Question: Does Section XI, Division 1, IWA-5214(e) apply to the disassembly and reassembly of mechanical joints in Class 2 and 3 systems only when such is performed in the course of a Section XI, Division 1, IWC-4000 and IWD-4000 repair or. IWC-7000 and IWD-7000 replacement?

Reply: Yes.

Question (1): In accordance with Section XI, Division I, may -linear flaws addressed in IWA- .3400, and linear indications detected by surface examinations required by IWB-3500, be defined in accordance with Section I l l , 1980 Edition with Addenda through Winter 1981, NX-5341 (c) and NX- 5351 (c)?

Reply (1): No, The acceptance criteria shall be as stated in IWB-3500.

Question (2): In accordance with Section XI, Division 1, are nonlinear indications detected by surface examinations specified in IWX-2500 which exceed the acceptance criteria specified h t h e Construction Code unacceptable, unless found acceptable by subsequent volumetric examinations?

Reply (2): IWX-2500 requires that components be examined and tested as specified in Table IWX-2500-1. If the indication exceeds the acceptance standards of IWB-3000, it is classified as a flaw. The flaw must be either analyzed to the requirements of IWB-3600 or repaired. For preservice examinations, analysis is not permitted.

Date Issued: June 10, 1991

File: BC85-111*

Question (1): In Section XI (1983 Edition), IWA-5214 is titled “Repairs and Replacements.” Does this paragraph apply only to activities conducted under the IWX-4000, “Repair Procedures” (except IWP), and IWX-7000, “Replacements” articles in other than Class 1 systems?

Reply (1): Yes.

Question (2): When using Section XI, (1977 Edition with Addenda through Summer 1978, and later Editions and Addenda through the 1983 Edition), is a system pressure test (IWA-5000) re- quired whenever the pressure boundary is opened and closed (e.g., replacing a valve bonnet gasket)?

Reply (2): No. A Section XI pressure test is required only when the pressure boundary is opened and closed in the course of a Section XI repair or replacement, with the exception of those items exempt under JWA-4000/7000, (see Interpretation XI-1-89-08).
