MSc (BDT) Program ObjectiveThis unique program is jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Mathematics. The program integrates a variety of disciplines to allow students to learn all the important facets of big data and how it is used in the real world.

Students will learn the major components of big data, including infrastructure, data integration, storage, modeling and management, computing systems, analytic and mining systems, security, policy and social implications, as well as human factors and big data applications in various �elds (data science).

CurriculumStudents are required to complete 30 credits of coursework, including 12 credits of core courses and 18 credits of elective courses. Students may take a maximum of 6 credits of courses from the Master of Science in Information Technology, subject to approval.

MSc (IT) Program ObjectiveThe program is designed for those who wish to obtain broad-based and leading-edge skills in Information Technology and provides students with a strong theoretical foundation in all areas of IT.

The courses give students insight into the application areas of all the subject materials that they study. The dual emphasis on a strong theoretical foundation and practical application, combined with extensive skill-set training, gives our students a broad array of expertise to draw on, enabling them to meet both the present and future needs of the IT industry.

CurriculumStudents are required to complete 30 credits of IT courses. An Independent Project can also be undertaken for a maximum of 6 credits.

My study experience in MSc(BDT) program is pretty good. The course

arrangement is comprehensive, the professors are knowledgeable and the studying topics related to computer

science are exciting. During my stay at HKUST, I learnt about how to extract and process raw data, build practical models and derive

solutions for real-life problems. The various elective courses and topics provided by this program gave us chances to study and develop our own specialties according to our individual interest, abilities and career goals. Besides theoretical knowledge, the department emphasizes on practical skills and students can learn to apply knowledge learnt from class. Having been working on all the projects, I obtained hands-on experience on real-world data science problems and learnt to

It was very intense year. The program covers topic on quantitative statistics,

distributive systems and business. I had an opportunity to design my own study path by selecting the

courses I’d like to study. I was mainly focus on topic in arti�cial intelligence and �nancial quantitative analysis. Although the

program is young it is very student-oriented and designed consider student’s feedback. The collaboration with industrial partners helps to teach state-of-art techniques. Also you can work on your course

project with some of the big it and research companies.

I strongly recommend BDT to anyone who is interested in computer science and arti�cial intelligence in general. The knowledge and

experience is relevant for industrial needs, and can become a starting point for a research career as well.

My overall experience of MSc BDT program at HKUST has been

excellent from the very beginning. While this is the �rst cohort of the program, the courses offered by

the world-class professors are well designed, which address both the theoretical and practical perspectives of

topics related to big data technologies…
