Mingwei XuINTRODUCTION of workshop on Fundamental Issues of

Future Internet• Objective of Architecture & Building Blocks WG • Internet has achieved a great success• However, there’re new challenges• Why so many challenges• So Internet really needs a substantial change• Two categories of designing Future Internet• Design Goals• New Goals in Addition• Design Principles

Lixia ZhangLooking Back, Looking Forward:A few observations about the Internet (r)evolution:• Setting the Stage• Internet as an Engineering Design• Design as Revision• Design as Revision: An Example• Design as Revision: A 2nd Example• Design as Revision: A 3rd Example• Network Research as Scientific Investigation• To find out how to design the future Internet• Looking back: First 2 Observations• Looking back: A 3rd Observation• A few other observations

Lixia Zhang

• A few other observations• Yet another observation• Internet as an Engineering Design• Circumstances Change Over Time• Today’s Internet faces a # of challenges• How did these problems creep in?• "Being the Right Size" by Haldane, 1928• Two quick summary notes

WakikawaMobility• Mobile and Wireless (Wireless is independent

from Mobility)• Different mobility for different scenarios:• Network-based mobility (PMIP, 3GPP)• Host-based mobility (MIP/NEMO, WiMAX)• Local mobility (MANET)• Wireless Stub Networks• Need for E2E

Kilnam Chon Wrap-up Session Summary of Discussion:• Mobility maybe is a feature of Asian pacific region in term of #

of users and demands of new functionality.Security and scalability are abstract concept.

• How can we scale mobile service with security? We need a position paper.

• When shall we write this?Try to finish the end of year.

Winter school is good time to review it.• What kind of structure are you looking for?

What kind of content? How many pages? -> About 10

Page 14: Asia FI Workshop on Fundamental Issues of Future Internet Http:// rkshop/main.htm Date: October 26, 2008 Venue: HuangHai

Kilnam Chon• What position are we going to make?

It's guideline.• Are there any benchmark and reference?

In GENI research plan, 30-40 pages. First part is an overview; latter part is details of plan.

• Who will write this document?Limited the number of editors.D Lee, Jun Bi, Ryuji Wakikawa. Jun Bi will be the chief editor.

It will not be position paper, but more like Guideline. It can be fairly loose format. It should be easier to be accepted by community.

• Do we need to discuss scalability, security in content of mobility?

Kilnam Chon• Overview

each technology (mobility, security, etc)• Bias to mobility

We want to facilitate the technology, previous architecture how to handle this.Even though comprehensive thing at this time, network aspect, protocol aspect, application aspect, security aspect of mobility.

If it is too bias to mobility, we can revise it at the next time.• Another workshop. At winter school, we will have review of guideline.

Next editorial meeting will be at Beijing. Another workshop. Same topic one year later.
