYS), and Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (HTFS+). Batch
Process Developer (Batch Plus) also uses Aspen Properties to model non-ideal
solutions for vapor emissions calculations. You can use Aspen Properties toestimate a wide range of properties from molecular structure, regress
parameters from laboratory data, and analyze the behavior of chemical andpetroleum systems.
New Features and Enhancements in V7.3This release includes the following new features and enhancements:
NIST TDE with Binary Data.
Data Regression Enhancements.
Databank Updates.
Physical Property Models.
Chemistry.
Prop-Set Properties.
Workflow and Usability.
NIST TDE with Binary DataThe NIST TDE feature has been significantly enhanced to includeexperimental data for binary mixtures. The available data include VLE,
LLE, heat of mixing, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, surface
tension, and others. These data can be used to perform data regressionusing the existing Data Regression capability. These data constitutevirtually all available experimental binary data known to date. The
retrieved data can be viewed, plotted and saved to forms for further use
in data regression.
For binary VLE data, TDE includes the capability to perform
thermodynamic consistency tests. The tests include a quantitativemeasure of the data quality (quality factor), which will be useful in helping
you select appropriate data sets to use.
This feature also includes a new workflow that allows you to perform dataregression or evaluation directly, thus enhancing ease of use.
The NIST TDE engine has been updated to version 5.0. The NIST-TRC
databank has been updated based on the June 2010 NIST data andversion 5.0 of TDE; over 4000 more compounds have been added.

Data Regression EnhancementsThe evaluation feature of the standard Data Regression (Properties | Regression | Input | Setup sheet, option Evaluation) has beenimproved for VLE with 3 or more components and for LLE. Now a flash is
performed to ensure results will be consistent with results obtained byother methods.
Experimental binary data available in TDE can be used to populate the
Data form directly (Properties | Data | Mixture | Data sheet). When
you define a Data set containing two components, you can retrieve theexperimental data from TDE instead of entering them manually.
Databank UpdatesNew APV73 database was created, containing new PURE25 databankbased on the January 2010 release of the DIPPR database. This
databank is similar to the PURE24 databank, but many parameters for a
large number of components have been updated, and 42 componentshave been added.
