We want to offer PHSX 191 in tandem with ASTR 191 to help the programs across KU that have Physics courses, but not Astronomycourses, approved for their KU Core Goal 3 with a lab requirement. This is being done partially because we have temporarily shelved

PHSX 111 and have advised students to take ASTR 191 and the associated online lab (ASTR 196).

Justification for counting this course towards the CLAS BA

This course tasks students with making observations - using online observatory resources - and subsequently analyzingthese observations using appropriate scientific methods learned in ASTR 191 (which is a pre- or co-requisite for this course). Thestudents will critically evaluate the scientific theories purported to explain the astrophysical phenomena they will observe. A key part ofthis final process is a correct identification of the uncertainty associated with their observations (and the theory) and understanding ofhow this uncertainty impacts their conclusions (i.e., what they can conclude).

How does this course meet the CLAS BA requirements?

Lab and Field Experiences (LFE)

Will this course be required for a degree, major, minor, certificate, or concentration?

We want to offer PHSX 196 in tandem with ASTR 196 to help the programs across KU that have Physics courses, but not Astronomycourses, approved for their KU Core Goal 3 with a lab requirement. This is being done partially because we have temporarily shelved

PHSX 111 and PHSX 116 and have advised students to take ASTR 191 and the associated online lab, ASTR 196.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of General Studies in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies

American Sign Language and Deaf Studies

Do you intend to offer a track(s)?

Yes

Do you intend for this program to be offered online?

No

The School of Language, Literatures, and Cultures within the College of Liberal Arts and Science and the KU Edwards Campus proposethe development of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies. The degree is being developed for delivery on the KUEdwards campus. ASL is a visual/gestural language that has no vocal component. ASL is a complete, grammatically complex language. It differs from acommunication code designed to represent English directly, and instead it is its own independent language. As with all the language programs at KU, cultureand language are intertwined in our degree program and in our curriculum goals. This is necessary because, as with all attempts to become fully fluent in alanguage, the learner must also be fluent in understanding the characteristics of the culture of the language users. In other words, learning about the culture ofDeaf people is also learning about their language. In the United States, ASL is the language Deaf people most commonly use to communicate with each otherand with hearing people who know the language. ASL is not a universal language, however. There are signed languages in other countries (e.g., Italian SignLanguage, Chinese Sign Language, Swedish Sign Language) and we will provide exposure to these other versions of sign. American Deaf Studies centers onthe use of ASL and identification and unity with other people who are Deaf or who have the use of ASL as a language. This degree offers a comprehensiveundergraduate program in ASL and Deaf Studies in the US, as well as preparation for those interested in ASL interpreting. By housing this degree within SLLC,we take advantage of the Language and Culture expertise already established at KU while expanding into new areas of focus. Governance of the programcomes from SLLC in collaboration with KUEC. Similar to other programs housed in CLAS and delivered at KUEC, all curriculum and design decisions are made

by the home department with governance and oversight in collaboration with KUEC.

This BA degree is designed for students who have either completed an Associated of Arts degree that has a focus on American Sign Language or ASLInterpreting (such as exists at our partner institution, Johnson County Community College and other comparable accredited programs) or who have completedASL I-IV (typically four semesters of coursework). Alternatively, this degree can serve students who are sufficiently proficient and fluent in both American SignLanguage and English to pass a language proficiency entrance exam. The individuals in this latter category may themselves be Deaf or hearing, heritage ASLusers. Much as it is not uncommon for heritage English speakers to wish to pursue and undergraduate degree in English, we are excited to be able to offerDeaf students advanced academic training in their heritage language, which can provide credentialing that can significantly help in employability.

The major requires as total of 30-33 credit hours (completed through 10-13 courses at three credit hours each). Students must complete two of four academictracks (15-18 credit hours/5-6 courses each): Deaf Studies and Social Justice; Advanced ASL; Introduction to ASL/English Interpreting; or ProfessionalASL/English Interpreting. All courses are currently designed to be offered in person on the Edwards Campus or online. Campus. Students arerecommended to consult with their academic success coach advisor prior to enrolling in course work to ensure that all pre-requisites are met. Courses areeligible to count towards multiple tracks, but students will be expected to take additional electives to ensure that credit hour requirements for the major and eachtrack are met.

The four tracks within the program allow students to customize their degree in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies to focus on interpretingor non-interpreting. Students wishing to pursue non-interpreting are encouraged to complete the Deaf Studies and Social Justice and AdvancedASL tracks. These tracks will provide students with a strong understanding of the Deaf community and help to advance ASL proficiency, but will notprepare students to take credentialing exams in order to work as an interpreter. Students wishing to pursue interpreting are strongly encouraged tocomplete all four tracks to ensure a thorough understanding of the Deaf community, ASL proficiency, and prepare students to take interpretingcredentialing exams. Students wishing to pursue this track will need to enter the program with an advanced level of ASL proficiency andunderstanding of the Deaf community in order to complete the program within four years. Exceptionally well qualified students may be able tocomplete all four tracks during their Bachelors degree. Some students may need to complete 1-2 undergraduate or graduate certificates uponcompletion of their bachelors to be prepared for credentialing exams. Deaf Studies and Social JusticeOverview: This track provides an overview of Deaf Studies and social justice with the Deaf community and is recommended for all ASL and Deaf Studiesbachelors students. deaf community. Updating changes to course numbers

With the current course rotation, two Professors of Practice are able to teach all necessary courses. As enrollment grows and additionalsections are needed, we anticipate hiring additional instructors including another Professor of Practice and/or Adjunct Instructors.

Hiring for all Professors of Practice in the program will be a collaborative hiring process between the KU Edwards Campus and the SLLC Department, due totheir expertise in the area.

The School of Education has been consulted about the proposal and they are in support of the possible collaboration between the ASL degrees and their ASLI-IV courses as well as their SPED program. We believe that this program could increase enrollment in the ASL I-IV courses and could pair well with the SPEDcredential.

The Department of Classics offers 2 majors. Both provide students of diverse career goals a broad humane education and afford a solid foundation for thosewho wish to pursue graduate work in classics. The Classical Antiquity major provides inclusive, interdisciplinary training in ancient Greek and Roman culturesand prepares you for graduate study in ancient archaeology, art, or history. The Classical Languages major trains you to read the great authors of classicalantiquity (e.g., Homer, Plato, Vergil, Sappho, Saint Augustine) in the original language and prepares you for graduate study in classics and for teaching in someprivate schools. You might also combine your classical language interest with a degree in the School of Education. A degree in education with a Latin major allows you to teachLatin in public high schools.

First- and Second-Year PreparationPotential classics majors should keep in mind that proficiency in Greek or Latin is required for either major; they need to enroll in GRK 104 or LAT 104 or theirequivalents as early as possible. For students with no former training, proficiency takes 4 semesters; Classical Languages majors need additional languagecourses. Other courses to consider taking during the first or second year include CLSX 148, CLSX 151, CLSX 168, CLSX 230, CLSX 240, or the honorsversions of those courses. As soon as the student decides that classics is a possible major, he or she should talk to an undergraduate advisor in classics.

Requirements for the B.A. or B.G.S. Major: Classical AntiquityThe Classical Antiquity major consists of 30 hours of work in Classics and related courses, in addition to the coursework in Latin and/or Greek required for themajor. The major is designed to encourage interdisciplinary understanding of ancient Greek and Roman cultures while maximizing student flexibility.Of the 30 hours that constitute the major, 15 must be in the Classics Department, i.e., CLSX, GRK, and LAT courses; and 15 must be junior/senior hours, i.e., atthe 300 level or above. This major has two tracks: Classical Humanities, and Classical Art and Archaeology. Coursework in Latin and or Greek required for themajor: 4-semester proficiency in Latin or ancient Greek, or four semesters combined Greek and/or Latin, or the equivalent.
