EDITOR’S LETTERHellooo,

my lovely and most loved readers. Hope you've been wrapping up warm as the chill is definitely being felt out there these days.

The cold can be quite difficult for those who suffer from Arthritis. Apparently this non curable illness affects millions in the UK. We’ve been speaking to experts to help you manage your arthritis this winter and have a full guide on page 8 and 9 on what foods to eat, which will help relieve the pain.

We are in the last month of 2015 and in my view, December is the month to indulge. Those of you who are trying to stay fit and healthy, don’t worry I am not asking you to drop your diets or your fitness regime, but I am asking you to let your hair loose a little and just indulge in delicacies that you normal wouldn’t, after all it is the most festive month of the year and above all it’s time to wind down 2015.

So if like me you love your food, this edition’s fab canapés will surely tickle those taste buds and get you into the party season.

Speaking of celebrations, film fans have every reason to rejoice, as this month we will see Bollywood’s two biggest films release. Bajirao Mastani, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, and Dilwale, starring iconic couple Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon.

Although, I’ve always had a crush on Shahrukh, I can’t help but find Ranveer’s little choti (pony tail) adorably cute. I for one will be watching both these films, and if you want to watch them both for FREE, yes for FREE, then do enter our mega competition on page 31.

So while I keep Ranveer's thought, I am going to bid you all farewell and hope you enjoy your latest edition.

From me and the rest of the team, have a very Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays!

Yours lovingly

A look back at

Bollywood’siconic fashion trends

Whether it’s a chiffon sari, shalwar kameez, or a chania choli, our Bollywood divas have either inspired us or made us cringe with their inimitable filmi style on the silver screen. We took a look back at what we thought became the most iconic and popular fashion trend setters of their time.

Rekha in UmRao Jaan

Even today this look is considered timeless. The hugely popular mujra look from Umrao Jaan has been replicated by several heroines since it was first seen and carried by the stunning actress Rekha

Rani mUkeRJi in BUnty aUR BaBli

Rani set trends and cash registers ringing for fashion houses, as her collared short shirts, patialas teamed up with a jhola bag look in the film Bunty and Babli became an instant hit. The style went on to be called Bunty Babli suits.

Dimple kapaDia in BoBBy

The 70’s was an interesting era, and it surely belonged to Dimple Kapadia. Dimple was launched in the film Bobby and broke away from the traditional shalwar kameez and saris for a bold, saucy, and retro look. Her most memorable appearance in the polka dotted top and short and sexy skirt became a huge rage among the teenage girls of the 70s.

SRiDevi in mR.inDia

Usually just a blue chiffon sari might look boring, but on Sridevi it had a dazzling impact. She made a very sexy statement and chiffon sari’s became all the rage in the 80’s

maDhURi Dixit in hUm aapke hain koUn

It went down in the history books and although the Dhak Dhak girl Madhuri Dixit had been impressing us for some time, nothing could quite beat the popularity and traditional yet sexy beauty of her Didi tera devar diwana outfit.

The diva dazzled in a purple satin sari with a backless blouse in the song which later became a rage in wedding circles and also remains etched in our memories as a reminder of her evergreen appeal.

Urmila matondkar in rangeela

Rangeela is the film that got Urmila noticed. The very chic designs by Manish Malhotra turned many heads and not only did Urmila become hot property, but the look was demanded by many artists thereafter.

aishwarya rai – Jodha akbar

The movie Jodhaa Akbar was a cinematic marvel of opulence and grandeur with the bonus treat of Aishwarya Rai’s magnificent Mughal look in the film. The traditional Mughal look, with the rich yet perfectly placed jewels and natural yet bewitching eye makeup, really captured the attention of many fashionistas and became the hot look for brides to be the world over

kareena kapoor in Jab we met

This Kapoor can carry off almost anything, from her traditional look in refugee to her sexy avatar in Kabhie Kushi Kabhi Gham, but it was her long T-shirts with patialas look in the film Jab We Met that became a rage with the youngsters.

Our

tOp lOOk Of tOday

we are currently loving deepika’s look as mastani in, bajirao mastani, not only does she look royal, but as her role requires she totally fits the fearless and strong role of mastani. we are sure this look is going to become her most iconic yet.

Arthritis Simple ways to keep Arthritis from slowing you down this winter

In the UK, around 10 million people suffer from arthritis. The condition causes pain and inflammation in a joint and can affect people of all ages, including children

As the colder months have kicked in, many sufferers will feel their pain and inflammation increase. Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis but there are many ways to minimise its effects if you become a sufferer.

Arthritis is not a single disease but an umbrella term for a group of conditions that cause pain and inflammation in and around the joints.

The most common are pain, tenderness and stiffness around the joints, reduced movement and function, inflammation, redness and warmth and muscle weakness.

By far the most common form is osteoarthritis which is estimated to affect 8.5million people in the UK. While usually detected in those over the age of 50 it can start at a younger age following over-exertion, injury or as a result of another joint problem.

The cartilage protecting the bones around a joint becomes thin leaving the ends of the bone exposed. This makes movement painful as the bones rub together. Osteoarthritis is most often found in the joints of the hands, knees, hips and spine.

The second most common form is rheumatoid arthritis which is more severe but less prevalent, affecting around 400,000 people. It is most likely to arise between the ages of 40 and 50 and is three times more common in

women than men.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the lining of the joints causing inflammation and pain. Movement may be reduced and bones and cartilage broken down.

Other forms of arthritis include ankylosing spondylitis, gout and lupus. While there is no cure for arthritis there are various treatments that can successfully slow down its effects and minimise joint damage. Plus, there are some adjustments you can make to your diet and lifestyle to stay mobile and pain free.

Physical or occupational therapists can be very helpful in teaching you how to modify activities and accomplish daily tasks more easily. But according to research from the Medical School of Harvard here are five simple things you can do to help keep arthritis from slowing you down.

Keep moving. Avoid holding one position for too long. When working at a desk, for example, get up and stretch every 15 minutes. Do the same while sitting at home reading or watching television.

Discover your strength. Put your strongest joints and muscles to work. To protect finger and wrist joints, push open heavy doors with the side of your arm or shoulder. To reduce hip or knee stress on stairs, let the strong leg lead going up and the weaker leg lead going down.

Plan ahead. Simplify and organize your routines so you minimise movements that are difficult or painful. Keep items you need for

cooking, cleaning, or hobbies near where they are needed (even if that means multiple sets of cleaning supplies, one for your kitchen and each bathroom, for example).

Take advantage of labour-saving devices and adaptive aids. Simple gadgets and devices can make it easier to perform daily activities such as cooking, gardening, or even getting dressed. Long-handled grippers, for example, are designed to grasp and retrieve out-of-reach objects. Rubber grips can help you get a better handle on faucets, pens, toothbrushes, and silverware. Pharmacies, medical supply stores, and online vendors stock a variety of aids for people with arthritis.

Ask for help. People with arthritis often worry about the possibility of growing dependent on others. But only a very small percentage of people with arthritis become severely disabled. Still, the emotional burdens of arthritis can be considerable. Educate family members and friends about how arthritis affects you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Prevention is the key and making a few changes to your lifestyle can make all the difference.

Working with a health professional such as an osteopath, physio or chiropractor is a good idea, particularly if you have had an injury as this can

increase your likelihood of developing OA.

As well as treating the injury they will be able to advise you on beneficial exercise and stretching.

As well as keeping active, what you eat is also vital to the health of the joints.

Diet is so important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but can also be crucial in helping control or keep arthritis at bay.

First, eating healthy helps build a healthy bone structure, providing the essential nutrients for building strong bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Consuming foods that are anti-inflammatory and avoiding those that create inflammation can also contribute to healthy bones.

A healthy diet that keeps your weight in check is also important as excess weight increases the pressure on weight bearing joints, which can lead to an increase in wear and tear.

By reducing and maintaining a healthy weight, you’re reducing the likelihood of developing OA in later life or helping minimise its effects and progression if you’ve

already developed it.

Here is a list of five foods that experts say will help to combat Arthritis and are easy to incorporate into your diet.

Oily Fish

Fish such as salmon, trout, sardines and mackerel are packed full of Omega 3 fatty acids which can help to reduce inflammation.

In addition to this they are also a good source of nutrients to build a healthy strong bone structure, including vitamin D, magnesium and calcium.

Green leaFy VeGetables

Vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and kale are bursting with vitamins and minerals and are a great way to improve musculoskeletal health.

They not only contain magnesium and calcium vital for building and maintaining good bone structure but also vitamin E which helps protect the body from cytokines, which are molecules that promote inflammation in the joints.

Kale chips are very popular and are easily available from supermarkets, but the most popular and quickest way to up your intake of green leafy vegetables is in the form of a homemade smoothie or green juice.

haldi (turmeric)

Now we know why our grandparents always chose haldi over paracetamol for pain relief. Turmeric is useful in both its powder and fresh form. The importance of turmeric for health has long been known in the ancient medicines of India (Ayurvedic) and China (Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) and now more recent scientific studies have shown just how many health benefits turmeric has for the entire body.

It has been clinically proven to ease joint pain and help to increase flexibility.

A traditional favourite is adding turmeric to a warm cup of milk. Add two teaspoons so warm milk, plus a dash of honey to sweeten and drink daily to help ease those aches and pains.

bOne brOth

Some of you may turn your nose up at this, but Bone broth benefits are numerous and extensive and is now being recognised for it’s incredible health benefits

All bone broths beef, chicken, fish, lamb and more are staples in the traditional diets of every culture and the basis of all fine cuisine. That’s because bone broths are nutrient-dense, easy to digest, rich in flavor and–they boost healing.

Bone broth or stock was a way our ancestors made use of every part of an animal. Bones and marrow, skin and feet, tendons and ligaments that you can’t eat directly, can be boiled then simmered over a period of days. This simmering causes the bones and ligaments to release healing compounds like collagen, proline, glycine, and glutamine that have the power to transform your health.

Health experts say that bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, Sulphur and others. They contain chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine, the compounds sold as pricey supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

One of the most popular bone broth dishes which is enjoyed lavishly within the South Asian community and has many health benefits is Paya (trotters)

nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds contain chunks of calcium, magnesium, boron and Sulphur, which is essential for strong bones. They are also full of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids that help protect against inflammation.

Almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts and pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds are all great choices and are best eaten raw.

Try to avoid the salted, roasted varieties. Scatter over salads and curries or whizz up in a blender with fruit and veg for a nutritious smoothie.

It is important to note if you have a serious illness or are on medication, it is essential to consult with your GP first before making any big changes to your diet and lifestyle.

ShowbizMaster Of Genres Akshay Kumar Will

Keep His Fans Thrilled In 2016

Akshay posted the spoof of Deepika’s photo on Twitter, where he along with Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh were seen posing with a mannequin.

Deepika Padukone became the toast of B-Town after she tweeted her picture with Hollywood star Vin Diesel with the disclosure of the news that she is to star in the new XXX film opposite the action star. Diesel also put out a picture of the duo on his Instagram. Deepika’s Bollywood friends were obviously very excited about the news. Akshay along with Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh recreated their own version of Deepika’s moment with Vin Diesel. The stars currently shooting for Housefull 3 dubbed their version of the picture – ‘Vin Petrol’. Soon after Akshay tweeted the picture it started trending on the micro-blogging site – Riteish later shared the picture again explaining why their version was worth much more than the original, writing - “Petrol ka bhav Diesel se jyaada hai.” (The price of petrol is higher than diesel).

With

over 100 films to his credit in

Bollywood and delivering at least

three releases on an average each

year, Akshay Kumar is undoubtedly the

master juggler of Bollywood.

The last few years have seen the actor

steal the screen by giving critical

performances in thrillers like Holiday,

Special 26, and Baby to out and out

action masala movies like Rowdy

Rathore, winning hearts in family

dramas such as Waqt and Patiala

House and leaving audiences in

splits with laugh riots like Housefull

and Singh Is Kinng. It appears that

the actor will continue his master

streak and will be entertaining his

audiences with a thriller (Airlift),

comedy (Housefull 3) and a suspense

thriller (Rustom) in the year 2016.

Akshay Kumar will be welcoming his

silver jubilee in the industry in 2016

with the release of “Airlift”, an edge-

of-the-seat thriller based on a real

incident which occurred in Kuwait

in the 1990s during the time of Gulf

War. An Indian businessman, Ranjit

Katyal (played by Akshay Kumar)

helped in evacuating 1,70,000 Indians,

safely, back to their home country at

the time of crisis.

The film releases internationally on January 22, 2016.

All directors try to make their actors feel at ease during shoots, but some directors go few notches higher. One such director is, Rohit Shetty, who is well known for his action sequences. While shooting for Dilwale, Varun Dhawan got a dekho of how in to film making Rohit Shetty actually is. Varun mentioned “Rohit is an awesome

director. Rohit knows exactly what he wants. He actually does all the stunts himself before the actor goes ahead do it. I believe this gives the actor more confidence & builds the trust that everything is in good hands.”

Dilwale is a family entertainer with a perfect blend of action, romance and comedy. The cast of the film:

Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, Kriti Sanon, Varun Dhawan, Varun Sharma, Vinod Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Johnny Lever, Boman Irani and Sanjay Mishra. The film is produced by Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. in association with Rohit Shetty Productions. The film will release on 18th December, 2015.

ShowbizCelebrations broke out outside Salman’s residence

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who will co-produce Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and actress Alia Bhatt’s upcoming untitled film, says the pre-production of the highly anticipated project is going on in full steam.

While there were reports stating that the Gauri Shinde-directorial might get shelved due to creative differences between the makers, Karan has denied such rumours stating that the principal photography of the movie will commence from middle of January.

Karan, who will be co-producing the film under his Dharma Productions banner along with Hope Productions and Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment, took to Twitter to share the news with his fans.

“@gauris film with @iamsrk and @aliaa08 commences principal photography middle of January! Pre production is on full steam now! Exciting,” Karan tweeted.

While, Shah Rukh and Alia are yet to begin shooting for the film, both the actors have big films in their kitty as of now.

Shah Rukh, who has films like “Dilwale”, slated to release on December 18, “Raees” and “Fan”.

Alia, on the other hand, who was last seen on the silver screen in “Shaandaar”, will be soon feature in “Udta Punjab” and “Kapoor and Sons”.

Celebrations broke out outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence Galaxy Apartment here on Thursday evening with fans, including women, busting crackers, dancing to tunes of drums and distributing sweets.

Fans waiting outside the superstar’s residence burst into jubilant as soon as the actor returned home from the Bombay High Court, which absolved him in connection with the 2002 hit-and-run case.

One of the fans told ANI: “I am very happy with the high court’s decision and that is why I am distributing sweets among people.”

Salman was earlier sentenced by Sessions court to five years in jail in May.

The Bombay high court, however, said Salman Khan cannot be convicted in the

case, as the prosecution has not proven the charges against the actor.

Justice A.R. Joshi pointed out that Salman can’t be convicted because of “various shortcomings in investigations and prosecution’s evidence. Salman had appealed to the high court to overturn a sessions court judgment.

Justice Joshi said after seeking Salman’s presence in court at the time of pronouncing the verdict that doubt arises over involvement of appellant on charges. Investigation was conducted in faulty manner with scant regard to procedure.

Advocate Abha Singh on the other hand said exonerating Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in connection with the 2002 hit-and-run case was appalling and a sad day for the Indian criminal judiciary system.

Shahid Kapoor starts shooting ‘Rangoon’

Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra blessed with baby girl Adira

Actor Shahid Kapoor, whose “Shaandaar” turned out to be a box office debacle, has started shooting for “Rangoon” with his “Haider” director Vishal Bhardwaj.

The actor, who has been giving hints about his look in the upcoming project with different styles of beards, started shooting for the film on Thursday, said a source close to the actor. However, the filming location has not been revealed.

For the film, Shahid went all the way and opted for a beard, and

recently shared his new look with a slick moustache on Twitter.

“Rangoon” is a love story based in the 1940s, against the backdrop of World War II. It also stars Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut.

Bhardwaj has earlier delivered hit films like “Kaminey” and “Haider” with Shahid, and perhaps “Rangoon” will recreate the magic at the box office.

Meanwhile, Shahid’s last box office outing with “Shaandaar” turned out

to be a damp squib.

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji and filmmaker-producer Aditya Chopra have been blessed with a baby girl and have named her Adira.

According to their spokesperson, a healthy and fiesty daughter was born at Breach Candy Hospital on the morning of 9 December.

I would like to thank all my well wishers and fans, Rani said.

Today life has given us Gods greatest gift with Adira. We thank fans, our friends and well wishers for their unconditional support and blessings. With joy we begin this new chapter in our lives.

Selena Gomez is now team 1D, not BelieberSelena Gomez has made her choice and she chose One Direction over her former fling Justin Bieber.

The 23-year-old songstress told a fan to choose 1D’s new album, ‘Made in the A.M.,’ over Bieber’s ‘Purpose,’ reports Us magazine.

When a fan questioned Gomez, “My friend

likes jb and 1d but idk which one to get him? Purpose or Made in the AM?” on Instagram, she commented back by saying, “Made in the AM. MADE IN THE AM.”

It is being claimed that the songstress has changed her party because of her ongoing romance with Niall Horan.

Actor-singer Farhan Akhtar, who has previously sung in films like “Rock On!!”, “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Dil Dhadakne Do”, recorded a special song titled “Atrangi yaari” for his forthcoming release “Wazir”.The song in question is the crux of the film. It talks about unusual friendships, which is also the theme of the film. The promotional track, composed by Rochak Kohli and penned by Gurpreet Saini and Deepak Ramola, will feature in the end credits.

It is said to be producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s idea to have Farhan sing a song in “Wazir”, which also stars megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, Wazir is set to release on January 8 next year.

ShowbizLeona Lewis exposes Bangladesh leather industry’s animal cruelty

Naomi Campbell may

undergo hip replacementModel Naomi Campbell has reportedly been told that she may need surgery on her damaged hip.

“Naomi had to hobble in through the back door to avoid being pictured. She was openly telling other guests she may need a hip replacement. She said her injury was down to wear and tear. She even skipped the after-party because it looked like she was in a lot of pain,” an eye-witness told The Sun newspaper, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

The model has sparked concerns over her health in recent months after she was spotted using a wheelchair on various occasions and being assisted out of her friend and singer Madonna’s house following a night out last week.

“It’s become well known in the industry that she’s been suffering. There have been a lot of whispers about what’s wrong with her, given that she has even needed a wheelchair at certain points,” a source said.

However, a close friend of Campbell’s is adamant her injury has been brought on by her globe-trotting career and she’ll be back to “normal” after some much needed rest.

“It is only a light injury, aggravated by travel, work and exercise. She is all good and will be out and about as normal over the next few days,” the source added.

British singer and animal welfare campaigner Leona Lewis has in a video put spotlight on the cruel treatment meted out to cows transported from India to the Bangladesh leather industry.

As Lewis reveals in the video, made for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an estimated two million cows are transported on severely crowded trucks thousands of miles from India -- where it’s illegal to slaughter them in most states -- to Bangladesh every year, read a statement.

“Bangladesh produces cheap products that are sold around the world. Now, shocking undercover footage into the country’s billion-dollar leather industry shows who is paying the highest price for leather: animals and workers, including children,” Lewis said in the video.

According to the PETA investigation, many cows arrive with broken tails and open wounds and are so weak and malnourished that they cannot even stand. In abattoirs, or illegally on the streets, their throats are cut with a knife, and some still struggle to escape as their skin is peeled off.

Tanneries use toxic chemicals to prevent animals’ skin from decaying. Unprotected workers, including children, stand barefoot as they soak hides in carcinogenic chemicals, cut the skins with knives, and operate dangerous machinery - some losing fingers in the process.

Lewis is part of a long list of celebrities -- including Amitabh Bachchan, Jude Law, Priyanka Chopra and Pamela Anderson -- who have teamed up with PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”, to help alleviate animal suffering in various ways.

ABBAS HASANWhen Rishi signed me, he knew what he was getting into!

by Junaid Shoukat

He’s been featured in Hello Magazine, photographed at Elton John’s party with Frieda Pinto sang Happy Birthday to Karan Johar and now he released his new single ‘Sweet Girl’ we caught up with the dashing and the ever so charming - Abbas Hasan

Congratulations on the release of your new single “sweet girl” - a song in frenCh, hindu/urdu and english! how did this Come about?

Thank you. I always like to bring my various influences into my music, and having been born in Canada and grown up in Paris, France, that sometimes manifests itself in the form of language too.

reCently you signed a major deal with the Pan-asian international film and musiC awards aCademy (Paifma). how do you feel about that?

Thank you! Yes, it’s very exciting and I’m so thrilled to embark on this journey with them. I won ‘Artist of The Year’ in Canada last year, which was very special at the time, but of all the

honours I’ve held over the past few years, it

feels overwhelming and extra special to have the

academy supporting my work. I believe that music and the arts are intended to bring people together and break boundaries, and as an Asian artist this message rings true to everything that I do.

you’ve been featured in hello magazine, were PhotograPhed at elton john’s Party with freida Pinto and most reCently sang ‘haPPy birthday’ at Karan johar’s birthday Party. seems you are very busy! how did you find the exPerienCe?

Since performing at the Times of India Film Awards, and doing collaborations with Shahrukh Khan’s team and touring with Shreya Ghoshal etc, it’s been a really exciting journey. Karan’s party was held in London so it was great to see the whole gang, and the whole ‘happy birthday’ thing was just something that we planned as a surprise at the last minute.

how was the exPerienCe of worKing in bollywood?

It was surreal and very exciting. Performing in front of thirty-five thousand people including all the top

directors and my actor/singer peers from Bollywood was a very special moment. Working with Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and touring across the world--every step is more and more exciting. Signing with the Pan-Asian International Film and Music Awards is starting a whole new journey so stay tuned!

Do you write your own lyrics?

Absolutely. I can’t sing a song that I don’t connect with on some level. I like to get involved in every aspect of what I do, whether that’s writing, composing, or even planning out how I want to express the music video.

How was it like working witH actress armeena kHan on tHis latest release?

Armeena is also a fellow Canadian in the industry and we’ve been friends for a long time. We discussed doing a video for ages but one of us was always away traveling. ‘Sweet Girl’ was meant as a sequel to the ‘Away’ video starring Humaima Malick so it made sense to have a have a star like Armeena. After her blockbuster film “Bin Roye” her fans saw her as a sweet Angelic creature but I knew she would be perfect to play the Sweet Girl but also the black swan with a dark and dangerous side.

so How DiD a career in music anD acting come about? DiD you always know you’D be a future star?

I used to record with Disney Studios in Paris

as a child so I think the experience of working in a professional studio setting at such a young age taught me a lot and inspired me to pursue this life.

was tHere any objection from your parents for cHoosing tHis career patH as opposeD to a typical career sucH law or meDicine?

My parents are incredibly supportive, and of course like any parents they wanted to make sure that I got a great education at the same time. That was our deal! (he laughs). The funny part is that by the time I got my master’s degree I was already shooting ad campaigns for Virgin Atlantic and performing all over the world.

wHo is your biggest music inspiration anD wHy?

Lots of artists inspire me for different reasons. I don’t have one person. I really respect and value what classical artists brought to music but at the same time I really appreciate everyone from David Bowie and A. R. Rahman to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan!

wHere Do you see yourself in 5-10 years time?

Taking over the world! [He laughs]. For me it’s all about music, art and sharing the love. Whether I’m acting or singing, I will always be making music.

wHicH one Do you prefer, france or tHe uk?

Tough question! I love

Paris and it will always be my home and the most beautiful city for me. But now I’ve learned to love the chaos of London and in many ways this is home now.

favourite bollywooD actress?

You’re trying to get me in trouble! I’ve always had a soft spot for Priyanka Chopra ever since we met.

Do you tHink Having a frencH backgrounD Has HaD any influence in your music?

When Rishi signed me, he knew what he was getting into! [He laughs] Of course growing up in the Paris Arts scene is such a big part of my foundation so it’s inevitable that my various influences feed through to my music. Whether it’s linguistically or melodically. Even a lot of my middle-eastern references come from having grown up in Paris, where middle-eastern music is very celebrated. Ultimately everything I do has my signature but

at the same time I like to experiment with sounds and influences.

wHat is next for abbas? can we expect to see you in a bollywooD film?

You’ll have to wait and find out! [he laughs] But I can say that there will be a lot of exciting news this new year.

Dilwale?Bollywood’s most iconic couple –

Can they live up to expectations with

Rewind back 20 years when Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ), released did any of us anticipate the love and success it would go on to achieve? The romantic classic tugged at the heartstrings of cine-goers across the globe. DDLJ set trends not only at the box office in India, but also opened up the markets abroad, especially in the UK. Those who didn’t watch Bollywood films, started to watch Bollywood films and as a result not only did the film make moolah at the box office, but it also produced Bollywood’s

most loved and now known as the most iconic stars of this generation - Shahrukh Khan and Kajol.

In a recent interview for Asian Style Magazine, we got to learn and feel first hand why this jodi have become so popular and remain everyone’s favourite on-screen couple. The lively banter and humour between Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan is not only heart-warming, but infectious. Their chemistry is visible not just on-screen but off screen as well.

It’s no wonder they have six blockbuster films behind them and

whether it was Raj and Simran or Anjali and Rahul they made millions fall in love with them and gave a new meaning to romance in each film.

Their first film together was in 1993, called Baazigar in which Shahrukh played an unconventional character with negative undertones. Although he romanced both Shilpa Shetty and Kajol in the film, it was the smash hit song ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen’ that got everyone not only dancing to their tunes but let everyone know that the hit Jodi of Kajol and

Shahrukh and Kajol in their next release 'Dilwale'

Page 22: Asian Style Magazine issue 11

22 ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINEIssue 11

Shahrukh had arrived.

The couple then returned in Karan Arjun and despite it being a two hero film, the Kajol- Shahrukh jodi still left an impression with their song ‘Jaati Hoon Mein’. Although the film did well and their song was appreciated, it wasn’t until DDLJ arrived that same year that people really started taking notice of the Baadshah and Kajol as they achieved their hat trick of hit films

DDLJ marked 20 years of its release on October 19, 2015 and to celebrate the grand feat, filmmaker Rohit Shetty, along with SRK’s production house Red Chillies, produced a video that shows Shahrukh and Kajol reminiscing about, what is believed to be the biggest movie of their respective careers.

The video was watched by over 4 million viewers on YouTube and took every

fan through a nostalgia of emotions helping us re-live and enter the world of Raj and Simran’s innocent love once again.

It’s fair to say that DDLJ is classified as a cult classic and it’s all down to the amazing director of the film, Aditya Chopra, who had the vision, which was brilliantly brought to life by Shahrukh and Kajol. The chemistry was so strong of the 50 year old superstar and the forty one year old actress that even two decades on people are still repeating their famous dialogues, such as “Bade bade deshon mein aisi choti choti baatein, hoti rehti hai…Senoirita” (In big big countries such small small things ... keep happening) “Agar yeh tujhe pyar karti hai toh yeh palat ke dekhegi ... palat ... palat!” (If she loves you then she will turn around and see you ... turn ... turn!)

The duo were next seen on celluloid three years later with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and once again stole people’s hearts as Rahul and Anjali.

The film was extremely successful in India and abroad, becoming the highest grossing Indian film of the year, third highest grossing Indian film ever behind Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and the first

Bollywood film to enter the UK cinema top ten.

This was followed up with another blockbuster in 2001 with Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham, now playing a married couple in the film, rather than young star crossed lovers, Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham further cemented the Shahrukh and Kajol combo at the box office as it broke the record of Kuch kuch hota hai and became the highest grossing Indian film outside India at the time.

Undoubtedly unbroken and now superstars in their own right, their next film, My Name is Khan although went on to become a huge hit at the box office met with mixed responses from critics. Following a gap of nine years from their last film together, My Name is Khan perhaps was something very different to the usual romantic genre Kajol and Shahrukh had been playing in the past which fans had been accustomed to seeing.

The storyline of the film was very different and you could clearly see that both superstars had matured immensely as actors. ‘My Name Is Khan’ describes the journey of one family and how it changes because of 9/11.

The film begins with

the child, Rizwan Khan (Tanay Chheda), a Muslim who has Asperger syndrome, growing up with his mother (Zarina Wahab) in the Borivali section of Mumbai. Later as an adult (Shahrukh Khan), Rizwan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother and sister-in-law. While there, he falls in love with Mandira (Kajol).

After 9/11, Rizwan and Mandira begin to face a number of difficulties which causes them to separate. Rizwan then begins a long journey across the United States to win Mandira back. In the process of his journey, he “inspires optimism and joy in the hearts of the people he encounters by spreading of messages of goodwill wherever he roams.”

Although the movie earned flak from some quarters citing anti-national elements, it found a fan in the legendary writer and author Paulo Coelho. Mr Coelho took to Twitter to praise the movie and even called it the “best film that he has watched this year”.

Kajol and Shahrukh once again proved that their chemistry was beyond the candy floss romance and gloss that you usually see in Bollywood films (with a few exceptions) and once again claimed their

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Baazigar

position as the numero uno couple in Hindi cinema today.

Today the talented couple are getting set to reprise their iconic on-screen pairing in their next film Dilwale, which is set to release worldwide 18 December, twenty-two years after their first film and hit film Baazigar.

The film is Directed by Rohit Shetty, who worked with Shahrukh previously in the hit film Chennai Express and has also Directed the smash hit trilogy Golmaal.

Joining Shahrukh and Kajol in the film are Varun Dhawan, who has five hit films to his credit and Kriti Sanon who is one blockbuster film old.

With such a successful cast and production team coupled with the non-stop film promotions both in India and abroad there is no doubt that Dilwale is sure to get a huge opening.

The trailer of the film

when released a month ago, garnered over 5 million hits within the first 24 hours.

This made it evident that fans had been looking forward for the super hit jodi of Shahrukh and Kajol to return on the silver screen.

As well as compliments on social media and through several media outlets, there was also some criticism. When the song from the film, Gerua was released, it was slammed from several quarters for having included so many Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) which many found cringe-worthy. News was doing the rounds that the song featuring Bollywood’s favourite jodi Shah Rukh

Khan and Kajol did not meet up to people’s expectations, considering this song was hyped to bring back the chemistry of the star duo from Suraj Hua Madham. However, when this was followed up with a video showcasing the making of Gerua released by Red Chillies Entertainment which revealed that none of it was CGI the criticism quickly turned back to compliments.

The video also shows how Kajol saved Shah Rukh from falling off the valley during their dance sequence.

The trailer, hit the right notes with fans as it showcased a perfect mix of thrill on wheels and an eternal love story.

Although the story line hasn’t been made clear we do know that apart from playing Kajol’s romantic hero, Shah Rukh is also playing an elder brother to Varun Dhawan in the film. It is believed Varun, as the younger brother, is totally devoted to his bhai, in the film so much so that he is not even afraid to lose his ladylove (Kriti Sanon) for him. It’s a film where ‘love conquers all’ according to Kajol.

Loaded with adrenaline pumping car scenes and two hot romantic couples, will the film hit the bullseye? Can Shahrukh and Kajol recreate their magic. Watch the film on 18 December and be sure to tell us what you thought.

Avoid these cold-weather missteps.

Deadly Beauty Mistakes Not To Make This

Winter

LINGERING IN A HOT SHOWER

When it’s ten below outside, it’s tempting to turn your morning shower into a half-hour steam-a-thon. But after about 15 minutes, all that heat begins to compromise your skin’s lipid layer, a complex of fatty acids that holds in precious moisture. Turn down the heat as much as you can—or at least shorten your shower time.

THE WRONG CLEANSER

If you thought the lipid barrier in your hot shower was bad, well drying soap lather is even worse. Try to avoid soap-based facial cleansers. Cold weather normally reduces the moisture levels in the air, therefore it’s our suggestion for almost everyone to go for a non-foaming cleanser. There are quiete a few decent products on the market now.

Personally I recommend Pond’s cold cream cleaners for dry skin and for oily and acne prone skin I would recommend Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

7

Page 25: Asian Style Magazine issue 11

25ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINEIssue 11

APPLYING FOUNDATION TO FLAKY SKIN

No foundation, no matter how great the formula, looks good on dry skin—in fact, it will just highlight trouble. To keep the skin smooth, exfoliate regularly with a scrub containing gentle beads, and switch to (or add) a rich night cream. Then choose a moisturising foundation with a dewy or satin (rather than matte) finish—avoid anything powdery.

THE WRONG LIP BALM

It’s no secret that your lips get more chapped in the winter, but not all balms are created equal: The most important thing is to use one that is viscous, not waxy, so the ingredients penetrate fissures. Stay away from anything with lanolin (especially if you have eczema or supersensitive skin), and, since fragrance is the number-one skin allergen, avoid anything that’s heavily scented or tastes like your favourite sweets.

DON’T DROP THE SPF

The sun’s rays still exist in winter and therefore your skin will still absorb them and be slowly damaged over time say skin experts. Even if you’re only outside for a total of 30 minutes, five times per week such as walking to work or taking a lunch break, over a year, that adds up to 7,800 minutes in the sun. To make sun protection easy, choose a daytime moisturiser with broad-spectrum

protection (UVA and UVB) and at least SPF 30. This applies to ladies of South Asian origin too. It’s true that Asian skin has a natural sun protection factor of four. It also burns less easily and is less prone to sun damage, premature aging and wrinkling than Caucasian skin. Still, Asian skin can be sensitive and easily damaged. It tans easily and is prone to pigmentation problems that can be caused by UV exposure. So take our advice and don’t drop the SPF

NEGLECTING YOUR HANDS

One more reason to wear gloves: Forgetting to do so can lead to painfully cracked fingertips and peeling nails say dermatologists. Many antibacterial hand soaps can be drying, so we would advise using a mild, creamy one instead. Then rinse well with lukewarm water, and reapply hand cream every time. Once a week, rub cuticle oil into and around nails to keep them hydrated.

ROUGH FEET

Sandpaper feet don’t appeal to anyone, not to mention that neglecting your feet all winter just makes it more difficult to whip them into shape for spring. As maintenance, get a pedicure at least every six weeks, or even better, follow this foot-softening routine once a week: Soak

your feet in warm, soapy water for 15 minutes, then buff the soles with a foot file. To soften and help seal cracks, slick on an ointment, then wear cotton socks while you sleep.

Clutch my bones

From everywhere

I feel the fear

I feel the pain

The way they see me

With disdain.

We crossed the sea

We trudged the land

And as I wailed

You held my hand.

We left behind

Those times of joy

The cake in the fridge

My little toy.

I don’t know yet

The British public has been in turmoil since British parliament voted for airstrikes in Syria. Whilst it seems the majority of the British public was against, the decision of the majority of British MP's was for and there is the likelihood of so many poor Syrian families to be displaced and in need of refuge.

This edition to reflect the mood and thoughts of many, we are sharing this fantastic poem by Nikita Madhani where she describes what it is like to see things from the eyes of a Syrian child.

What caused the wound,

You screamed with ache

And Daddy fumed.

What suffering, What pain

What bloodshed means,

Some broken souls

Some shattered dreams.

I hope we go back

Home someday

But you tell me

“It won’t let us stay.”

Out in the darkness

As I stare

Mom clutch my bones

Just everywhere.

Syria is one of the most dangerous places for a child
