While the Ventilation Rate Procedure provides only a dilution solution for the control of typical offending contaminants for a specified occu- pancy, the IAQ Procedure provides a directed approach by reducing and controlling the concentrations of selected air contaminants of concern through both dilution and en- hanced air cleaning. Rather than relying only on diluting the concentration of contaminants with outdoor air, designing with enhanced filtration of both recirculated and ventilation outdoor air can im- prove IAQ and result in the protection of the occupied space. PROGRAM: IAQ and Cognitive Functioning in High Performing Buildings

Achieving balance among desired goals for indoor air quality (IAQ), energy consumption, and occupant comfort within the built environment is challenging. The American Society ofHeating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) endeavors to achieve thisthrough guidelines and standards focused on advancing building science as it relates toenvironmental quality. This presentation will review the commonly used design guidesfound in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1, “Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality.”

The current form of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1 employs two mechanical ventilation pro-cedures to provide acceptable IAQ in buildings: The Ventilation Rate Procedure and the In-door Air Quality (IAQ) Procedure. While the Ventilation Rate Procedure provides only adilution solution for the control of typical offending contaminants for a specified occu-pancy, the IAQ Procedure provides a directed approach by reducing and controlling theconcentrations of selected air contaminants of concern through both dilution and en-hanced air cleaning.

Rather than relying only on diluting the concentration of contaminants with outdoor air, designing with enhanced filtration of both recirculated and ventilation outdoor air can im-prove IAQ and result in the protection of the occupied space. This presentation will focuson the application of enhanced particle, gas-phase and biological filtration for compliancewith Standard 62.1. An outline of the design aspects to consider will be reviewed, with thefocus on achieving acceptable levels of contaminants of concern within the occupied spacewhile considering the desire to meet high-performance building standards and improvedcognitive functioning.

Greetings Everyone,

It is now September, which meansthe nights get colder, the leavesbegin to change, and best of all, another ASHRAE season is upon us!

This year I attended my first CRC.Although it was virtual due to thecurrent circumstances, it was anamazing experience. Many greatdiscussion topics were circulated atthis workshop. A question that wasbrought up, which I challenge you toask yourself is, “What opportunitiesand learning experiences would Ihave missed out on if it weren’t forASHRAE?” Even if you don’t have aconcrete response right now, youhopefully will be more equipped toanswer this question in 8 months.

With the expectation that this

upcoming year being different thanany year before, please understandhow much we appreciate yourcontinued support throughout thesetimes. We are excited with the virtualmeetings we have planned, and justlike our in-person meetings in thepast, we are confident we will be ableto provide you with interesting andrelevant information.
