PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It is my honor to be elected as the President of ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter
in 2020-21. It is also a tough year that we all need to face. The COVID-19
pandemic has been widely spreading all over the world. The business behavior
is changing in a way that we are not easy to see each other in person. The global
economy is in a nosedive. Everyone is waiting for the vaccine to be developed.
In the first half of my presidential year, we still held several seminars and BoG
meetings. Some of those gatherings went on-line. Definitely, we could not
arrange any site visits and workshops. But we tried our best to keep in contact
with all members and committee representatives, update the latest information
and technology to the industry. During this difficult situation, I have to say thank
you to all of my committee members for their altruistic supports and efforts.
The theme of this year is “The ASHRAE Digital Lighthouse & Industry 4.0”.
We are encouraged to focus on the digital evolution of the engineering and
construction ecosystem. Our society president described the engineering and
construction is like farming. It is because farming is a process of plowing,
planting, maintaining, and harvesting. In our engineering and construction
ecosystem, we also need to acquire the correct team (plow), find the right path
(plant), drive our value in continuous improvement (maintain) and build up
solution to exceed expectations (harvest). Throughout this process, we can
identify ourselves as the innovators, differentiate ourselves from the
competition and improve our profit. And go digitization can enlarge our harvest
as well.
Digitization is a new trend, and it will be running popularly in this challenging
moment. We need to work together and get through this hard year.
Hope all of you can stay healthy!
Tenny Tam
President (2020-21)

JOINT STUDENT BRANCHES
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2020
Under the impact of Covid-19, joint student
branches annual general meeting (SB AGM)
was first time conducted through the internet.
Still luckily, while the pandemic was relatively
stable, limited HKC officers, SB Presidents
and advisors gathered for the meeting with
society distance. For the other student
committees and immediate past presidents,
they joined through the internet.
In this AGM, we did the similar rundown with
last year. However, the largest challenge had
happened on the broadcast control technology.
We hoped that even the SB committees cannot
reach venue, they still can introduce
themselves one by one. It may be caused
inconvenient but it was really valuable for all
of them. All immediate past presidents (IPP)
presented their own student branch annual
report of last year and the new president
proposed the upcoming year plan. The SB cert
and flag also transferred from IPP to the
current president.
After the handover ceremony, Justin from
HKU presented the design project which won
the 3rd place of HVAC design calculation and
2nd place of HVAC system selection in a
series of ASHRAE global competition. He
shared the skills and experience to encourage
students to join in next year too. I also want to
take this opportunity to thanks for our HKC
president – Mr. Tenny Lam and Heidi from
YEA provided speech and sharing in this
meaning event.

HONG KONG JOINT SYMPOSIUM 2019/20
The Joint Symposium 2019/20 jointly
organized by The Chartered Institution
of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)
Hong Kong Region, The Hong Kong
Institution of Engineers – Building
Services Division, ASHRAE Hong
Kong Chapter and the Department of
Building Services Engineering of the
Hong Kong Polytechnic University was
successfully held on 28th October 2020
in webinar basis. The main theme is
“Innovation for Smart Performance
Buildings in Hong Kong & Great Bay
Area”. This was a remarkable year as the joint symposium had been hindered by the social event in
2019 and pandemic issue in 2020, leading to the first year of bringing a webinar platform to gather
internal and local speakers to foster the advances in building design and building services
engineering. After the Welcome Address delivered by the Chairman, Mr Walter Au, the guest of
honour, Ir. S.H. Lam, JP, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of the HKSAR
Government, officiated the Opening Address to the participants. Different topics of session themes
had been delivered, including sustainable building designs, innovative approaches for building
services installations, advanced monitoring based commissioning and Internet of Things (IoT).

VIRTUAL DIALOGUE WITH SOCIETY PRESIDENT
A virtual dialogue with the new Society President, Mr. Charles Gulledge III was held on 7 October
2020. It was also in discussion with the Region XIII DRC Mr. Apichit Lumlertpongpana, Chapter
Presidents from Macau and Taiwan, and all of our officers.
We understood that our Society President was born in a farm. And he described that the engineering
and construction is like farming. It is because farming is a process of plowing, planting, maintaining,
and harvesting. In our engineering and construction ecosystem, we also need to acquire the correct
team (plow), find the right path (plant), drive our value in continuous improvement (maintain) and
build up solution to exceed expectations (harvest). Throughout this process, we can identify
ourselves as the innovators, differentiate ourselves from the competition and improve our profit.
The theme in this year is “The ASHRAE Digital Lighthouse & Industry 4.0”. It encourages us to
focus on the digital evolution of the engineering and construction ecosystem. It is true, especially
under this pandemic situation as we are all suggested to stay home and use technology to
communicate and work for business.
Hope all of you can get through this difficult situation quickly!

goals including “Good Health and
Well-Being”, “Industry, Innovation
and Infrastructure”, “Sustainable
Cities and Communities” and
“Climate Action”.
.

TWG- REFRIGERANT UPDATE
In 2020, HCFC refrigerants such as R-22 have been phased
out in new equipment importing to Hong Kong. Some of the
alternatives like R-401A are also scheduled to phase down
under the Kigali Amendment to Montreal Protocol due to high
global warming potential (GWP). ASHRAE Hong Kong
Chapter has launched a new technical working group (TWG-
Refrigerants) in August 2020 to observe/study the emerging
refrigerants to replace those with high GWP in use, and to
research the best practice or guidelines from ASHRAE (e.g.
Standard 15,34) to accomplish safe application in HVAC&R
industry since some of these emerging refrigerants are
flammable such as R-32, R-290, R-1234yf, R-1234ze(E), R-
452B and R-454B while others are of high pressure like CO2.
TWG-Refrigerants consists of ASHRAE members with
relevant experience in refrigerant bearing products/systems for
HVAC&R applications. They are working in their own
personal capacity as volunteers to accomplish specific
objectives and tasks endorsed by the Board of Governors,
ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter. Current membership included
Dr. Philip Yu (Chair), Prof. W K Chow, Mr. Joe Chow, Miss
Jessie Hu and Mr. Tenny Tam.
