National level. It just takes getting involved. Other volunteer

opportunities that our Chapter has lined up this year so far include participation in our

Chillin’ with Mark

Yes. I’m aware that is a horrible play on words to reference an update from our Refrigeration Chair. All clever ideas or suggestions for something more creative or even slightly funny can be submitted to me by email or phone. melanie by mark o’donnell I spoke with a representative from Dupont, Bill Fig, regarding the phase-out of HCFC’s. Bill said the original phase out schedule was in place but subject to change. Please find the phase-out schedule from the original Montreal Protocol. Blast from the Past… This year we plan to feature a past president in each newsletter. Nancy Mills is our focus for November. Nancy is currently our CTTC chair for the seventh time! Nancy graduated from WSU in 1994 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Q: What is your advice to the young professionals who entered the industry in recent years?

A: Get involved and stay involved with your local engineering community. our HVAC community.

2.

President 2006-2007

Q: How did being the Chapter President impact your professional life?

A: I’m not sure that it had a direct impact on my professional life. However, in general, being a member of ASHRAE has allowed me to develop both personal and professional relationships that I would not have otherwise.

Q: What did you remember the most from your experience being the Chapter President?

A: I can barely remember what I did last week!

WSU Engineering Open House. We desperately need some

contractor members to step up and volunteer for help with the two sustainability

projects, both which will need to be constructed in Spring of 2013. For Science Olympiad we will be helping with two events at the State tournament held on the first Saturday in April (National Volunteer’s Month!) at WSU. The events are Thermodynamics & Mag-Lev. We need an Event Supervisor for Thermodynamics and volunteers for both. Project Lead the Way is a pre-engineering curriculum at the Derby Public Schools and they need local engineering mentors to help the students. Block Kids usually takes place in February and is sponsored by NAWIC. ASHRAE typically provides judges to the event which has students build an array of structures out of legos.

Also, during February and National Engineers week there are many opportunities to have local students interested in engineering to shadow you for half a day or so. We will also need members to volunteer as judges for the WSU Engineering Open House where the Senior Design projects will be on display. Needless to say, opportunities for volunteering abound in our area and for our membership. Get involved in one or more of these causes and represent ASHRAE and our profession for the good of others. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have interest in volunteering for any of these.

What is YEA?

To ensure the future of the Society and the industry, ASHRAE is committed to advancing its programs and services for young members through helping them build their professional foundations. With this in mind, ASHRAE created a committee called Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA), for members age 35 and younger!

What can YEA do for me?

We’re glad you asked! To help you develop your skills, grow as a professional and expand your network, the YEA Institute was created to offer a variety of YEA- focused education and networking programs tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re learning at a confer- ence, attending a leadership weekend or receiving one- on-one advice from a fellow ASHRAE member, the YEA Institute is the perfect opportunity for you to make the most of your time with YEA.

November Meeting

The November meeting was highlighted with a lunch meeting, late afternoon, tour and social at the Anchor. Sadly enough, Salaman did not send me photos from the Anchor. Some of you may be breathing a sigh of relief. Hopefully everyone behaved themselves. During the luncheon Greg Quigley of Basis Engineering and Randy Crook of Architectural Innovations presented on the challenges faced by them and the solutions they utilized in order to preserve the beauty of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, while updating it at the same time. MKEC also discussed the 3D scan model performed on the building prior to design.
