Aspen Power Cats - Spring Newsletter March 20, 2013 ASPEN LIFE With the passing of daylight savings and almost 12 hours. of daylight, it definitely feels like spring is here! So it's time to de-winterize our engines, wash off the wintery mess, and get some fresh wax on our hulls. Here - we're certainly anticipating the fast approaching boating season. Last month we launched our new C100 Escape. We had the pleasure of running the boat in 40 mph wind, in 4 foot seas, with a Small Craft Advisory. No other vessel was on the water! Simply unbelievable!! Right out of the box, the boat ran perfectly. In all directions through the 4' chop, the hull ran true and soft. Not only did it not catch a drop of spray, there was no pounding in the tunnel (common for some catamarans), and it never feeling vulnerable to the elements. The new hull shape gives the C100 a much larger stature and an overwhelmingly larger presence in the water. Taking the 4' chop straight on, at 24mph, was effortless. We can't wait to see what she'll do in the Straights! In the Sales Department, we've had a huge response for the new boats. At the Seattle Boat Show, we were awarded Best Small Boat Display for 2013! Very gratifying for our team after all the hard work and effort. A special Thank You to: Nate with Gateway Yachts, CSR Marine, and the entire Aspen Team to make it all happen. Since the shows, the 36' mock-up has been reassembled at Nordic Tug and is available by appointment. Currently, we're doing customer design reviews and using the input from these initial owners to create the perfect design. The first C100, Gateway II, was delivered to Nate in Anacortes, WA. By appointment, it is available for demonstration rides. For those that have yet to experience the Aspen ride, we encourage all to do so. We are still taking orders for the 2013 production year; however, slots are limited and

Choose Your Own Adventure Aspen C100 Escape 32' By: Nathan Martin

Aspen C100 - Monumental Game Changer That's right, I said "monumental game changer!" I'm choosing those words carefully, they are not an exaggeration or just another marketing line. I'm talking about an industrychanging technology that just proved it is scalable and in fact only gets better with size. When Larry Graf and his team built the C90, many were skeptical. It's a terrific boat, butnow the Aspen team has proven they are capable of applying the concept to larger boatsand that it not only works, but is an unbelievable leap over everything else on themarket. Dave Pugh, who did the engineer work on the C100, has to be proud. He notonly had to get the shapes perfect, he had to layout the boat and distribute its weight sothat the asymmetric hulls matched their displacement against the weight they carry. Failto do that and the boat doesn't float level. Well, here's the picture of the boat floating forthe first time:

Page 3: Aspen Power Cats - Spring Newsletter March 20, 2013 · 8.5 mph - 1.5 gph, which equals nearly 6 miles to the gallon! 17 mph - 5.0 gph, almost identical to the C90 with that much weight

Looks pretty darn perfect to me. But Dave Pugh is a perfectionist, here he is measuringexactly how it sits in the water - because Dave knows exactly the displacement of thehulls he can calculate the weight of the boat by measuring the height of the boat out ofthe water. While it looks nice, knowing what went into it, I say, "WOW! Great job." Being a pilot formore than 30 years, I've seen my share of engineering projects, many simpler than this, that didn't go right. So, congratulations!

But how does it do when you put it into motion? Spectacular! Tracks even better than the C90, like it's on rails. Turns flat as a pancake, similar in motion to a BMW or a Corvette that stays level and flat in a turn; bothdirections. The first thing you'll notice about the C100 is its stature. It sits about 5 inches taller thanthe C90 and has more presence due to its size. Its lines are beautiful.

Sound: Even without the insulation added yet, the boat is far quieter in the cabin andvery comfortable in the aft cockpit, even at full throttle. Performance - The 220hp Volvo D3 is silk smooth and brings the power on withoutdelay. The motor has a very sporty but subtle rumble, love the sound. Look down at theGPS and you're doing 20 mph without even breathing hard - hey, that's near top speedof the C90 (which is already amazing). As we pushed the power all the way up, theengine rested on it's computer controlled max rpm and thus we may have slightly toolittle pitch in the propeller. Still, it was running at about 25 mph, and Larry is taking theprop in to see if we can't get even more top end out of it.

Page 6: Aspen Power Cats - Spring Newsletter March 20, 2013 · 8.5 mph - 1.5 gph, which equals nearly 6 miles to the gallon! 17 mph - 5.0 gph, almost identical to the C90 with that much weight

During the maiden voyage, we had five of us big guys on it, nearly 1,200 lbs. in all. Itabsolutely slayed the waves and wakes we encountered without so much as anoticeable wiggle - yes, better than the C90.Fuel consumption looked like this: 8.5 mph - 1.5 gph, which equals nearly 6 miles to the gallon!17 mph - 5.0 gph, almost identical to the C90 with that much weight - amazing, remember this boat is right at 35 feet in length!20 to 21 mph - 6.0 gph. This felt very comfortable and ultra smooth. At top speed for theC90 is where you'll find Nate passing almost everyone else on the water... in a fulldisplacement hull getting 3.5 miles to the gallon!! Crazy. Like I said, this is a GAMECHANGER.

Page 7: Aspen Power Cats - Spring Newsletter March 20, 2013 · 8.5 mph - 1.5 gph, which equals nearly 6 miles to the gallon! 17 mph - 5.0 gph, almost identical to the C90 with that much weight

The wake it leaves is freaky. The C90 leaves a wake like a little ski boat, but the C100leaves an even smaller and cleaner wake! Two very little rooster tails, one behind eachhull, then the water falls perfectly flat. This is the result of the extra clean way the hullknifes through the water. Larry designed in what I call a "serrated leading edge" to knockdown the spray and to replace that stainless steal spray bar on the C90... works like achamp, the water leaves the leading edge and goes straight out to the side, even goingthrough waves at top speed did not see spray from the helm position - we had to leanover the side from the aft cockpit to see it.

Advantages to other boats on the market? Unbelievable efficiency, stability, handling, and with two double hulls, six water tight compartments, and seven automatic bilgepumps, this boat is just flat out inherently safer. Honestly, I have tons of time on thewater and I simply don't see any disadvantage - I truly believe this is the boat of thefuture and the closest thing to perfection in a coastal cruiser made to date.

Yes, I'm excited. I am personally inviting everyone to come up to either Everett orAnacortes and take it for a spin. I don't care if you already own an Aspen, a Gatewayshare, or whatever. Let's go out and have some fun; you will be amazed. Oh, and I don'treally care what the weather is doing, my personal limit is 40 kts, anything above thatand my fear is that you'll have fear; the boat and I will be fine otherwise! Call and let'stake it out.

The success of the C100Escape shows that the asymmetricdesign scales up beautifully. This achievement proves that theC110 will be an amazing vessel. Thedesign is evolving dramatically basedon input from our full scale mockup. There are many details that havebeen noted and changed, IE:improved stairs, more head room inthe master stateroom (+2") addedmicrowave to galley. However, therehave also been several prettystrategic changes recommended, that

at this point, seem right. The aft cockpit in the mockup has been stretched 12" and weare looking at stretching the salon 18". The cockpit change when you get in and walkaround visualizing using it, it feels just right. Lengthening the salon allows the galley toinclude a full set of drawers to the right of the sink, 6" more length in the 1/4 berth under

and a little bigger shower in the master bath. On the starboard side it allows a host ofchanges that likely leads to a relocation of the head from the bow to mid companion way(as it was originally built) and a whole extra stateroom/convertible office/navigationstation in the starboard fwd hull. This is your chance to have input in changing the future of the boating industry. Thefinished 36' or 38' will have many unique custom features which stem from our customerfocus groups. Collaboration on this level is unique in the industry. Most manufacturesdon't listen that well. Come see it; it's your chance to have input in a brand new design.
