Aspect ratios are used in films to connote or denote different things. Though they are attributed for the overall aesthetic value (often used to achieve a

“cinematic look”, they can also contribute to the atmosphere/environment/feeling the director wants to convey with what is actually happening onscreen.

This ratio was the standard for 35mm films during the silent era.

Similar to the 4:3 Standard with a ratio of 1.375:1. This became the standard from 1932 to 1953. Today it is still used for effect. In 2009, it was used by Andrea Arnold to frame Mia in her claustrophobic environment throughout Fish Tank.

The common anamorphic widescreen format has a ratio of 2.35:1. It is the standard format in today’s cinema, because of its aesthetic appeal. Unlike the 16:9 widescreen, 2.35:1 appears more dramatic, dynamic and impressive, exposing to or immersing the viewer in a particular environment.
